It could simply be there are not enough fishes in that body of water you are fishing at? :-). Perhaps today, we may have more anglers than fishes? Food for thought :-)
Agree. More anglers, better techniques, better equipment means more & more pressure on fish stocks. While CnR & bag limit is commendable, for every fish released, 30 are taken home for consumption. Also, lacking gov support to actively re-populate & re-stock fishes in the wild.
Just to rouse you fellas a bit. Here’s the result of 3 months of casting at Subang Lakes. YES! I know! It’s a small Peacock Bass but it’s my 1st one. Also, the lure was a cheap RM 3.80 Bakau 5g Minnow purchased from TCE Tackles. I was going to throw away the lure as it wasn’t producing results but then I gave it one more try…just one more chance…& YES!!!
Bro Hennesy, dont look down on that cheap Bakau :-). It was catching tons of Sebaraus in Belum. Yep, most of the Sebaraus were released. All the fishes caught with this lure is about a kilo. Not bad if you ask me. It has a permanent place in my lure box

Don’t know about you guys, but my fishing experience, when it comes to lures, it is always the cheap ones which deliver results. RM 20 to 30++ Rapala, Storm, Ofmer & etc minnows has never worked for me. Either I loose them to snags or they perform so poorly, I put them away. I think with regards to lure fishing, keeping baits & lures as simple as possible is the best way to fish.
Same here - and it could be because I am more aggressive with my cheapos. I shudder every time I cast an expensive lure into the snags with the result that I am quite often yards away from where I should have been.
Coming back to " LUCK " - watch what happens in salt water pay ponds. You have a bunch of fishos clustered together, using the same live prawns and rigs, and quite often one of them out fishes all the others combined. Is this skill or what ?
As an example, was at Desa Aman on Thursday last and saw this happen again. One guy got 6, while his immediate neighbors / friends numbering 3 only got a total of 2 ! Luck or what ??? [xx(]
Expensive lures do have their place in my fishing :-). These lures are often fined tuned and their action is better in my observation, in enticing the fishes to bite.
I got hooked to buying some types of expensive lures particularly the Japanese made walk-the-dog type when I noticed that 2 anglers may be fishing the same spot and the angler using the expensive lure gets his lure repeatedly hammered while the cheaper lure was ignored. I believe it has something to do with the action of the lures.
That said, I do still cringed when using expensive lures coz I have made 2 casts using expensive lures while river fishing and both times they were stuck beyond recovery - and on the 1st cast on both occassions. Ouch! Out then with the el cheapos
Yes, Mike, I have noticed that there are some ‘cari-makan’ anglers in saltwater pay ponds that have fantastic results fishing in the same place as others who caught nothing. My observation tells me that it has to do a lot with skill and knowledge - the right placement of the bait in the right places. The difference between catching fish and going home empty handed may be just a couple of feet difference between the placement of the baits.
“Some days you are lucky, some days you are not. But in an angler’s life, the luck eventually evens out. Each one will have his share. What remains is your knowledge and skill, and wisdom of using the right tackle, baits and method.”
I think it was Francis Bacon but I’m not sure.
I guess the bottomline is, to get ready with the stuff (especially the stuff between your ears) when the Lady Luck comes a calling.
Weng: You are doing it right, my man!!! Why? Cos you are the keenest learner here, and that means the happiest!

Talk about bad luck. I finally broke the curse of my Columbia fishing shirt. Each time I wear that shirt, I will get pak kor for sure. Proven time & time again so much so I only wear it on recce trips. But somehow in the last month, wearing the shirt has proven otherwise. Luck?
Wowww!! The topic still going!! Nice.. No time for fishing now.. Busy with my work.. Hopefully end of this month can go Pla Buk’ing in Tambun.. Hehehe.. Cheers~
Hi Henessy,
You are welcome, last Monday after the rain, left to BB around 3pm, then on managed to pull up 3 reasonable sized s/h. Just out of so many lures, only one caught all the three. Maybe that only one process all the luck that day. Want to join me, see whether that only one bring any luck for you too hehehe…
Aiyoyo! Nowadays so many anglers at Subang Lake. Old man, young man, bait fishing, lure casting, CnR & sapu-all anglers. All at my favorite spot (Crocodile Farm Restaurant). Garbage also getting more. Previously, nobody wants to go fishing there, most anglers hang out at the smaller lake nearer to entrance. Now all go the spot near the restaurant. I do enjoy the company & the small chatter but ultimately, I prefer to fish quietly & alone.
Ane come with lorry, 4 more ane jumps off & setup 9 rods with Earthworms & bread.
Ah Pek come with his rusting Proton Saga, unloads & setup 4 rods.
Pakcik drives his Iswara all the way to the edge, unloads, takes off his shirt, lay a canvas on the floor, setup 2 rods & lay on the ground ZZZZZzzz…
China student come with long pole & asking thousand & one question what fish, how big, how easy to catch, what bait to use & etc in yoyo high low Mandarin. [I’m not good with Mandarin]
Man! If I’m a fish, I’d abandon that spot long gone by now.
Sigh…time for me to go search another practice area.
