hi eugene,

Either 5 or 6 wt would be ok to start with.

As a rule of thumb, if you start with 5 wt, then you can expand your equipment by adding a 3wt and 7wt later on.

If you start with 6wt, then you can add a 4 wt and an 8wt later on.

If you are the competitive type, then go for a 5wt set up as a lot of casting competitions use 5wt as the regulation rod weight.

I would also recommend starting off with a good line like a Scientific Angler Redfish line which has a lot of feel to it and is easy to cast.

For reels, as long as you are not going to be doing any extreme fly fishing to catch fast running fish such as bonefish or sailfish, then any reel will do. However if you need something really reliable, go for an Abel reel.

As for rods, this is your most important part of your fly fishing set up. So buy the most expensive that you can afford but do remember to try it first before buying it.
If you are on a budget, then a TFO Professional is a good rod to start with. If you print money, then a Sage Z Axis or a Winston Boron IIx are the best rods to blow away almost RM2.5K but they are well worth your money and are easy to cast with.

However, do stay away from expert or speciality rods which have extra fast actions as these rods are difficult to load and are more difficult to cast in the hands of a newbie.

You could just go to tacklebox in Subang and talk to Nick who will give you very good and honest advice and recommend you something to suit your budget.

You can lead a horse to water…but you can’t make it drink. [:D] [:p]

And not everyone can afford an Abel ok? [:p]

Any idea how much is sage launch outfit cost? Really interested to get that. Heard a lot of good things about sage but their higher end rods are over my budget by a mile. Still currently trying to get the best out of my little budget here ahaha.

Any suggestions for a budget of RM 500 comfortable to RM 1500?

Tangyp : You were the one who made me buy the Winston IIx 6wt rod. And I did not buy an Abel but a Lamson Litespeed reel.

Eugene : Watch out for Tangyp! He’s the one who collaborated with Nick to make me spend more than 4 times my budget.

Hi Eugene,

You have to ask yourself these question; am I going to take this sport seriously for the rest of my life or I just want to explore this sport and let see if I like it or not.

If you just want to explore the sport, buying a premium fly tackle is ‘not’ a good idea. If you don’t like the sport, you end up with expensive equipment that you don’t use very often. But if you 100% sure that you are going to take the sport seriously, premium fly tackle is not a bad option.

One thing you have to remember, ‘the man behind the rod the one that catching a fish not the tackle’.

I only can talk from my own experience, my first fly rod was Daiwa Heartland. You may call this a budget fly rod, but I used it for more than a year or so until I’m convinced that I’m going to take the sport seriously before I bought so called ‘premium fly tackle’.
I have met few people that own many very expensive gear but never fish nor catching fishes.

I would strongly suggest that you go to “Berbuka puasa bersama at Empangan Air Kuning”, I think is on the 5 or 6 Sept. Contact Nik from EAK to find out more. I’m sure there would be plenty of fly rod reel and meet fellow FFman for an advice. Hopefully they will let you to have a flick with the rod

Orangminyak suggestion is excellent, I probably would go for the 5 wt. It is a versatile rod for a beginner.

There are many quality fly tackle with a very reasonable price that you can look at.

Hi Eugine,

It’s not an easy question to answer. It depends a lot on what spieces you want to fish for. I learn my first casting at age 15 on a heavy 7 weight splitcane rod with silk line from my dad that was in a terrible condition as well. To be honest it was a real disaster because all the materials were old, damaged and not really fitting very well. When I got a cheap 5 weight (glass fibre in those days)it was getting a lot better but I still had to learn everything, without any help and there were hardly any books available when I was young in my part of Holland. I was lucky some nice Norwegion young ladies were helping me a little in my early days.

In our country things are a lot easier, the distances are not that far and it is easy to visit a fly fishing club (we have almost 50) where everybody will help you to test a rod that fits you the best. Perhaps somebody in the forum will live close to you and can show you and help you to do a few casts first before buying anything right away. In our country, usual some of the older guys let you borrow a rod for a few weeks to try first before somebody will go with you to buy your first real rod. That’s how we usual do it and what I advice starters in Europe.

Anyway, if you still and absolutely want to buy a fly rod, go for the 5 weight if you want to fish for small fish and little rivers or streams. (perhaps even a weight 4) If you want to fish still waters and bigger fish or stronger fish like carp go for the 6 weight.

If you never fly fished before buy a cheap rod and reel first and have a look for the real big brands when you absolutely sure that you will get a passionate fly fisher. I have seen too many people that quit after a few weeks

I like this idea… Eugine, I have a 6wt P.Amin rod ( mid fast… will be easy for beginner )with a sage 1800 reel loaded with lines which I hardly use now… you may wanna try casting with it for 1-2 weeks before make up your mind…

Let me know…

Guess that’s one of the reason why you didnt quit :stuck_out_tongue:

read my bio then you know the real story [:D]

Hans

Hey guys. Thanks for all the advice!

HvK: I think this hobby will be with me for a long time. I don’t mind spending a few quid to get a decent gear…anyway it’ll be with me for quite some time.

Dron: Thanks for the offer mate. I wouldn’t feel as nice as flicking my own rod. lol that didnt sound right. but anyway i wouldnt want to break your rod, it’ll leave me feeling guilty and probably ruin a friendship along the way. Thanks again. But what i think you could do is teach me how to tie flies ahahhaahahhah yaarrr that would probably do it! Your flies are really nice!

My bling bling reel will be here soon Wheeeeeee. Got it off ebay with a decent discounted price. Time to get a rod from nick.
