Long distance does not mean a sure catch when doing surf casting.
You need to observe the water before you cast, for example, on sandy beach, during low tide you can see white splash on the surface of the water, which shows that place is shallow. on the opposite, if the water color is clam and dark (not like teh tarik but like dark blue), there is a drop off - or you can call it a valley. this is where you should aim - because when tide push the fish near the shore, this is where most of the fish will hide themselves. if small fish hiding in this spot the big fish will come hunt them down. normally it is either one hour before highest tide or one hour after the highest tide - my experience.
Don’t be too concern about your distance now, in actual beach fishing condition, with the wind and bait…putting your bait around 70m to 80m is good enough already!
As for the reels, any long cast spool will do the job for fishing.
Once you get the hang of it, then you may want to review your tackles…maybe look for specialised ones. Maybe you want to even indulge into using multipliers.
Hopefully later you may want to cast as far as leadhunter…200m plus on the field which also requires a different set of specialised tackles.
Surf fishing and tournament casting…really fun! okay, okay …enough poison already, he he.

bro Pocket,
Your statment here is confusing. The fundamental of surfcasting is distance, where an angler must be able to place the bait furthest possible and to achieve this he or she must know how the proper casting technic. As we all know that beaches in Malaysia come in various form, some are flat, some have medium gradiant and some having steep slope. Some beaches having near drop off and some having 100 mtrs + from the waterline. Agreed that distance doesn’t gurantee you a sure catch, to me 50% is the know how and 50% is LUCK.
