Brooding PB

Hi there

My first fishing report here. Hope you all enjoy it.

Went for a morning session of luring with my friend on my birthday, targetting toman. Woke up at 4.45 am so that we would reach the spot before the sun rises. On our way there, my friend realised that he had mistakenly packed the top section of his spinning and the bottom section of his casting rod! Must have been the ungodly hours we woke up at, causing the blurness when packing. Oh well, it was too late to turn back so we decided to proceed in order not to miss the early “breakfast” session.

Reached our first swim before 7am after a short walk from our vehicle. It was a shallow cove of about 1-3 feet in depth with submerged vegetation patches, with slightly murkish water. Cool crisp air, evergreen vegetation and calm inviting waters greeted us. What a sight for sore eyes that have been glued to the computer screen for the whole week. As my friend could not fish due to his mismatched tackle, i was the designated angler that day.

Tied on a storm chugbug and set my bc cast control so i would not need to eat bihun that morning. Actually, i don’t usually use topwater as i’ve never hit anything on these lures before. Not expecting much, the chugbug flew gracefully over the quiet cove. First cast, nothing. 2nd cast, nothing. 3rd cast. Lobbed the chugbug close to the opposite side of the cove. Chug, chug chug…BAM. Something came from beneath and thrashed the lure. Strike and wth..the line was limp after the initial connection. Reeled in to find my lure was not attached anymore. Must have been my poor knot skills, causing me another fish . argh !@#$$%^ … Later i realised my lure was still floating there in the water. Thanked my lucky stars. Tied on another floating lure and caught my chugbug back. Tried the swim for a few more casts, but all the fish must have been spooked.

Proceeded to the next spot. By then, my spirits and hopes were high. It’s my birthday anyway, should be able to hit something. As we reached, we spotted a pod of fries. Toman babies, i thought. But retrospectively, it was a rather small pod of small fries, and did not have the red coloration. Anyway, mu chugbug flew over the pod and i slwly twitched n chugged it right into the fry ball. Whamm, something came from beneath and whacked it hard just a few feet away from where i stood. Instinctively,I struck & set the hook. Fish on. Struck it another time as i still thought it was a toman initially. The hard jaws, you know. Rod arched nicely and the fish made a few short bursts here and there. Strange, did not fight like a toman at all. Then we saw it. It was a PB! After another few short surges which stripped some line, it was coaxed to the banks for photo taking. Gripped and weighed to be about 4.4lbs or 2kgs. Totally exhilirating experience. First ever fish on topwater. First ever big PB. First opening ceremony for my new tackle set-up. [:D] Perfect birthday gift!

A near perfect short and nice report, minus the fishing spot where you caught the Temensis.

haha

It’s not in M’sia, somewhere down south across the causeway [;)] Heard the buggers at this place have reached 4 kgs, though have not seen any pics. Don’t think there are any Temensis in M’sia, as far as i know. But of course i might be wrong…

Actually haven’t caught any big monuculus yet. Still waiting for my chance when i go back to Ipoh to go try AK.

TJS bro,
I’m not a aquatic zoologist. but my personal theory is that all things living evolve and can adapt to the constantly changing environment and interaction from other species. The least threat (so to speak) that our local species have to worry about is foreign species (predetor or non-predetor). The biggest threat that our local species face is the destruction caused by mankind. Read somewhere which said that Temensis is less a threat than the butterfly pavon, whether this is true or not remains a question [;)] the Temensis is certainly and definately one of the best freshwater game fish on this planet!

Totally agree with you that the biggest threat to any fish is humans! One thing i noticed is that in Singapore, the fishes tend to be able to grow bigger easily due to the tight enforcement of no fishing areas as well as the lack of the numerous tajuls, cast-netters, spear-fishers, bubu layers, commercial fishermen, gill netters which are ever present all over the fishing spots in M’sia. In M’sia, anything and everything with fins is almost always guaranteed to be wiped out sooner or later due to the rampant commercial harvesting and poor regulations.

Singapore is a FINE city, never failed to live up to it’s name. You get fined for everything, so not much ppl try funny stuff like the rampant netting you see in M’sia. Too costly

not only in S’pore. most developed countries have got very good fish stock, even in the cities! Here where i fish, I can even catch record size Perch from the canal just 5 mins walk from town. Let face the facts, i’m sad to say that we are very much a 3rd world country [:(]
