Hye samo, Expensive to me means 4digit already hehe.. I am looking at a few hundred say about 200 to 300 hundred,If cheaper then better laa, RM aahh not USD..It does not have to be flashy or really branded, but if it is then ok also, wont complaint.. Better quality than the average parang and must have the casing or sarung..dunno what its called...hehehe Thanks for de info given

Wah, you can pay up to RM200 for a large chopper with a sheath… Sounds reasonable, but these days, very hard to find one that fits the bill.. You may want to look at Cold Steel’s machetes which are inexpensive. But having a sheath made will cost you even more.. I think the fuss-free deal is getting a local parang made with a wooden sheath. These knives are robust and easy to maintain..

I got these babies made some years back.. They are awesome!

These were gifts from a bro in Thailand. They are called ‘E-nep’ which is a common cutting tool used by the mahouts or elephant handlers..

E-neps are as robust as they are purty!

A buddy of mine gave me this when I visited him in KK last month.. [:D]

Nice catch bro KurauKing..

superreel,
You should have left a few strands of hair next to the blade to prove your point!

RainbowRunner

Tightlines and screaming reels

guys, i, guessing that sprimg metal is actually leaf spring material which is already flat right? what about bearing metal? how do they make knifes out of round ball bearings?

Hye Samo,thanks for de info,
may i know where to get Cold Steel’s machetes[:)]

Hye KK,
sounds interesting also for the price, will call u soon for more details[:)]
Thanks guys[:D]

Bearing Cups bro. Not the ball bearings

bearing cups? arent they circular as well? how would u make a knife out of them?

Heated to read hot 1600°C (?), pounded with heavy hammer until they form a slap. Maybe combine with spring steel and more hammering to laminate them togather. And Still more hammering till the rough shape of a blade. There grind and grind and more grinding.

Right ah Samo?

No lah. [:p] Forging, compared to stock removal (cutting a ready billet into shape and heat forming the blade shape) are two totally different process.. Heat treatment, on the other hand, is hardening of the edge or spine of the blade.. Most knifemakers here are not equipped with heat treating facilities.. But they do temper their steel to give it an edge and IIRC, the knifemaking process here is more of a vocational skill handed down by the older generation. They don’t have any text manual to refer to, only by ‘feel’ and gut instincts.. Forged knives cost more than stock removal pieces.. What I can say is that our parang is crude, but effective?

KurauKing - Gerald who?

OIC. So how is the bearing steel incoperated into a parang then?

Got any knife forging DIY techniques sites to view Samo? Sure would like to try my hands on that.

Bro LaPala - Most kampung knife makers will utilise any kind of steel they can get. Railway spike, large bearing from vehicles and leaf-spring.. So, the easiest way to get it done, is to shape the blade through heat and grind its edge.. DIY sites? Errr.. I used to have a knife and tomahawk forging DVD, don’t know where its been lah.. [:p]
