In Singapore here we call it “Kuku” or “Toad fish” Not poisonous but has a spike at the back of the body. If poke by it will be very pain. So not to grab the body by bare hand while unhook. Eidible but hard to get bigger size. Ever saw a live seafood restaurant here selling at S$40.00 per kg include cooking.[:p]

Leadhunters and wkl2020 is right, this fish is definitely poisonous and is not edible.

Haha…U guys has mixed up toad fish and stone fish. I have to agree most people can’t see the different. Especially if U don’t see it often. Toad fish which this photo show is not poisonous. Stone fish(superreel photo) is poisonous only on the spike. Remove it and also can be eaten. Look carefully on both U will see the difference.

caught this fish last sunday.. with my dad’s saltwater rig.. not sure what it is called.
people there told me not to touch it cos poisonous.
i leave the hook on the fish mouth.. [:D]
Rod : Relix 16-30lbs 6ft ???
Reel : Tomman TG 1000
Line : 30lbs Braided ???
Best fish : 1.2kg Haruan/Snakehead, 5kg Pacu, 800g Ketutu/SoonHock, 4.3kg Patin, Tongsan 7.25kg, Rohu 2.65kg, Talapia 1kg, Ikan Keli 900g.
Experience : 3+ months..
That picture is a TOADFISH, looks very ugly and sings a terrible song like ‘kook kook kook’ , contrary to the believe that it is poisonous, the TOADFISH IS A DELICACY, the meat is white after taking out the skin, taking care that you will not be pricked by the sharp tiny spines on the head, it is painful, but not poisonous.
Stir fried with ginger, garlic, cili api & black soy sauce, it is finger licking good, especially the head, it is yummy. Unfortunately it is not easy to come by, if you can get 3 or 4, you should try cooking it, bet you will have no regret. If you get only 1 or 2, you might as well release them.

Hi, saw this thread and was intrigue by the looks of the fish myself..caught a few in the past but gladly let em off to sea until I saw them again yesterday at Tambun restaurant. Decided to give it a try “Ginger Steamed”…Marvellous the meat texture! Yumyum…better than some fish I’ve had before..

Haha, are you sure that was the toadfish that you have eaten and not the ketutu [soon hock]. The toadfish is very hard to come by and if you can catch a few during your fishing trip, it is like striking a lottery.
Btw, how much is the restaurant price per 100gm ?? Next time you should try a different way of cooking like “chau kam hiong”, bet you will not regret.

Haha…definately confirm not marble goby/ketutu..they’re much more handsome than this toadfish..I dunno if they’re really hard to come by as I saw a couple of restaurants in Butterworth here having them in the tanks…the call it “tiger fish”, “lao hu yu”..they look very puny when they compared with groupers..Here’s they dun sell it by grams..they sell it by sizes, Rm6 to RM8 per fish…
I’ll try “kam hiong” next time!!! thanks for recommendation…
