When the Going Gets Tough, Go Fishing...!!!

While i was away…fishing, those that hated my guts walloped me endlessly in the cyberworld but if you think what they said are true, you obviously do not know who i am. Me being the craziest fisho in MFN won’t allow such thing to happened cos i a KURAUKING…despite those who assumed my photos are fake. Just to let you know, i’ve told many of my customers how i’ve caught my fish and i told each of them a different story. This way i would know who betrayed me…[:D]

I know who you are…betrayer…!!!
(Btw, KURAUKING is just my internet nickname which doesn’t mean anything)

I started foruming in MFN in 2005, at that time i uses my internet nickname KURAUKING and i tried my best to assist MFN forumers in English and Bahasa Malaysia section to improve in their fishing skill and also to promote fishing in Port Klang without letting them know that i am own a tackle shop. I was just sharing my knowledge base on my fishing experience and many benefited from my knowledge.
I’ve invited many MFN forumers to fish at my spot and we shared our fishing skill among each others. Team Buduz are one of the first few peoples that we shared our fishing knowledge. Here some of the photograph we took during our fishing outing…

In today’s fast moving world with all the many distractions – many of us forget easily their true values – waste time on wrong paths of life and suddenly life is over before it really started. What are your values of life, is it your family, freedom, your culture of personal values that you have achieved and preserved that deserve your protection and a high ranking priority in life ? Are you aware of your true values in life and do you protect and support or promote these values ? Take a time – in peace and may be in nature – to think about what is of true innermost value to you.

My fishing buddies from Team Budu of MFN decided to promote these values through the event of a Family Day gathering. We anglers sometimes do feel bad for leaving our family at home to go fishing during holidays and weekends. A Family Day to let our Family members enjoy themself with fellow angler families. Family time is something we all say we value, but few of us actually experience. Who really believes that we’ll have more time in a few years than we have now? Busy lifestyles don’t change when we reach a certain age; they just become more deeply ingrained.
Making a moment for our family to know that we anglers do love our family, is crucial for a happy family. This Family Day that we planned was such an event to commemorate family values. Family is there to support us in times of trouble and heartache. When life throws unimaginable tragedy at you, it is family that gathers around and buoys you up until you can walk on your own again. This Family Day has made me realise that we are not from many families but of one big happy family.

After that, i expand my generosity by inviting more MFN forumers to test try my playground…

OK, that’s beside the point…as long someone benefited from my sacrifice here in MFN, i am contended. I figure out that Port Klang is not the only place with fish so i venture out to various part of Malaysia to finds the best fishing spot and report here in MFN…

…just to name a few…[:D]

My worst fishing trip was in Bangkok with a guy called John Ang(BKKGUY). That’s the worst fishing guide i’ve encountered in my fishing career. He managed to conned me(on my first trip to BKK on Jan 2010) into believing that he was being attacked and bullied by the Local(Thai) fishing guide and he persuaded me to help him to promote his company. I was naive and i believed him thus i wrote a REPORT in this MFN FISHING REPORT section to promote his services. I took pity on him on what he had told me but i saw his true colour on my second trip using his services on MARCH 2010.
On my second trip to Bangkok, i found out the John Ang(BKKGUY) was actually undercutting the local fishing guide fees and he lied to me that he was sabotaged by the Thai Local Fishing Guide.
Knowing this, i tested him by using the ‘Bait’ technique…that is letting him wanting for the ‘payment’ of his service of the day but i pretended that i needed that money to spend on our dinner for that night although it was enough to pay for his services as i counted my money in front of him to let him know how much i have.
Immediately, his face color changes and he demanded me to pay him which i told him that i would pay him the next day during our subsequence trip to Boon Ma Barramundi Farm which is also using his guide/services.
He scolded me and he told me if i do not pay him, he suggested to me not to use his fishing services. I taught to myself, this was the gratification i got for helping him to promote his fishing guide business and i told him that i will pay his fishing service fees on the spot. Finally, i saw the true colour of John Ang(BKKGUY) and the first thing i did went i reach home was to delete all i’ve wrote to promote him and his services. Hence i told him not to use any of my paid trip photograph for his advertisement purposes because i spent RM16,000(Sixteen Thousand Ringgit Malaysia) during my stay at Bangkok, fishing using his service. As a paying customer, i believe i have the right to demand this little request.
For those who want to experience his ugly side, all you need to do is to use his fishing guide for a few times and you would know for yourself.

Enough said about this fella, let me bring you to my next subject. That is, fishing in Malaysia…a place that’s not too far from KL…only about 2 hours drive and you can fly fish for TARPON, SIAKAP and ahem…SENANGIN…[:D]

Lure casting for siakap(barramundi), senangin(threadfin salmon) and tarpon(ikan bulan) at Bagan Datoh, Perak with Ron Fadzly, Pache Sir was definitely a fun fishing trip. It was one of my most painful fishing trip too because one of the triple hook on a popper hooked onto my finger.

Anyway, we caught lots of tarpons using poppers, spinners and shallow diver hardbody and soft plastic lures. One of the most enjoyable things about fishing is that, as a fisherman, you are pitting your skills against nature. You might think you’re pretty smart, but a tarpon, siakap and senangin may decide you’re more of a fool. So, if you can win the battle of wits, it makes you feel more alive and satisfied for having tricked a fish into biting.

Popper lures are made of wood or plastic and are designed for casting but can also be trolled. They are used successfully when targeting surface Predatory fish, in this case Bagan Datoh Tarpon and Senangin(Threadfin Salmon) They should be retrieved very fast, so that they splash on the surface, which makes them irresistible for Tarpons and other surface predators.

Bagan Datoh Threadfin Salmon(Senangin) caught on poppers…

In Bagan Datoh, fishing with poppers, spinners or hardbody and soft plastic lures are a fine way to catch fish, but fishing with lures requires the ability to make a lures come alive and look real to a fish(or injured fish). This can be a bit more difficult than it seems because the biggest skill required in this type of fishing is patience….lots of patience and endurance. ..[:D]

Active tails feature a tail on the lure that has a built in action when retrieved. This makes them ideal for anglers because you can simply retrieve the lure and the tail will create an enticing action. A good trick when fishing with soft plastics is to let the lure swim slowly beside boats, or in the shallows and seabed. To make sure it is swimming correctly and to see how quickly you need to twitch, hop or retrieve the lure to make it look enticing in the water. This is how i caught this 2kg siakap(barramundi) at Bagan Datoh, Perak.

..and for Jigging jungkies…let’s go to Sarawak…BINTULU…!!!

Jigging in Bintulu, Sarawak requires lots of stamina and endurance. It’s not for the soft hearted anglers. Jigging in the South China Sea waters with waves ranging from 2M-3M is no fun especially for anglers that will get sea-sick easily. This is what we encounter on this voyage, high waves and strong wind with rain on a fiber speed boat. We was caught in a storm at 4am with strong wind. The speed boat was roofless and we got nowhere to shelter. All of us on board the boat endures the coldness of the blowing winds in our soaked attires without raincoats whatsover. The rain poured on us for a good 3 hours but we survived. Once the rain stopped, we started jigging again…that’s the spirit of Bintulu Jiggers…!!!

The moment the storm resided and the rain stopped, we resume fishing again…

Most anglers believe that they know all about jigs. But, that’s just not so. Jigging basics may seem simple enough and mastering the fundamental of jigging technique can mean the difference between catching fish and not. Thanks to Edel(Seadel Tuna) our Jigging Sifu from Bintulu for showing us the correct technique to jig at Bintulu waters. He taught us to visualize our jigs(Horizontal Jigging Style). He told us to imagine where our jigs is in the water and what it looks like to the fish we are targeting. He told us jigging at different level will get different fish and true enough, we managed to get different fish at different level.

Trevally at Horizontal Mid Water Jigging…using the Seahawk ‘Big Strike’ Tournament Grade Metal Jigs…

Groupers and Snappers at Horizontal Bottom Level Jigging…

The Seahawk ‘Big Strike’ Tournament Grade Metal Jigs are very effective, esp at Bintulu waters…

This Seahawk ‘Big Strike’ Jig can be bend into a ‘S’ shape like the red eye sardine jig…

Thanks to TCE Sport for letting me and my fishing kakis to test the new Daiwa jigging rod, Daiwa Saltist Hyperjig series at Bintulu(20/3/2010). This jigging rod has good lifting power with good backbone support. It’s light and has good parabolic action. Daiwa Saltist Hyperjig series comes in 3 categories, PE1-3, PE3-6 and PE4-8. This rod has the ability to moves jigs effectively in high speed hence allowing me to jig horizontally using the Japanese style jigging method. We managed to land lots of good size coral fishes like groupers, snappers, sweetlips etc. We also managed to land a few tenggiri ranging from 6-8kgs with this rod.

As with any type of fishing, there is never one rod that will suit all occasions. The PE1-3 Daiwa Saltist Hyperjig suits best with metal jigs ranging from 60grams to 150grams while the PE3-6 best for jigs that weight more than 150grams and the PE4-6 is best for heavier jigs.

I shall conclude that Daiwa Saltist Hyperjig is a good jigging rod. I like the PE1-3 rating best as i seldom uses jigs that is heavier than 150grams. I was able to move my jig effectively underwater with this rod to land some of the finest fish from Bintulu, Sarawak.

…and for those who keep on calling me asking me to recommend them a Thailand Fishing Guide…here’s a list of them for you to choose from…

  1. Siam Fishing Tour :- Fishing in Thailand can require many methods and techniques, that will be unfamiliar to the western angler, consequently to get the best results from fishing in Thailand it is best to use the services of a local guide wherever possible. Fishing in Thailand freshwaters with expert fishing guides means you will maximize your results every time you fish. Fish alone to save a few baht and you run the risk of wasting the cost of your day ticket and bait, or worst still hooking into the fish of lifetime and not knowing what to do as it strips 200mtrs of line off your spool! If you’ve only ever fished Bungsamran for example on your own, but caught say 4 or 5 50LB or 20kg Mekong Catfish and thought you had a good day, think again! We look to secure 25 to 40 fish in a full days fishing (if our guests have the stamina!), and regularly take a Catfish over 50kg for our guests.

Siam Fishing Tours can be contacted easily by phone by first dialling
0844 566 43 43, from a UK landline, and then dialling our Thai numbers 006689 4582612 or 0066 867826545 calls are then charged at 5p per minute.

  1. Fishing Adventure Thailand :- Like you, I love fishing. But perhaps ‘love’ is not strong enough, because fishing became a passionate necessity in my life. I gain immense pleasure in the peaceful and calm harmony with nature; in the infinite quest to learn more about the habits of our friends – the fishes; and in the personal challenge of the pursuit of ever bigger specimens.
Every angler has his own philosophy, his own conceptions, his own style , his own skills and his own experiences. Mine led me to discover Thai fish 22 years ago and I had to be aware that much of my European angling knowledge did not always help me. My results were mixed and often unexpected. Being naturally curious and an avid perfectionist, I knew that observation was the best way to learn.
Through fishing trips with local Thai anglers; conversations with them over many long days and nights; listening to lectures and applying all that to personal experimentation, I learned and perfected an entirely different way to fish. A way that I delight in sharing with expatriate residents in Thailand or with visitor to Thailand from a variety of countries. I could not resist proposing the pleasure of a fishing trip. And gradually, more and more friends suggested that I turn my passion into an occupation.
I thought about that – a lot. The Thai fishing press drove the hook in deeper by writing a number of articles about my fishing successes. It was time to take the next step and the result was the formation of ‘Fishing Adventures’ as a tour agency dedicated to fishing.
We are the only guided fishing trip agency offering a menu of program options to meet the desires of the individual angler. Our ultimate goal is to help enthusiasts discover the rich diversity of South East Asian fish species – and to catch as many as possible – while having some truly unforgettable adventures along the way.
The success of any memorable guided fishing trip depends upon the professionalism of the organizers, upon their knowledge of the territory and – most of all – upon the fishing expertise of the guide. Our team of specialists provide all that professionalism, knowledge and expertise.
Whether you’re a beginner or seasoned angler ; whether you look to fish alone, with family, friends or companions; whether your budget is modest or generous; our team will help you forget – in just one day – the constraints and pressures of your hectic working life.
‘Fishing Adventures’ is a truly unique fishing tour agency in Thailand, offering daily or weekly programs that are adventurous but still offer the relaxed spirit of a holiday.”
