KK,
Nice. Is the knife in the first photo from Solingen? Can’t see the marks clearly. I only have a few practical ones - a Buck folding 110, the ranger knife you have seen, fillet knives, leathermans and this interesting one -

Oh I also have a mini Axe incase I get attacked by saltwater crocodiles. They seem to be always watching me when I am fishing (up north that is).
Would love to see Ubob’s collection.

I can’t remember what knife is that, ubob told me before when his friend showed us the knife, here’s more from that day…[:D]

i guess the knife in the photo is a throwing knife. usually come in set of three. forget about your(small)axe if you are attack by a croc. just stick your finger into the eyes mate.[:D][:D][:D]

KK,
are those special sharpening stones (with jap/chinese letter?) Good collection.

Supereel,
you are right. I was telling a furfy. I don’t think a knife (even a Croc dundee knife)will go thru the crocs armour, especially in a state of panic when being attacked. Good story though!!hehe

That’s the Axe laa, the grinding stone is with the buck bag…[:D]

Uncle superreel, how many OZ croc kena poke in the eyes before by you…hehehehe…[:D]

Ok, i borrow tis topic to post this video clip i just edited, enjoy…[:D]

Hi Guys,

Just to add spice to this thread (actually, no office meeting for me, this morning!)

I have between 30 - 40 knives/parangs currently. MOst of them never see daylight, of course. Only about half a dozen get to go on fishing trips[:D]

Let me talk about a parang I bought recently.
There used to be this smith in Kuala Kangsar (Sayong, to be exact) who makes a distinct piece. His trademark was the wooden handle: it’s shaped like a parrot head, with an ivory purfling for the eyes. The blade is embossed with a hammer trademark.

I spent years tracking down one of his knives. Found one in Kuala Kangsar stall, but the towkay simply refused to sell. You see, the smith has passed away, and his knives are now Elvis-memorabilia status.

Then I found the crock of gold. At this nondescript stall in Cameron Highlands (what?), I found one!!! The towkay there didn’t know its real value. Bought it for only RM60. Yeeeehah![:p]

Now for the good news. I was at Kuala Kangsar again recently, coming back from a fishing trip in Cenderoh. At the riverside stalls (we call that place ‘New York’), I came across a whole bunch of these “parrot parangs”. The guy there explained that the old smith’s son is now continuing the tradition. The parrot shape is still there, and the blade shape is close to the original. Can tell yet about the quality of the blade.

I was shown a special piece, made from stone chisel steel. It was markedly heavier than the others even though the thickness, width and length of the blade was the same. The balance was great. Visions of it slashing through bamboo stalks…

The only setback was the parrot head. It was too slim for my big hands (unlike the Batu Kikir parang). I solved it by whipping brown cord around it.

This delectable parang set me back RM140, but I just HAD to take it!! The normal ones are cheaper.

If you guys are interested, you can still get one from that stall in KK. It’s the one directly opposite Tony’s fishing stall. Happens to be my regular pit stop too (when the missus is not with me!)

Happy hunting!

hi all knife sifu here,
i am looking at getting a good fish filleting knife but not overly expensive ones. What makes a good fillet knife? I have done some search on the web, and people seem to recommend fillet knife made by Dexter or Green River.
Thanks

Bro JungleBum[:D], do you used to be a ‘budak koleq’?

Jay,

Yup, but we better stay away from this topic here!!! PM me if you want.
