surf fishing set up

Dear all,

im new to surf fishing, wish someone can help solve my queries

1.) how long does the shockleader need for surf fishing? i use ard 30 feets for popping.

2.) what knot to use? will it hurt the guide or reduce the distance? i use FG knot for braid to mono. how about mono to mono line?

3.) the shockleader weight? my main line is 20lbs mono

thanks for helping

Hi hulian,

I hope this will help answer your queries: -

Q 1 - As a general rule, the length of the shockleader should be at least 7 to 8 rounds in the spool with the rest of the line going through the length of the rod and of course out to your sinker.

Q2 - For surfcasting, highly advisable to use mono lines. Mono to mono lines are joined by using simple overhand knot for shockleader with the main line going through the knot and tieing a uniknot over the shockleader (5 out and 5 in the loop). Quite confusing to describe but actually very easy to do and gives you the smallest knot for the link compared to other knots adn doesn’t impact the guides and distance.

Q3 - For power casting, as a general rule between 0.6mm to 0.7mm…very safe against carck-off.

Hello geng!!

How long the rod is to cast the Rapala Shad Rap 6gm at the best distance?? is that 6 feet or 7feet?

Curiosity killed the fish…sunoh..eh tenggiri la pulak

Hi manumomar,

The issue is not really the length but the casting weight of the rod. A 6gm lure would need a light weight rod to optimise distance and control.

I reckon a bait casting sifu would be able to advise you better as this is a surfcasting section lah.

what’s the general rule of thumb for shock leaders? about 2-3 times main lines’ strength?

Hi,
It’s actually the weight we use that determines the size of our shock leader. General rule of thumb is 1oz=10lb. We in the surfcasting fraternity normally use 50lb(0.70mm) for distance casting. When fishing we don’t normally powercast/pendulum(safety reasons) so maybe you can use a slimmer diameter but whatever it is safety is our no.1 concern.

Hmmm…takut kena the pakcik in the sampan punya kepala, is it?[;)] Have to remember that. otherwise, one day, I’ll find my baits going one way and my sinker + line going another. has happened before, will happen again when mr murphy is around.[:D][:D]

I think you should invest for a 13 or 14 footer rather than a 10 footer.

Cheers.
