Hi Peter,
Understand the group is more into popping & jigging stuff and may be some bottom fishing in the night so I believed they are not so much concerned about the catch for the table that what I heard but more on bedning their light popping & jigging gear.
U might be rite if they are not going after table catches Ah Tee… Ya heard from friends nowdays Tukun Perak fish is dwindling in size and catches… popping n jigging is still ok…
Popping and jigging for GTs, you probably better off going to Pulau Jarak.
GT Chaser is one good operator for “sports” fishing.
Our last trip there to Pulau Jarak, at least still got 20+ kg GT landed.

Tukun Perak I haven’t been there for more than 5 years, my largest GT
caught there was only 16kg and from catch report in subsequent years
has been but a dismal.
Tukun Perak is called so because the island is white due to bird droppings,
now it should no longer be called so, due to there are tree growth there
now, as the birds are gone (meaning no more baitfish there, which also
implies the predator fish like GTs also gone).
There used to be an army base guarding a lighthouse on top of the island,
but the last I heard the base is abandoned and the lighthouse has gone
to pieces as stuff was stolen from it after the army abandoned it.
During the construction of the lighthouse, the mostly Indonesian workers
there was hawking salted GTs to us, as there is nothing to do there, so they
are popping for GTs everyday.
So, really, still got fish there ?
There are couple of charter operator here in Penang who still likes to
take people there, mainly bcoz they can charge an arm and a leg to go
the 80+nm to Tukun Perak.
For my money, I would rather go on GT Chaser operating from Bagan Datoh,
more productive GT catches whether on pop or jig. You also get to do some
decent bottom fishing there.

Pete, u have a point there regarding there’s no more birds around and thus meaning there’s no bait fish and leading to no predator fishes like GT… i agree with ur point there and theres another point, some skipper knowing the fish population n sizes have dwindle n yet they still take client there…this i cant blame them for doing so in order for them to put food on the table for their family…some skipper are good but some are not…
An experience angler like u is hard to come by nowdays brudder Pete… One has to be alert of the condition and serounding of the fishing spot one wants to go and i notice that u do ur homework b4 every trip…rite Pete???

last trip was in mar this yr.
like pete said, fishing there is quite poor now but once in a blue moon if u r lucky…
i go there every yr for sentimental reasons…n just to catch up with my frens from KL & Sin.
Dec is a good date, chances for getting a GT is better but then the weather, well depends on your luck.
I hv been there a few times cant fish at all due to the heavy wind, so stuck near the jetty where fishing is very poor. used to hv lots of rainbow runners near the jetty but now no more.
like pete said, the island is white due to bird droppings but now lots of vegetation ( which last time don’t hv due to lots of birds ) as the bird population had dwindled. soldiers there collect eggs for makan.
last trip i went was 5.2k per boat…sigh…when i first when there it was 2.8k only…n lots of fishes…

have not been to tukan perak in my life and look like this is the place to miss and very sad to know there is one less good fishing spot in penang now.
