I am a newbie in FF. Places I fish have obstructions behind me. This means overhead is not possible. I am currently relying on roll cast to shoot my line forward. I am using line weight 8 with an 8 footer rod. Distance I can achieve on windless day would be approximately 30 feet (rod tip to end of leader). Is there other techniques to improve my casting distance??? Advice needed.

Hi, I’d say roll casting with an 8ft rod is not going to get you much distance. The length and action/taper of the rod plays a part too. For roll casting I prefer a double taper line and a more medium action rod. If you’re not going to buy a new rod or line just for that location, dunno if you can just back cast at a higher angle( look back to check!) will be sufficient.. Other alternative coud be switch somewhere else, or maybe be imaginative with a parang/axe[}:)] My 2cents worth.
single handle spey casting…this is the solution.
on roll cast …it doesnt matter what line or rod you are using, they all could perform good roll cast. the trick is to get to know your rod and line…find out their strong and weak points then adjust your casting to suit it.
buying a new set just to roll cast, would be a waste…and i must say naive
Ari,
Is there any site recommended for spey casting? What is the distance it can acheive??

dear all,
anyone know how to download that file to be kept in the hard disk???

google ‘youtube downloader’, it should save it in .flv file (opens with flv player)which can later be converted to .avi, .mpg, .mp4, .3gp to be uploaded into ur PDA/ipod/PSP/handphone or any portable devices

hi v_ish,you can roll cast 60 feet or more with any rod.make a longer loop on the back cast and cast forward the usual way.it’s easier to show you how on a field or pond nearby.it’s also possible to roll cast the same distance on a tar road. cheers.
