Came across this article in the Sun newspaper at www.sun2surf.com/article.cfm?id=32813 … looks like the new Penang Govt. is coming up with some good policies, at least on paper for the moment.
Projects like this must be fully supported … if London can do it with the Thames, Singapore with her river, why not Penang with Sg. Pinang?..and why not with Sg. Klang?
But it take more than just physically cleaning up the rivers. Its the people who are the source of the pollution.
They need to be educated that the rivers are not the place to throw rubbish. They need to realise how important river systems are to the survival of the human kind.
I support the cleaning of all the rivers, streams, waterfalls and lakes. lets hope the effort become a success.
education and culture is important I can’t find any clear river in KL now… I just went to a public park that has a river in the middle and it’s full of trash and I clearly can see the source of the river has filter on it. People just careless and throw trash into river…
on last trip back to Taiwan, I was told by my admin lady that there is a summon for me.
It was a summon for littering, it came with a photo to show the car’s license plate and a hand at the driver’s seat dropping a cigarrette butt.
It was me. I can not deny because it was me borrowing and driving that company car on that particular day.
it costs me NT 1200 which is around 135 RM. later I knew from the police that the photo was taken by someone passing by and send to police. the police also told me that the guy who turn me in actually get half of panelty I paid as a bonus.
that is some expensive lesson to me. for littering a cigarrette butt.
Point is the system and people. to clean a river by city hall is tough job, and if ppl keep littering into Penang river, the river will never have the chance to clean.
