Dr. Ling has become Malaysia’s first CCI after he past the test with flying colours (written and practical test). Ling innitialy came to Australia to attend the Peter Hayes’s Australian Fly Fishing Conclave and observe some of the FFF CCI testing procedures. The FFF test event is conducted every year preceding the conclave. This year test event was attended by Bill Higashi MCI and FFF Casting Board of Governor from Japan, Peter Hayes MCI, Peter Morse MCI, Matt Howell MCI and Brian Henderson MCI, plus good numbers of CCI helping the candidates with mock practical test.
I picked him up from the airport and went straight to the testing venue at the Northern Suburbs Fly Fishing Club in Melbourne.
Ling had practical mock tests with Andrew Connell CCI on Thursday and Boyd Wilson CCI on Friday.
Lack of sleep on the flight down to Melbourne doesn’t seem to have bothered him.
After a little hesitation and a little bit of arm twisting, Peter Hayes and Andrew Connell convinced him that he is good enough to take the test. Ling reluctantly agreed to take the test. The mandatory Pre-test workshop that all the candidates must attend was conducted by Peter Hayes MCI and Brian Henderson MCI. To avoid conflict of interest the test must be completely unbiased, so Peter Hayes could not test Ling. Ling was tested by Peter Morse MCI and Matt Howell MCI. Peter Morse and Matt told me that they were very impressed with Ling’s standard of competency and subject knowledge. As matter of fact Ling was asked to performed a task that wasn’t on the test to find out how good he was.
Congratulation to Dr. Ling for his achievement.
I will post some photos when I get back from the conclave.
Yup. Congratualtions to Doc. Ling. Spoke to him just now; he is understandably excited, just as we are proud to have him as a Malaysian first. With his enthusiasm for the sport and friendly and helpful personality, it can only be for the good of flyfishing in Malaysia. Okay, teh tarek on me when we meet.[:D]
Here are some photos from the FFF certification test.

Oooy!! You were supposed to wait for the rest of us Doc?! Arm twisting, ya right!
Anyway, congratulations and well done sir. That bottle that I picked up from the airport duty free last night will come in handy for our celebrations!
It’s true Dennis, I did twist Lings arm, he also told me there are some very good Candidates in Malaysia. I wish you all well, maybe next year you might come for the Conclave?
Bintoro, Andrew, we are all very happy for Doc and come thursday night we’re gonna have a nice celebration for sure! What a milestone for fly fishing in Malaysia, hurrah! and I certainly do hope i get the opportunity to visit next year’s Conclave Andrew!
Hi guys,Wet and Bintoro,
Thanks for all the encouragement and the congratulatory messages.Really without the mock test things could have turn out differently. The Melbourne boys and the FFF have a great thing going on at their place, the regular practise. teaching newbies. CCIs mentoring potential CCIs. organising competitions and fishing trips. and i can tell you most of them do not get paid for it.just like the MCIs testing the CCIs.
We could get something like it going on here, we need to put aside our differences and prejudices to make it successful. I can honestly say that many of us here with a little bit of coaching will pass the CCI test.
Some of you will argue that they dont teach they dont need to do slack linepresentations etc.
What you will learn is an understanding of what makes a good cast, line
control, how to diagnose a bad cast and the remedy, how to cast in difficult situations and how to respect fellowmen and colleagues.
It is not about how far you can cast, how big or how many fishes you can catch.
Knowing you guys and seeing your cast if you practise and discuss the five essentials inside out you will breeze through, so how about it Zango, shahrul, rahman, rahiman, ben Choong and all the old cocks, you know who you are.
We will probably get Bill Higashi Japan FFF governor plus 2 MCIs to come down to test us depending on how many candidates we have.
Mee youeting at TACKLEBOX thu 7OCT at530pm, se
Well Done Doc,Rightfully so, that you are the first Malaysian to get the CCI.Since you were the one who got us all started in the first place. We at TACKLEBOX are very Proud of you. See you all on thursday

I think Nick says Celibate. How was your stomping in China after doc, tok mi (the Mexican amigo) and I left? Any fishing?
I know that you did not come down to sit your CCI in the first place but I am soo pleased that you had a crack at it.
For what it is worth you were in the top two candidates that we tested over the three days.
I really do hope that this is just the start for you guys in Malaysia and as I have said in the past I really do wish to help in any way that I can.
Just get the future candidates to concentrate on good tip control and smooth rod loading that produces smooth parallel loops. Then the words with confident delivery.
I said to a Master candidate recently that when the examiner asks you a question you should answer it so throughly, not leaving out any single point, such that he is left open mouthed without any opportunity to ask further questions on the topic. After a clear and concise answer you MUST leave him with nowhere further to go.
So, go to it Ling, train the other guys, and girls…Jobina, up to be CCi’s with you. Then move straight onto becoming a Master.
Cheers
Mr Peter
PS> After 3 days of testing and two days of Conclave we all had a happy ending !
