want? need?

why do we want something we don’t need? why do we need something that we don’t want?</font id=“size5”></font id=“red”>

recently i was in a dilemma.

i have always been happy & content with my Daiwa Alphas 103L R-edition. i use it for casting for mangove jacks, siakap, toman, sebarau & grouper. in fact, it has been my ‘default’ reel for all my fishing, including apollo jigging. gets the job done, with flying colours everytime.

it casts extremely well with magforce V, much lighter than many reels out there, smooth, and palms well in my hands. add to that a decent line capacity, handsome sharp looks and a touch of enthusiast feel, the reel was the perfect low-profile BC for me.

until last week when i fished with my friend who was using a Shimano Calcutta Conquest 201 DC, that is…

if there’s something about the gimmick called DC (digital control), it has got to be that addictive ‘zzzzzeeeeetttt’ sound when casting.

cast’zzzzzeeeeetttt’, crank crank crank…cast ‘zzzzzeeeeetttt’, crank crank crank…cast’zzzzzeeeeetttt’, crank crank crank…cast’zzzzzeeeeetttt’…

while i do not like the bulky reel, the round profile, the hefty drag, the price tag… somehow the ‘zzzzeeeeetttt’ sound when casting seems to eliminate the visual & tactile senses of mine.

my dilemma: a ‘perfect reel’ became less than perfect because of a dull sounding cast… a reel i would never buy with the most addictive casting sound. damn me…

since i am not a big fan of round reels, i have turned towards the Antares DC. still too heavy, too shiny, too pricey.

stopped down to a metanium DC, but didn’t like the look & feel of it.

what other DC choices am i left with?

IF, a big IF, i am going to get a DC reel for the sake of that *&^^%£$!"£@ sound, might as well get the cheapest of the DC series?

and then i sat down for a while, and let the issue with the sound pass by. after about a week now, i am still with my old reel. i wondered about the sound made me doubt my little reel. holding it now, i look at it and smile.

good try there, DC. almost got me there. hehehehe

it really boils down to ‘wants’ and ‘needs’.

no matter how much i wanted the reel with the ‘zzeeeettt’ sound, there is really no need for it(yet), in the type of fishing that i do.

and no matter how much i needed to hear the ‘zzzeeeeeettt’ sound of the cast, i really do not want the other attributes of that reel.

some of us buy impulsively, and end up with more than we can chew.

some of us think too much, and then let the moment pass you by.

was just wondering about the rest of you guys here.

have u ever wondered which category of tackle-shoppers u belong to? [:D]

WAR: it’s not about who’s RIGHT, it’s about who’s LEFT

Oh man … ! What an intro to TAS … lol

Aaah, we will always want what we do not have.
The grass always seems greener on the other side.
Our mates’ gear always:
a) catches our eyes
b) seems more attractive
c) seems better
d) performs better
e) sounds more attractive or better [:p]

New releases always does all of the above and more … [:D]

Wants always outstrips needs.

Strip away hype, conduct hands-on testing, realise and acknowledge our current fishing styles, requirements and needs, take a good look at our pockets usually helps dispel those insane urges, if not totally [:o)]

Reason should prevail over passion but how many of us can actually pull it off? [:p]

I lurrrrve the Stella FD when i first set eyes on it. But cost is too high. I was getting nowhere pining after that piece of gear.
Research followed and i looked at possible alternatives.
Hearing first hand experience from a Stella user put paid to my dreams … LOL and I’m much happier for it.

Now, i look at reasonable gear, meaning reasonable when it comes to price, performance, ROI … basically, something that’ll last me to my grandchildren if i take care of it [^]. This, after considering the type of fishing i subject the gear to (some might wanna consider frequency, too).

I jes’ want something good, worth investing in and not too expensive, a pleasure to use (shyok sendiri [:p]).
fwiw, i’d rather pay a similar amount for a Van Staal instead of the Stella.

I like to think i’ve matured … but … !
There will always be the occasional impetuous buy … limited to clips, hooks, lures (ouch).

nx time just ask the person who is beside u to make the “zeeeeet” sound each time u cast. problem solved! hahahahaha…

no probs there…i was just presenting a typical scenario which u guys may face, that’s all. hahhaahaha

btw, it’s a good reel nonetheless. easy casting, good power, good line cap n all, but a bit heavy for me. not really suited for the type & style of fishing that i do anyway.

FT,

Hehehehehe… I see you still cannot get over it can you now… your statement brings a big smile to my face:

why do we want something we don’t need? why do we need something that we don’t want?

Please note before hand.. if you continue to read further this little post you might regret it…

In fishing all we actually need is a line and an empty old tin, some hooks, sinker and bait.. and we are ready to go.. so why do we buy fishing rods and reels and so on and so forth… fishing is fishing.. be it by lures or bait…why do Anglers want to complicate things.. get the basic gear and the angler can still catch fish maah…this would the be the base argument for a NON Angler hehehehehehee…

Now, when it comes to you me and probably about 60% and more of the angling population…
Fishing or should I say angling is a hobby, some might call it a sport some might call it a hunt and some might call it putting meat on the table.. no matter which faction you sit in or stand with… we all do it for FUN.. every angler will get his kicks from different facets of this activity… some do it for EGO, some just loves to catch, some for a bit of “ME” time, or just as a game and so on and so forth…

Now back to the statement there would be some parts that I would agree and some I would really beg to differ… in fishing there is nothing that we really NEED other than what makes us happy with this activity, which then becomes more of a WANT than a NEED.. how ever what we WANT is to maximize our enjoyment of this activity as such we the NEED this enjoyment to make our trips or short excursion to be as hahahahah ENJOYABLE as possible.. GOD knows all of us needs more time on the water fishing rather than working or studying or taking care of the baby (hint hint.. might get you in trouble.. don’t angry aaah) hahahahaha or whatever it is.. we have this NEED to really enjoy this activity.. and for you FT, you are a known “tackle junkie” and if the new found audio stimulation that comes from a Shimano DC is what you WANT; however it becomes a toy that you NEED to make that trip a perfect one.. so what happens when a WANT becomes a need… an addiction so to speak ..
If that is the case then so be it.. I say “go for it”.. don’t think too much about it, bite the bullet and throw caution to the wind… get the reel and go fishing… why think so much.. don’t spend that precious time thinking when you can be taking that new puppy of your for spin… after all we only live once and at the rate Malaysian fishing quality and quantity is going… there might not be any fish left by the time you make your decision… so next week if you can right after you read this, go to the tackleshop.. get that shiny little plastic card from your wallet and pass it to the lovely girl at the counter and say.. “can you please take the CQ201 from the shelf pack it up for me”…

I think we spend too much time thinking about what we WANT and NEED… how about thinking that we live only ONCE.. how about thinking about how much FUN we can get out fishing or buying that tackle that we believe that will make our fishing a more enjoyable trip..

What I do need to also make clear is that having expensive tackle or a lot of tackle does not make us a better angler.. hehehehehe it might be a boost to our EGO’s gives us that little edge.. so we think but ONE thing I sure know for sure… it makes our fishing experience a hell of a lot better…why you ask? Well its bec we WANT it and it is our firm belief that we NEED it that would make the experience even better…hahahahahahahaha

On the even brighter side the acquisition of your spanking new reel might just motivate you to spend more time on the water.. and hence bring your angling skills to another level, as they say “practice makes perfect” and there is nothing that can substitute for time on the water casting that lure chasing that fish…

So at the end of the day the equation of
FT WANTS DC = FT NEEDS DC
bec.
DC = more fun = more angling time = even more fun + bonus of improved fishing skills…
Stands…
How can u go wrong with that???

For those who cannot afford expensive tackle or just cannot find the will to pay that money for that tackle, fret not.. fishing is fishing.. you fish within your means and perhaps it is the reel that you aspire to buy in the future.. motivates you to work harder and what not… nothing beats a goal with a wonderful motivation on getting that dreamed after tackle … does not matter what you own as long as you have a tonne of FUN fishing… but wouldn’t it be even more FUN if you had the DC … hehehehehe

No pain no gain, dont try dont know… muahahahahaha

btw, KL, thanks for setting me up with sengiran - lurrrrve the finishing on that rod. [:D]
however, sengiran’s rod seems a ittle heavy - is it due to the graphite composite blank or because it is light medium?

i do want and need a rod that’ll hold up and serve well. [:D]
when are you putting in those orders, please?

Acheong,

I will be in kl this weekend. I will try to bring some UL, L, LM and M rods for you to compare. Kinda difficult to explain to you here in the forum. You will need to feel these rods to fully understand and appreciate.</font id=“purple”>
