SP,
thanks for the warning. Just got back to KL and first time on this site since last posting where it died on me after one reply. Internet no so easy to find in Thailand and very expensive. Even starbucks charge for internet use - cheeky especially considering the price of coffee is higher than OZ.
The jig you recommended is no longer available. bought some other types. hope it works

Supereel,
I just bought a few similar looking ones. Had to pay RM120 for being overweight. Sounds like sydney jigging is really expensive.

Oh, I forgot to post this. This “river” is in Prawet which is about 25km from bangkok city. The water is almost black - but there are people staying on stilt houses next to it. A little further away is an upmarket residential estate - ironic.
The most surprising thing is that despite the poor water quality, it is infested with huge forked tailed catfish. Estimated sizes 5 to 10 kg. They just keep surfacing when I was there. Just throw in some bread pieces and you will be shocked at the size and quantity of fish. Unfortunately I didn’t have a fishing gear with me.

Great place for CnR. God bless those who eat these fishes hehehehe

Those big fishes you saw there are the PLA SAWAI aka IKAN PATIN here.
The Thai don’t eat them. The canal also full of haruan, sepat & ikan keli.
Thomas,
thanks for the info. I was surprised to see fishes (especially big ones) with people living next to the river especially when this is a heavily populated area.
You have just explained why they are still there. Any idea why the locals don’t eat Patin?

Majority say the patin is a cheap fish, they prefer to eat the smaller ikan keli aka tohsat and the sang yi.
