Jigging Rod and Reel

Dear All Passion Jigger,

I wish get all of your opinions, I m new into jigging as all years I m bottom guy. I come from Sandakan, Sabah where jigging is not famous. Recently, I brought 2 sets of jigging set but I found it not really comfortable to use with. I hope I can get your opinions what type of rod and reel is most suitable. Here are the details of my equipments.

Set 1
Daiwa FreamJ 4500 40bls Braid Line combine with Lemax StormFire PE 2-5
Set 2
Ryobi Zauber 3000 20bls Braid Line combine with Lemax StormFire PE 1-3

Thanks…

hi eddie, this is coming from a newbie and its not an advice but me sharing some toughts that u might wanna consider…i think i understand the 'uncomfortable state u r refering to.. i too had some diff adjusting…from the rods to the reels…but my solution came in the form of custom rods had to make 3 before i found one i really ‘jigged’ with haha!!..reels its just depending on yr budget have a good one buy something thats gonna take the punishment well…but otherwise refer back to those u fish with, this is important as they know u better, seen u fish and can give u better advice,in my case my buds let me use their set-ups to test out on my outings with them. Thats how i figured which set-up was the most suitable for me…i think im into med/heavy coz the lightest jig i have is 200gms so it was very important for me to know which kind rod and reel is gonna help to sustain the torture i’d be facing haha!! to last a whole day that is.. in short wat im saying is.. end of the day it should suit yr style comfort and needs…i hope this helps..enjoy..

Thanks Marsh and krazie,

i m having the problems with the tempo of jigging… when i jig too fast then i lost the balance and when i jig too slow, the rod seem to be have a funny reaction… this due to the equipment or it is style of jig ?

Bro,

How long have you been jigging? At first everybody will have the same problem. As the time goes by, you’ll get used to it. Just don’t give up. No matter if the fish is biting or not. Just take it as a practise to get the tempo. As you mentioned, not many people around us do the jigging. They will give you a funny looking when you do the practise. Ignore them cause when you bring up a fish with the piece of metal, they can’t stop asking you questions. [:D]

i totally agree bro bwan…i suppose u need to be with the right people…i have my good friend che wan who is my ‘jiggin’ sifu (still think he has the best jiggin rythm of the whole lot!!!)…when i jig with him i follow his tempo..and it worked for me…at first it felt very funny always losing the beat or so to say..but dont give up! now it aint that funny anymore and i think i’ve found the right balance/style for me,…but as with everything practice always helps…u must go on a few outings with serious jiggers..there are so many diff types of tempo/rythm/beats that u will c [:)]! and im sure u wud find one that is just right for u!! hope this helps…cheers

Bwan and Marsh, Thank for the encouragement…

I have been jigging for 4 fishing occasion ard… i did manage to jig some grouper and tenggiri… I ll try harder until i find my tempo… Sea fishing quite hard for me as I m working in Genting Highlands… as I only have 4 days off in every 26 days of working… I still need one more advise from you all… I ll be budgeting RM1000.00 for medium jigging equipment… Any recommendation ?

eddieraves@gmail.com

the tempo takes some getting used to…
i had the same problem initially… even now i have some problems… the best would be thru trial and error… vary ur jingging tempo bit by bit till u get the perfect feel to it…

different species of fish, different water types and weight of the jigs play an important aspect to getting the right tempo…

try asking the tekong or fello experienced fisho who are fishing with you for the right jigging speed…

example: when i am jigging around pulau sembilan area, the boatman wold recommend two types of jigging speed… fast retrieve will get u talang @ queenfish and not so fast retrieve will get u GT… so local knowledge is always helpful…

The main idea of jigging to use light but powerful equipment for maximum enjoyment when fighting big fish. For your budget, you FreamsJ good enough already. If you want to upgrade, Shimano Twinpower 8000PG will be around your budget but it's for the reel alone. Add about RM2XX and get Shino PE2-4 rod. That's the best budget rod I know so far. Never failed when fighting medium size amberjack in KK. The rod is light, powerful with full SiC guides. Yesterday asked the shop owner if anyone return a broken Shino rod cos I never heard anybody broke the rod. He said just once when one of his customer when to Spratlys and fight 39kg dogtooth with Shino PE2-4 rod.[:D][:D][:D]

Your intended setup looks fine to me for light jigging. Spool it with 20-30lb braided will be just perfect for small tenggiris, big eye trevally or baby GT. For heavier set up than that, the Shino Amberjack PE2-4 will be a very good choice. Full SiC CMNSG guides and good blank too, not to mention the free gifts. [:D] The price is cheaper than the customised Expert rod. But the Expert rod is good too for it's price.

I heard Xzoga is malaysian brand using Japan design, is it true? Is Shino local or imported?

Thanks for your reply. I’m keen to learn more about jigging, they say i’m poisoned, haha

No idea about the xzoga. You can ask their dealer, Uncle Thomas one of them if I am not mistaken. Shino is China product. As for the rods, the manufacturer is not that important. The blank is. As long as the blank made from carbon + graphite, it should be good for jigging for it's light weight but strong. As for the poisoned, we should believe in jigging. Forget your bait and go baitless all the way. [:D] I think that's the only way if we want to have good success in jigging. From my little experience many fishos bring along their fishing set up but it was put in the cabin or hanging on the rod holder while they do the usual bottom fishing. Only if they saw someone succesfully bring up the fish with the metal jig, they will suddenly change their set up. But after few strokes they'll give up again. [:D][:D][:D]

There are many Malaysian brands of rods and reels being sold in all the retail shops . Most rods are imported from China and Taiwan. XZOGA RODS AND COMPONENTS ARE OF JAPANESE ORIGIN, BUT assembled in Taiwan. Where the products come from is not important, the most important criteria is reliability and proven facts of the XZOGA RODS. Ranging from pe 1-3, 3-5, these two lighter range had already proven widely through out the country.
Here are some pictures of proven facts:

Thanks for the advise…

I heard that Shino rods are quite good especially for budget angler like us. I ll take your advise for it. How about Tica Taurus reel ? Is it good buy or the shimano twinpower ? My friend brought a Bio Master and he never use it… maybe i ll buy it from him…

Many people used Tica Taurus for jigging but to compare against Twinpower is too much as the Twinpower is definately better. Maybe the Taurus is about Shimano Navi. Biomaster is a good choice too. Still better than the Taurus.

Brother,

i think seatackle still has some twinpower 8000pg old stock going for RM 500..

give em a call

kill the friggin’ netters
