Bro Tan:

Which part of Brunei are you fishing at? Fresh water is something i do not hear often. My family is in KB. So far i only done fishing in KB Town. There is a big river just by the wet market. Plenty of small GT <1kg.

I do not associate with MEAT HUNTER.

Bro Tembaring,
Nice catch, nice report.
Wish we have nice rivers in JB, like what you have in Tawau…
Launching of boat, variety of fish etc…
Cheers!

anyway we’ll be staying very close to main city, and not far from airport… the only place i know is haruan fishing at the canal flanking both side of the road dirrectly outside airport… how’s the fishing there now? my fren says nobody over there bothered to touch those ‘longkangs’, cept maybe for foreign workers la

Tembaring bro, no problem will definitely update here mate!

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

Tembaring,
congrats. I have heard stories about these Black Bass. How big do they grow. Some say that there are more aligned to the mangrove jack than black bass (as per those found in PNG).
I have been drooling over the videos of Black Bass fishing in PNG.
Well done again

Carry a rod and speak softly.

Flicker bro,

According to the IGFA it is a MJ, but to me i will rather call it the Borneo Black Bass! [:D] There are too many facts and prove that The Borneo Black Bass is not a MJ! We have caught BBass at a totally freshwater region while MJ prefer to the saltwater region. When MJ grows to 3kg above they will migrate to the sea to grow bigger and mate. That’s why we seldom catch MJ that is more then 3kg big. While BBass on the other hand, the biggest our group have caught is a 14kg BBass. Ok maybe the color of this fish changes on different environment setting, so cannot argue that, but the head, eye, teeth, lips, fins and body. Has an obvious different, even the behaviour is different…

Huhuhu.. this topic has been debated already and i am not going to start this again..[:)]. I guess IGFA is still holding to their believes that our Borneo Black Bass is a MJ. But whatever it is, I still consider them as our Borneo Black Bass..[:)][:D][8D]

Cheers..

I still believe the one that our landlord landed was a BLACK BASS.

Yes Uncle Thomas, it is definitely, 100% sure it is a Black Bass NOT a Mangrove Jack as claim by the IGFA.

Eat,Sleep,Fish! & Fish! & Fish!

I stayed in Semporna for about ten years, I have fished and eaten numerous black bass which has the orange fat, whereas the MJ has white fat. The BB is light brownish in the body with light yellowish green fins, whereas the MJ is dark brown redish body with brown fins. Size to size, the BB is broader than the MJ. Fishing wise, THE BB also fights harder than the MJ.

Rite on! Uncle Thomas!! Hidup Borneo Black Bass!!! [:D]

Tembaring and Thomas,
thanks for the clarification. I agree with the aspect of MJ going to sea when they get bigger.
I believe the PNG black bass also live is brackish and freshwater and they do grow big.
So who cares what the igfa says - lets call it black bass.

Yes we call it Black Bass! Is our native Malaysian fish anyway, who cares what other people call it? [:D]
