" Mike and EK Wong asked John to retie their rig " - KK

While we anxiously wait for KK to poison us further with the " BIG ONE ", it would be useful to share some new things that we learned about fishing knots that John taught us.

I have been using the Albright and Double Uni for years - 20 lb braid main line, and 40/50 lb Asso leader. While these have more than served me well in the past, the fish in BSR and Boon Mah require a stronger and more lasting knot.

Google up the " FG Knot " / " Mid Knot " - there is also an animated version to show how these are done. Takes a bit more time, but did not see a single slip in the 3 days - well worth learning.

… and also do not use the normal swivels - get the ones meant for sea fishing. I have a picture of my completely demolished so called " 80 lb " swivel.

Yup, you are right Mike. I have been using the FG / Mid knot for a while now and I find that it is a superior knot. However, like all other knots, it is only good if it is well tied. I have seen and also experienced first hand, the FG knot slipping at the crucial moment when it was not tied well [:(]. It is not quite an easy knot to tie but lots of practice and confidence in the tying of the knot is the way to go.

I still uses this knot for all my leader to braid until a better and easier knot comes around.[:)]. Still searching[:D]

Just eliminate the swivel by using FG knots. Problem with Albright knot is you are not able to cast properly as the knot may stuck at the ring guide when you try to cast. Further more, FG knot should be the strongest! Hail… FG knot! [8D]

At first look it is difficult to tie FG, but practice makes perfect. But I have to admit that to tie a 10lbs FG knot is really a no easy task. [8D]

talk about asking for trouble, I went to BoonMa with a simple 7ft casting rod and my trusty (and vintage) Ryobi T1. I also decided to test my own lures and not use the Thai versions. Well I did get the siakaps but my Ryobi is now making funny noises and my rod is missing a ring. Two of my lures came back with straightened hooks and I lost no less than 6 pieces of lures, including 2 thai-made ones which I did you in desperation. What a trip, great and exciting fishing, delicious food and above all cheap beer.

anyone that fish like we did would appreciate the special cocktail of Thai Mekong whiskey, That Red-Bull (red label) and soda water over ice cubes. A couple of those and you will be ready for more fishing.

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

" Just eliminate the swivel by using FG knots. Problem with Albright knot is you are not able to cast properly as the knot may stuck at the ring guide … " - Jason

Agreed, but in my case, it was not a problem as I was only using a 2 - 3 foot leader. ( well maybe originally 3 1/2 foot, then cut, cut, cut - 2 foot )

The point I was trying to make is the amount of abuse that the Albright / Double Uni could take. In the local trips that I usually make, I was lucky to get 2 - 4 fish with a total of about 10 - 12 kg. per trip.

In BSR and Boon Mah - you have fish much bigger and stronger, and you also get a helluva lot more hits. This is a tremendous test on the knots we use, as well as our skill in tying.

KK did not have this problem at all - because he is used to having to handle monsters in the sea. His knots were robust, and his tying skills much better than mine.

Yup - am going to practice on the FG / Midknot as much as possible. Just thought that some of you may want to be better prepared for your own trip.

Bro,
Been reading your write-up and I am sure you are not telling angler’s tales about EK! Him only hitting Patins where-as you guys hit Plabuks left and right seems the correct description about EK where fishing is concerned…and so is the story of the bottles of fire water consumed!

Good and interesting write-up. Kinda kept me at the edge of my seat waiting for the next chapter but I have to say that I find it hard to believe that you gave those “entertainment” spots a miss after consuming all those “ahem” natural aphrodisiacs! And to top it off, you were all alone in a strange town, did you not had the urge need to seek out some company to while the long lonely night away?

Unless of course, you decided to “tar pau” instead![;)][;)][;)]
