Materials advice wanted

I’ve been working here in KL for a few months now and have decided that it is time that I carved a few more lures.

Can anyone local to me (Bandar Sunway) advise me where I can buy some balsa, soft stainless steel wire, lead etc to get started again.

Many thanks.

The KL guys will be better equipped to answer you, mean while go thru the FAQ and other thread in this section, u might find some answers there.

Balsa wise, maybe it’s time u switch to Jelutong, THE local wood choice for lure making [;)]

Thanks Lapala. I’ve read all the posts, some interesting articles. I will check out the jelutong. I remember carving a piece of that stuff when I was a school boy, a couple of years ago!

I am really hoping that one of the KL boys is going to step up and help me out with some info on shops to buy my materials. Balsa and/or jelutong wood for now will be enough to get me going.

welcome Vodkaman,

jelutong wood - http://www.multifilla.com/
soft ss wire - most tackle shop has it (i prefer to use 18/20g hard ss wire)
lead - most tackle shop or electrical wiring supply shop (flat lead strips)

hope this helps

Mr Rap. Many thanks for the link. I’ve just read their infantry, very impressive, a one stop shop. Just what I was looking for.

Tell Mr Leong there James or Anthony from Alor Star sent you there, u either get special discount or gets chased out of the shop [:D][:D][:D]

Nice one. Things are looking up!

Here are the places i went to get these things

Jelutong wood - Art shop in Petaling street. Comes in photo frames 3rm per frame.
Sandpaper - hardware shop in lucky garden 50c
Weights - Split shots from tackle shop. hammered to fit
filing set - hardware shop in lucky garden
ss wire - got this one at ace hardware midvalley since i was there. 16rm (gasp)
spraypaint - hardware shop in lucky garden 6.50rm each
Araldite 5min n 90min epoxy - hardware shop in lucky garden 12rm each (i think)

Thanks Spook, for the info.

I will be out on the hunt for materials next Saturday, with my taxi driver (old friend for ten tears). I’m hoping to find lead sheet, possibly at a builders yard. It is used on rooves for water proofing. It is easy to cut and fold and hammer into shape. I really don’t want to get involved in melting the stuff at this stage as I am only making one-off’s for testing in my hydrodynamics testing lab (apartment swimming pool).

I’m going to be doing some mould and casting experiments with some ideas that I have, so hopefully, I will be able to report my findings back to you all in the not too distant future.

Thankyou for the help.

Man I pity your long suffering friend [:D][:D]

Excuse the typo, but you may well be right!

Can you imagine in this day of impersonal attitudes and poor service, a taxi driver that will run errands for you, pay your astro and electricity bills (with my money of course). imagine inviting your taxi driver to your office BBQ party. We have even sent him to three world cups as he is an avid football fan. This is a measure of the regard we hold for Mr Bob, the taxi driver! Real nice guy.

Sorry, two world cups, Japan and korea was one, France was the other.

Hmm is he on loan when i go to KL?

Special rate, just for you.

vodkaman,

its easier to get the flat lead strip from electrical cable supply shop.
1mm thick x 12mm width, comes in a coil of approx.70mm dia. for a cost of only RM2.00 - use them quiet a lot myself

Thank’s Fat Rap, I found the tape, perfect form, easy to work with. Unfortunately, the guy saw me comming and I paid considerably more than RM2. Still, I am just happy to get the materials. I have enough lead for about 50 baits. Next time I will be a little more alert at the counter! Tomorrow it is off to the craft shop to buy the bulk of the materials.

hi guys, can someone recommend a prefered type of knife for carving lures? what size and blade profile should it be? thanks.

Earth is NOT inherited from our ancestors BUT borrowed from our children!

Hi Evan,

i hv been using snap-blade cutter for shaping the lure blank
but get some good quality ones, both the blade and the knife
its worth the $$$ and safer too

The brand NT from Japan should be sufficient for the type of carving we do. Moreover, the NT cutter has a metal sleeve within the knife to prevent the blade from “cutting” into the knife.

Lapala is the main man for carving and hopefully he will jump in soon and give you some valuable advice.

Have you considered a set of fine chisels. If you are going to be cutting a lot of fine detail, chisels will give you more control. My brother is a sculptor, he only uses a knife for spreading jam on his toast.

If it is for a one off job, then the expense of chisels would exclude this option.
