Good Light Rod (between 5-6 feet long) < RM100?

Hi guys,

Been following this forum but never posted so this is my virgin post. My dad bought a cheap reel the other day and I am now looking for a rod to match it. The reel is rather small and I saw on the bottom of the reel, the max the reel can support is 6lbs line so I thought a light 6 foot rod can match it.

Any suggestion on light rod less than RM100?

if you are looking for light 6lbs-10lbs rod…digital aquarium puchong have selling 1 piece berkley rod for rm50++…eupro rods are worth the money and quite cheap about rm60-120…the also have old stock ugly stick which about rm80++..where you’re from sir..
the main question would be what kinda of fishing you want to do…

Hi RK,

Freshwater, wild + paypond. Occasionally at Glenmarie Cove - the big sungai there.
I am going to the shop in Kuchai Lama there, wonder if they have this berkley rod you wee saying…

mrkenjiro,

Would be helpful if you could post photos of this reel. For me, I always buy reel & rod 2gether. The two must match well in terms of weight & balancing. If you say max is only, 6lb, I believe it is meant for prawn & very small fish. Not practical for much of anything else. You could spool it with stronger line like 10 to 12lb but it will render the reel less than effective.

Hennesy

Hi Hennesy, sorry I don’t have the reel with me now. The reel is definitely for UL or L tackle only. My dad bought it from from expo. The bottom of the reel only have 3 reading - 3lb, 4lb and 6lb. Probably can use up to 10lb but like what you said, it might make it less effective. I just need a rod to pair with it. Was thinking like 10lb of line + 6 foot of rod (maybe slight less than that)

hmmm…i think the reel is either 500 or 1000 series..any names? Henessy is correct.I would say berkley cherry wood would be something you can consider..

mrkenjiro,

Personally, I would advice a rod no more than 5ft or 5.6ft at most. Can consider those light graphite rods. You could make this as a light finesse jigging rod for fishing at streams, small ponds, lake banks & padi fields where it is not deep & you don’t need to cast far.

sorry guys,
errrrrrrkkkkkk…excuse me,may i step in a bit…
you can’t go wrong with a FINNOR reels…but for ultralight..
the best is always a SHIMANO…try to find the 1500 size..
for the rods…i recommend you a WORKHORSE…ABU GARCIA..
if you can find them cause they’re no longer in production…
for me i’ve bought the CHERRYWOOD 4-12lb..1500 Line Winder reel
4-12lb EAGLE GT…Fenwick…and 1-6lb WORKHORSE…been hookin
fish up to 3kgs…nothing bigger than that so far..
lucky that no fish above that did take my offer…the only rod
that have not being tested by fish is the WORKHORSE…which is paired
with an aerlex 1000… a shimano reel with abu garcia conolon 6lb line…

ultralights are going to the finest now…the good news for you is that
if you cannot find any rods mentioned here you can ask any shop to bring them
in for you…thou it may take a long time…i think it’ll worth the
wait…

sorry for being such a disturbance to anybody here…i’m not anything you
that you like thou…not something you hate either…

" berkley cherry wood " - that is a good recommendation for the budget that you have set.

Don’t worry about performance - my kaki has been using 2 x 51/2 ft.( older models ) for years with 8 - 10 lb braids and regularly pulls up 2 - 3 kg pay pond siakaps.

The largest that I have witnessed him pulling up was a 9 kg patin from Uncle Chow’s pond ( no longer in business ) but it took him about 30 minutes.

Thanks guys for the input. I bought a berkley cherry wood for 80 bucks. So far so good.

hehe..owsome…

wanna see how the 5.5’ and 6’ feels in my hands [:p]

Which shop sells those? I want to test them with my own hands. And I like stiff/hard tips. Meaning ultralight action tips.
