FT,
Although i’ve not posted for a while, i thought i might as well give my views on this topic. Depending on what type of fishing you do (freshwater or saltwater lure fishing), being a (mostly land-based, sometimes from a boat) freshwater fishermen myself, i’d put this according to the following order.

No. 1: Daiwa TD-Z (excellent all rounder)
No. 2: Daiwa Alphas 103 (purple color models) (excellent value for money)
No. 3: Shimano Calcutta (all models, i just love them)
No. 4: Shimano Antares AR (or Calais 100) (they don’t make them any smoother)
No. 5: Daiwa Liberto Pixy (excellent for short distance light pitching)

i used to be a round profile reel fishermen a long time ago before i made the switch to low profiles and never look back. for heavy lure casting requiring high line capacity, nothing beats a round profile. for everything else, low profiles are more than capable.

personally, i think that daiwa used to make better low profile reels and shimano the other way round. Daiwa’s breaking systems hold the upper hand though. but lately, daiwa’s baitcasters have been somewhat of a disappointment. for now, Shimano’s are the way to go!

thanks for the input.

i somehow don’t really like the handle backplay of shimano BCs, no matter how high-end the reels are, there’s that little backplay which is quite irritating. other than that, the shimano’s are great reels.

unless if you strongly favor baitcasting reels the likes of the Daiwa Steez, Ito monoblock, Daiwa/Megabass exclusive models, most Daiwa models have slight back play too. The Zillion is a good example. even the alphas have slight back play. from personal experience using mostly daiwa’s and shimano’s, i find that shimano reels have the edge in terms of performance to reliably ratio. Daiwa’s on the other hand, though they are mechanically more simple and more refined, but don’t seem to score high on reliably.

I add Ryobi T1 inside. Not sure how many of you guys have used this classic roadster.

geez…many thanls ya…

don’t know which is which but if i’m trying to use very small 3g to medium 12g lures..

which MORRUMS is advisable???
this one perhaps…sold by the look also..

Morrum ZX1600/1601BJ…IVCB-4

bro FT…how much ‘they’ are worth..
benn heard that somebody can get it easily
down in s’pore
unfortunately…not a new but used one..

anybody can help???

Here’s mine,
While each reel performs on different situation, let me rank mine in their best element.

  1. ryobi castpro(flip version) (Nothing special about the reel, cant cast light lures, cant cast far, broke down after a year but imagine a bc reel that cant birdnest even when kancheong level is 10) Top sebarau reel!!
  2. conquest 50/51
    3.Morrom s2
    4.2500c
    5.calcuta 50/51

http://Torkingdom.wordpress.com

I can only name one reel, that is the Shimano Calais 201-5. I can not name as many as five. Not that I dont have 5 bc reels.

So, my tops 5 bc reels no matter how goes to the same reel. It is the first generation Shimano Calais imported by SEA Trading when the shop was in Jalan Sultan. It is heavy by today’s standard. Slow ratio of 1:5. But it is butter smooth. It is silent unlike the the Conquests and Digital ones with their typical whirrring sound when the spool speeds goes red hot. It is not temperamental like the magnetic Millionaire. It is… just an obedient servant.

It is because I am so used to a Calais 201 -5 that this old faithful stays with me all the times. Ever since I started fishing with it, all the other reels have been kept aside gathering dust. It just obeys to my whims and fancies. And it sits on my fishing rod all the times.

It is a great reel. I found out about this after trying out the digital ones, the TE ones, the magnetic ones and the super tuned ones. Each one of them has something to surpass a Calais. But none of them could surpass it in the feel when it is cradled in your hand.

Dont get jealous. Because this reel is still available in the Antares version.

gee thanks…

so what is to what and which is to which…

let say i want to throw a big lure 28g-25g which morrum

and another one set up for 7-15g…

what i understand is that..no matter what reel that you’re using
mus t be suited to the weight of lures..

and some reels are specially built for a job…

well, may i know what you knew about this on the morrums…

thanks for the reply..

I’m down south bro FT…somewhere in the jungle between pahang,n.sembilan and johore…

don’t quote me but i think the red ZX1600/1601 would be great for 7-15g lures. this is IVCB-4

the blue ZX BJ</font id=“blue”> is IVCB-4 as well, but i am not so sure
about the castability as i’ve yet to try one

i have the blue ZX LJ model and it’s a pain to cast lures under 10g. it is IVCB-2 only, so i guess the cast control is not as efficient. anyways, the reel was made for light jigging, so it justifies itself i guess. casting 20-40g jigs is a joy though. used it to cast kembung rigs for tenggiris as well, nice reel to lob the baits.

sounds like u live in K.Pilah/Bahau area? [:D]
