I saw a few sets at Kepong tackle going for about RM 400.
Can’t say much about the performance yet. Gonna go test it out later. hehehe.
Delan, the standard cog gear cannot upgrade with BB. U need to order a new one from Japan Tackle. The Cog gear 5152 is held in place by an E clip, just use a small flat head screw driver and push it out. The gear can then come out. But unfortunately, the original one got no space for BB.
The upgrade cog gear from Japan Tackle with the BB insert on the left. Original cog gear on the right. Note that the original is one solid piece and have no place for BB.
Wow those are some of the most insanely priced fishing product i’ve seen hehehe…
I mean not the whole handle, but the knob… usually i see the knob is sometimes with only a single knob and other times is the square knob… mine is 1600 so it comes with the same knob tat u have. Actually apart from the releasing knob while mine is a thumb bar mine is just like your original ones
Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you
Tan, ABU rules … LOL. I had the 1600C once, gave it away. The 1600 sure is a nice one.
Ok, from the tuning parts I put in, the reel can cast, can say about 50% distance gain. Today, it beats me, sure can get distance, but the reel is super hard to control. Char bee hoon like mad. I only put in one brake. Should had put in two. Anyhow, the performance is good.
Also, EZ braid kinda suck, maybe its my skill, but maybe my skill also sucks, a bit of shock from bird nest, the line breaks. And its super slippery, hard to tie.
For the price I paid in total, US$140 incl shipping, I think its worth it. But overall, for that kind of money, ABU2500 + US$140 for the tuning parts, might as will go grab the Alphas Type R. LOL.
Overall, the main improvement came from the new spool. The ‘feel’ of the new 5152 cog gear over the original one is negligable. This is from a ‘spin’ test with just the cog gear installed. Can’t detect any difference in the ‘freeness’ of the new bb cog.
And adding a BB to the level wind, that can be easily done if you can souce for a similar sized bearing as the white plastic part of the level wind. And i don’t think the bearing in the level wind helped much.

Thank you for the tips. But have to think again since you said the different is not that much. I once replace a plastic bush into the levelwind shaft with bearing but did not feel any different on my C3 reel. But i feel a smoothness when retriving my reel after i did some tuning especially when using big/heavy lure.
Just an update. The spool distorted last week, more like collapsed on one side. It happened when I was respolling it with 6lb mono, sufix Ultraknot. Probably applied to much tension while spooling. I fishing this exclusively with 10lb braid before.
So, if anyone else got this, becareful while spooling it up with mono.
now I’m contemplating if I want to order another replacement.
as expected .. my fren had the same problem because the parts were not fit properly. the spool pin kept knocking on the pinion gear. send it to the tackle shop to get it rectified, so it eliminates the knocking. first time i’ve heard a distortion happening.
other than that.. the reel is sweet man. i m leaving mine stock except for handle upgrade, while my frens 1601CIAR and 2601CIAR are fully tuned to the max. running on mags. but i prefer centrifugal because the oldfashion sound turns me on. ori spool good for 14-20g lures. slow cracking and spinnerbait for haruan
yeah, there was an inexplicable clicking when used with the avail spool. At first, I tot its was the anti reverse bearing dying, but it wasn’t. Used with the original spool, no sound. Its back with the original spool, but some how, the feel of the shallow avail spool is not there, not a very finese reel anymore. My scorpion now out performs it easily. … …
[:D] [:D] [:D] good news. Just received an email from Japan Tackle that Avail has decided to send a replacement spool FOC after I sent back the damaged spool to Japan Tackle on their request three weeks ago. Looking to receive it next week. [:D] [:D] [:D]

good to hear that. At least one guy i know who is in the midst of ordering avail shallow spool will now do so with peace of mind [:D]

by the way, if spooling line with high tension also can distort the avail spool, what’s your take on fighting the bigger fish? any experience?
fishing wise, so far, I’ve only used it at FV. Biggest and baddest fish caught was a big keli, probably between 4-5kgs. no problem.
i was quite surprised when the spool distorted when I was spooling it with 6lb sufix. I think that line probably put too much ‘post spooling’ tension on the poor spool. U know how mono lines then to grip tighter and tighter when spooling up. Never had a problem with 8 and 10lb braid. And futher more, the drag power on the reel isnt very high, I think 2lb max at the spool, cause I didn’t upgrade the drag washers (hard to find matching thickness).
So far, as big fish go, that reel with the shallow spool already kena spooled twice at FV, probably by some pacu. No problem with one giant keli and quite a number of rohus. Nice reel. I paired with either a custom EA 6-17lb rod or a 8-16 hornet. Both cast light lures quite well.

for thicker drag washers, you may want to try to get those washer meant for overhead salt reels (saltiga, saltist, talica and etc) and cut into size that fits your Abu. Just a suggestion.
why so difficult… just go purefishing and ask for their new carbon fibre drag disk la, if not mistaken called carbon matrix or something… much cheaper and can find the right size meant for the reel some more
but stock got or not another matter, i suggest you email purefishing the details first
I only have 13 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!
