I’m openning this topic just to discuss on this mysterious fish that has been said almost extinct in rivers of malaysia due to overfishing. However, knowing that this is probably one of the biggest fish in the waters of malaysia.. I’m tempted to know and discuss this fish with all of you guys.. as i know this fish is also said to be found in spain ? same look and same features ?
spain??? no la tat;s another type of catfish tat looks similar to tapah, just greyish with spots around the body, called wel catfish. Tapah is dark brown with 1 or 2 parallel white line along the tail to the back of the gill
not extinct yet… but endangered, or near extinct lah…
not due to overfishing, more like overnetting… and also trapping them upriver when they breed. Poison n sometimes nets captured to young and killed in the process… larger ones are hard to come by and hard to grow to those sizes cos the small ones are killed for nothing
I only have 13 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!
I’m interested in this fish also. I know peoples go on trip to fish for Toman, Kelah and Sebarau. But Tapah should be quite a good fighting fish seeing its size. Why there are not boatman that can specifically bring people to fish for Tapah?
Bcoz the Fisheries Department of Malaysia gives the boatman & guides specific orders not to bring people to fish Tapah, as they are an endangered species?
speaking about tapah..there are still giantic ones around.if you know where to find them..if you ask old timers here they use catch tapah using live ducks as baits in kenyir..thats was the olden days…are there commercial tapah breeders?..
another method is trolling along sungai pahang..i saw a picture of this huge monster-about 80-100 kilos in news 10-15 years back(berita harian-joran)..

Kelah was also be supposing endangered species, but still many tour on fishing them, just a strict CnR basic. I think if Tapah do for the same, it can not just attract many local anglers but oversea as well because of their enormous size.
blacklisted becoz no fish to be caught. haha! some point.. =))
i caught baby tapah at small stream in bukit beruntung. i wonder where they come from.. veyr small black tapah.. haha~~ den i was thinking what are the chances of them living in sungai selangor ? nearly close to zero ?
sooner or later, they would be done for sure.
my friend just got info that they can be caught in some river in johor during dec and jan..
tapah is not nearly extinct but its just hard to catch.they are there in the water but they are not taking the bait.but if you use a jala, thye can be caught..there are abundance of tapah at sg dusun especially at the blackwater peat swamp.
seabass.. are you really sure they are abundance ? I wouldnt mind to try and fish them up.. it would be fun. once in awhile catch a different type of fish.
tjs, thx for the details. yeah, it is the tapah bemban. but in smaller size like kimpin.. haha~ glass like body.
wow, thailand really ada banyak fishes.. lols~~ same species, different genus.. but malaysia also got 2 types that can be eaten.. one is yellow an another is black ..
Here in India the wallago is going down. These days we are releasing all the fishes of less than 1kg. The photos are listed on my blog. deccanangler.blogspot.com

hate to disabuse you of that notion but it’s the reverse more often than not and these %%^)()&^$&)#(%^(#^#_)%%#$%&$^#&% are very proud about it … makes one sick to look at their arrogant, self-justified catches
Given the constant battle between fish & fishios (we know who always loose), what chances does a fish nowadays get to grow up to 2kg & more? Every now & then, self-proclaimed CnR activist would take home fish & make their own justifications to do so.
Most noble of them are the CnR fishios which ONLY take fish home if they are gut hooked & have done all they can prevent such occurrence. etc. removing barbs, avoid trebles, use round hooks.
Some will say, they will release fish of less than 1kg - The norm practice of ethical fishios (partly the fish is too small for eating)
Some will only do CnR for freshwater, but when they hit the seas, any fishes is a harvest. (partly bcoz the fishio don’t like eating freshwater fish & the high cost to do boat based sea fishing)
Some will say, I’m doing CnRelocate, but they would actually take it to their favorite ponds or their own private farms. (either intro invasive species into the pond OR the fish in private farm stays stunted).
Some will say, I’m only releasing the local species, any foreign fish caught, PBs, Pacu, Tilapia is straight to the wok.
Some will only release specific fish that they love but any other species is to be killed. We got the Toman fans. Haruan fans. Kelah fans & etc.
Some would release fish only if they are under peer pressure.
Some thick-skinned fishios would sapu everything except the tiniest of them. Otherwise, it’s “sedap jugak, kalau goreng” or “boil soup”.
Some overly enthusiastic loud-mouth punks youngsters would bark excessively at other anglers who choose to take 1 fish home on the internet but when they come face2face with the angler, stays quiet like a dead fish.
Ultimately, everyone wants fish whether they are dead or alive for their own purposes.
In the end, fish stock continue to deplete & sizes continue to shrink. This issue is fast becoming a problem for both fresh & saltwater anglers. Without a government sanctioned, regulating/enforcement body to monitor fishing activity in Malaysia. We could well be heading in the direction like many other foreign countries which suffers greatly to their fisheries. Indirectly affecting fishing & tourism industries. I wonder what is our government still dragging their feet to enact license-to-fish regulations & strict rules pertaining to what size & what species are allowed to be taken home.
I can only think of one reason, & that’s political in nature. Restrict/enforce fishing rules & the low-income, low-ethic, folks would be voting the alternative parties.
