Terrestrial Flies....

Hi all,

Ever heard of Tenkara Fly Fishing ? Kekeke…

It is an old traditional Japanese Fly Fishing technique which is used in the mountain streams for Yamame.

You can see some links here.

Read this few articles / links & experiences the trills of this technique.

As simple as a modern graphic telescopic rod & with flies ! Yes & you are ON to enjoy the game. While the new wave of fly pole rodders, do take a serious look into “dapping” this fly technic & it has earn me some good scores back in 2006.

This Gourami was scored on a size 16, Hairwing Caddis on a 2.7m Telescopic Prawn Rod, 2.7m of 3lb mono ….. Talking about running around, left … right …left … right …. Extreme fly fishing… try this…

Year 2007 is quite a turn for me. After such a long while on deep water nymphing & saltwater flies. This year I have took time & pain to brush my on whipping with dry flies & especially bigger terrestrial flies.

While presentation of the fly & accuracy to flip the fly to the fish yet not spooking her, plays a major challenge to this game. Irregardless of daytime or night time, as long as your target is close enough to spot your offer. The chance is there.

Here’s some little memories that I would like to share with you guys. Try the dries & hoppers in your own freshwater backyard. You will like the presentation game. [:D]

Here’s a saltwater Archer fish on a CDC Ant.

Another one.

Here’s a sultan on a Terrestrial Hopper

Arrowana on the hopper.

Parrot on the Hopper

Pink Kalui on the Hopper

Sliver Arrowana on the Hopper

Strip Gourami on a Black Stimulator.

Peacock on a Black Stimulator

Red Tail Gourami. This is a pain, this pal is so spooky that it took me almost 3 months to stalk this fish from taking my fly. Each time, I only have 2 cast the most at the fish & he will wisen up & shut his mouth to all my offer… finally gotten him!

I had this Alligator Gar scored on a Stimulator in the night in the mist of the lily pads.

Hey, Hey, Hey…

Here’s the latest catch, still fresh from today’s dusk.

While having Exam got her privileges! After a day of turmoil with the exam notes…

It’s tough not to excuse myself to some Terrestrial Hoppers. Okie. Let limit myself to a 30 minutes whipping session before dusk. kekeke… Turn up to be the biggest session of the month or the year!

I get to hook 2 arrowana in just 5 minutes! Kekeke… the 1st big mama flopped off the hopper! I estimate her to be about 1.5ft… almost nearing whooping 2 feet long. Crap… :engarde:

After which I goes after 2nd smaller one tailing behind. A soft landing made in front of this bugger & a “drowning moth” twitch… kekeke…

Haha! I get to squeeze her neck!

Have a try with Terrestrial Flies. You will love the presentation game.

Tight Lines! Jim.

A gentle landing… a gentle flash of the orange flank… this peacock turn & dives with the Terrestrial Hopper firmly in the mouth…

Peacocks do have their gentle touch in sipping terrestrial flies too.

Although it is not the most productive method of using dries to catch a peacock…

Nevertheless, all rules applied the same for successful dry flies fishing… you will need some stealth, gentle landing of fly & a certain degree of accuracy & placement in order to trigger a take from the peacock.

Tight lines. Jim

jim… share with ur your hopper fly here

walaueehhhh,kulau ong,
you open your business as early 5.00am ah,[:0][:0]

Hi Mikey,

no lah. It has been a while I did not use the pole rod liao. With the few new light sticks… it’s quite addictive to fish the flies on a proper fly set.

The hopper pattern is called Dave’s Hopper that I have used extensively.

Wah… Kurau boss… not cover up any parts of you body lah but try practicing casting to fish behind bush, tree, cover …or as low as your body can get down with reference to the ground vegetation.

Hahahaha… anyway nice hat you have there. hahaha…

haha… I have tried many hopper patterns but none meet the dave’s fish-ability…

With the Deer hair square top floating easily with a dap of floatant, the yarn at the back will eventually absorb much water & the butt sinks to sit 45 degree downwards … You add in a small slight twitch or 2, it will simulate a drowning insect trying to swim.

Size 10 is my preferred hook size. But at times size 8 or size 14 will help in some unique situations.

Here today’s addition. A little Haruan on the hopper.

I was in fact aiming for a white tilapia for the cast. As the fly landed just in front of my target. This little greed one came shooting out from it’s lair to pop the hopper.

Really greedy or hungry one. She missed the 1st 2 rounds with her frantic clashes & finally nail her on my 3rd cast.

*One finer note… I am in fact 8-9m away from the water edge. So only a small portion of my furled leader & bite tippet is on the water. Most of the fly line are on top of the grass & bushes in front of me. For hopper fishing, you really need hone your approach with some stealth & accuracy as accordingly to situation.

Tight lines & enjoy! Jim.

Wow!!! Jimmy very very impressive. Thanks a lot for sharing and can learn a lot from the master.

Hi Jimmy,

The arowana was very nice, where did you catch them?

sell that arowana to me, the RTG one

Hi guys,

It has been a while since I last share with this forum …
It has been quite some fishing moments for me lately.
At least for now … I may get to whip the rod about 3 times a week.
Kekeke… not too bad at all …

Ok … here’s some on the past experiences…

Having been shifted from the western to the eastern side of Singapore, took me quite a while to finally feels at home to start enjoying the eastern water bodies conveniently. Dawn is always my favorite time frame for some fly rodding actions.

One of the plus point of my new place … kekeke … is a backyard reservoir loaded with bunch of peacock bass & other freshwater targets. For this while, as much as can, I would just like to concentrating on fishing terrestrials & dry flies. Brushing up my approach & casting accuracy.

There are quite some Peacocks in general, with a very small population of Snakehead, Arrowanas & Gourami forming my usual target. Along the water edge will harbors some great chance to pick up Snakeheads & Arrowanas.

Using fast retrievals & baitfish patterns, like charlie or streamer etc, we get heaps of Peacock basses here. When it comes to presenting them with a large terrestrial in a still water condition, Peacocks becomes a lot more observant & are tough nuts to crack with terrestrial flies or nymphs. You can drift the fly & nymph across the hunting school, with most of them coming close to inspection & never bothers to munch the offer, same as for nymphs. Nevertheless, some intensive perseverance did pays off with rare takes along some surprise catches too.

This Peacock is the largest & my best size for taken on Nymphs (Size 14 muncher nymph)

In the dawn, a number of moths & other insects will hatch. usually ends up as spents for the Gourami & arrowana to pick off. They forms the bulk of my “approach-ables” & will usually cooperate in accepting terrestrial flies.

A look of the local moth that will usually hatch during dawn & ends up as spent for the fishes to pick off.

Gourami are for sure the best sippers of dry flies here. As long as your approach comes along with a bit of stealth & accuracy, you would enjoy casting a dry to Gourami. They are quite gentle but yet powerful swimmers. As Gourami are air breathers, they will give away their position from time to time. You would have approx. 4-5 seconds to make a gentle cast to the fish before she takes a gulp of air & dives down again. At this point, your shoulder outline & shadow will usually spook them off during this situation. A gentle twitch during her close up inspection of the terrestrial will trigger the fish to sip in the fly. Hang on as the 1st dash can be quite a handful with a big one.

A stripped Gourami nicely sipped a dave hopper.

Talking about big fat greedy Gourami, this species is my favourite to approach sipping a hopper… nevertheless, this one took a white muddler in the early dawn.

Another stripped Gourami

This pearly arrowana picks & taken on a size 14 white muddler.

Here’s one great fish hooked with some acrobatic skills on the recent sunday.

This is one of the spooky ones that I have been stalking these mornings. Finally get to tango with her acrobatic stunts.

While this Flame Oscar was a rare catch of the day. Oscars are not spooky in their highly predatory behavior. They will try & try again to attack the fly until u eventually hook them in the mouth. Well, this is one nice freshwater “Triple tail” on the terrestrials.

Cheers & Tight Lines!
Jim.
