I arrived in Kl on the 23rd of May to Join Lucky samurai for a Pekan fishing trip.
First of all we did an equipment top up at Sea Tackle and Kepong. Then it is off to Pekan. Arrived late at night and after a quick dinner rigged up ready for the next day.
This trip I again was introduced to another forumer - notably was Fir3 Tig3r.
The others weren’t MFN members but fishos nevertheless.
The next day we set out after a hearty breakfast of nasi lemak and half boiled egg.
The conditions that morning was excellent Little wind and calm seas. Fishing reports ffrom previous days were varied. Mainly little catch, some squid and that was it. Later I learned that a group a day before us caught 200+ fishes albeit smaller ones.
We took 2 boats - one to focus on trolling and the other bottom fishing, altough all of us were prepared for all types of fishing. We were also armed with some fresh live prawns.
Beatiful morning

Flat sea

Then we loaded and off we went. First stop was to catch bait fish. All plans (trollong first) were cast aside as the skipper suggested jigging first.
After the bait fish we went straight to the jigging spot and there was a lot of surface activity but they ignored our lures.
Sofia developed her own style of jigging and within the first 5 minutes she had a huge hit. Whatever it was it was angry and strong. The PE 3 rod was loaded to the max and almost yanked out of her hands.
She quickly passed the rod to me (hehehe you should see the smile on my face). After a good struggle we saw ‘silver’ in the water. Skipper called ebek and when finally brought up - was a sizeable ebek. Wow “my” (our) first Diamond Trevally.

After that all on board (5 of us to the boat plus skipper) went frantic on jigging. No results though.
There were still a lot of surface activity around us but no artificial lures worked, so the skipper changed to live bait, live prawns.
After about half an hour of switching between live prawns and live fish, something big attacked the skipper’s prawn. His light rod bent and line went peeling of his 2000 size reel. With skillful rod and reel work he finally brought a good sizes golden trevally to the boat

Suddenly there was a rush for live prawn bait. unfortunately we ended up with mainly Todak - I had 5 and I believe Kim and Chris had one or two each. Other boats came by and reported no catch at all. Later Kim and Chris caught a sari each
After a while of little action we went trolling without success. The skipper then recommended bottom fishing for Angchor (don’t know if right spelling.
We changed spot and went for bottom baiting and unweighted live bait as well. Before we started fishing we had 2 baitfish 9about 4 inches long) actually jump into the boat - interesting - obviously being chased by bigger fish?
Sofia was bored and wanted to do some apollo jigging. The skipper set up her Apollo jig and tested it before handing to sofia. On the first drop there was a hook up and as he was reeling in the baitfish a school of big barracuda was chasing the baitfish right up to the boat. The skipper teased the barracuda by lifting it above the water. It wanted it’s meal so badly that it jumped and took half the baitfish in one bite. now we know why the baitfish were jumping into the boat.
Ken - a newbie with us had a huge bite (ANGCHOR??). His rod was so loaded that he couldn’t lif or crank it. There was a chorus of “pump, pump, pump” to encourage him but he unfortunate lost it to a snag.
I quickly chucked in my life prawn bait and within minuted had a huge take. after a good fight landed this

well that wasn’t the end of it for the barracuda had it’s revenge - managed to slice me on the legs (luckily didn’t bite it off)

just as I got the barracuda to the boat my bottom fishing rod went - huge angchor? I was pumping it up when the line got tangled with my barracuda outfit line. The fish got away while I was trying to untangle the lines.
The barracuda school disappeared and we continue fishing for angchor and I had my unweighted live bait in the water as well. Suddenly another big bite with huge runs. Finally up comes this

Carry a rod and speak softly.
