sinker

what is the most optimum weight (sinker) should i load onto the rod?..my current practice is using 80, 100 and 120g…and the longest measured is 110-115m (is it ok for a beginner like me to cast only that far [8)] …any comments?)

ZSparrow,

It not right for one to advise you what the optimum weight for your unless one know what type or model of the rod use.
My advise best you check what is the rating specify on the rod something like 100g-200g and best try with lowest weight shown then gradually increase until you yourself felt the rod response.

Another problem with this come from the rod itself, meaning the specification shown does not suit the rod e.g. specify weight rating 100g to 200g, sometime at 140g or 5oz it alredy compress habis.

Zam,

Rightly said by Onn, you have to be aware of your rod specifications and some brands may over rate their rods.

Generally, as a guide to follow sports casting rods are rated 4oz to 6oz (or 8oz).

Distance wise, 110m to 115m if on overhead thump cast is considered very good for a biginner, but for off-the-ground and pendulum cast, some beginner I know can cast 160m-170m in a short time…especially with Onn to coach, but you have to put ear plugs lah!!!

MSC

thnks bros for the advice…the rod that im having rite now is specified 200-300g…(is it considered overkill??)…yea,of course that one was purchased “a pig in a poke” prior to a beachfishing trip…and i believe i should get a better one.[:D]

broonn, in my case, should i first cast 200g?..i dont think i can even cast 100m with that load.

where can i get a tutorial for a better distance casting.? [:)]

thanks

ZSparrow,

From the rating mention, that not a surf rod but a telephone pole or what we call the beast hehehe.. Aji Aznaff got one, not body dare to test it accept No.1 hehehe.

Regarding the weight, my advice start with lighter one like 100g and for your info none of us cast with 200g before. Heaviest we have cast in the tournament is 150g,resulting complains like going to dislocating the shoulder and some asking for more handicaps just for 1 Can Drink…
For me the fundamental getting distance is more to the technique not the weight. Many cases I come across, majority belived that the heavier the sinker the further the distance and it is totally wrong.

If you are in KL, you are welcome to join us very weekend Saturday/Sunday (unless otherwise specified)will be at Bandar Sri Putra/Bkt.Mahkota, Bangi.

If you are free on the 28-Jan-07, we going to have our first Small Tourney for 2007 here. You can follow this under “Mahkota Challenge” thread.

BTW, what brand is the rod you have now???

Thnks bro…I wish I could join you this upcoming weekend but unfortunately…I am leaving for bandung this 28th…[:D]yippieeeeeee.

The “telephone pole” that I own now is…maguro surf rod 3.9m (if im not mistaken)…sound familiar or just a piece of “cikai” brand for surfcasters?..that rod is rather stiff (fast action)…and I almost had my shoulder disjointed during an attempt to do a so-called pendulum (without proper knowledge and practice…hehehe)…as a consequence, ballistic to the breaker at bullet speed (I dare not to imagine if it was accidentally launched 180° backward…to a bunch of people to be exact…die ma [xx(])…how lucky i was, thanks God.

When you see people pendulum it look very simple and easy, feel that you also can do the same. The fact it is the opposite, my advice always learn the fundamental like OTG with guidance of course from experience caster.
