Hi Sean,

Surfcasting is land based fishing and giant grouper form the beach is not heard of nowadays, if you’re talking about the giant groupers which are easily found in deep sea that is.

Land based fishing groupers are normally done on the rocks where the water is naturally deep and also estuaries. Most successful baits are live ones, possible to use lures but problem is the spots are very rare and remote due to rapid development.

Groupers weighing 2kg caught from the beach is considered a trophy nowadays…he he.

Hi Lee,
I’m new member from Penang.
Ideal bait for Grouper on rock beach be live bait, some sinking Lure on mangrove area.
Not ideal fish on Surf as It’s like structur(coral/rock/sinking boat).
Hear my friend get 3kg once on rock area(pantai Kerancut at nite) surf but most time 60lbs leader line be cut by roack/coral.
Never hear of giant grouper(more than 10kg) been catch by Surf casting fishermen.

May be U can get more by other member,

Not really,

Giant grouper caught from the land recorded 286 kati (171.6 kg) in Taiwan. by long line fishing.

I believe if we can find the spot deeper than 10 M near the rock in Malaysia coast line, there is a chance to catch 20+kg grouper. In Langkawi I had experienced a big bite and destroy my 30lb tackle near the rock, and I suspect it is at least a 10 kg+ grouper too

Knowing your project to team-up an landbase Surfcaster to target giant grouper in Malaysia islands.
North Langkawi and westcoast Pangkor island may produce something, as westcoast penisular malaysia have been over fishing too much!
Like to join but the cost are too high and I’m stay&work in Penang not KL-loh[V][V].
As beginner on surf fishing, I would like to stay on the target at 3kg of grouper will be good for me now[:I][:I].
Do share with us on the giant grouper(above 10kg) catch in malaysia sea.
