Helo Lightline, much as I would like to help you, as I am based in Johor Baru, you can browse through those threads like Bagan Lalang, Port Klang and others in your area, I am sure they will be willing to include you in one of their trips. Look up for DocSyed, he is our taiko there.

Thomas,
you are right about the fishes they like - I see deep fried Catfish and Tilapia everywhere. Almost like their staple diet.
I hear they don’t eat Soon Hock as well (marble goby? - local superstition.
I have not had fish and chips for a while. In melb it used to be flake (shark meat). with impoted seafood you never know what you get. There were cases where fillets were not what the labels claimed there are.
Also imported prawns were found with high levels of antibiotics - fish farms using it to prevent disease. So i stick to local fish

Hehehe, the locals cannot afford to eat soon hock, too expensive for them, soon hock is popular amongst Asian visitors who find them cheaper than in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.
I still stick to fishes that I catch myself.

Thomas,
didn’t see a single soon hock when I was there. A friend told me he caught one brought it to a friends home and they wouldn’t eat it quoting that fish that don’t swim shouldn’t be eaten. I don’t mind eating it on their behalf hehehe

Ben, I don’t mind eating the soon hock too, the Thai call them “Pla Boo”,
some of the rich Thai do eat them when they have visitors, they like it hong kong steamed.

My two sons and myself worked there for about 10 years, we had a fine time fishing around the country with my 4x4.

Hahaha, not only that, I was in Sabah doing fish export & tuna fishing project for 10 years, before I went over to Thailand.
Hey Mike, high time you make a trip down south, we can go fishing for a day or two and talk about old time fishing 30 years ago.

Thomas,
sounds like you have 10 year stints at each business or you plan your life in 10 year blocks?
So have you had the tackle shop for 10 years yet - what happens at the end of 10 years?
How about coming to melbourne and operate a charter. I will be your best customer!

Oh yes, I never thought of that, coincidentally you are right when I account for my past encounter, in the 60s I was jumping from one job to another, started as a teacher, then involved as a law enforcement officer, then as a mechanical executive in fuel and lubricants. In the 70s I set up a small tackle shop in Sea Park, Petaling Jaya, in the 80s moved over to Sabah, in the 90s move over to Thailand. At the end of 1999 I moved back to JOHOR BARU my hometown where I set up my present tackle business, it is coming to 10 years now. I am 65 year young having two outlet, the other one in Malacca managed by my eldest son Joa and I am treating this business as a semi retirement pass-time to keep me busy tending to customers, email business and rod building. For the next 10 years, I have two options, [a] to engage a relaible and efficient manager who can manage my business
[b] to sell my business log stock and barrel, then I can go for my full retirement, traveling and fishing, may go over to see you also.
I am bored with fishing charter operation which was my part time business for years which I have to please and serve people. Now I would like to go fishing and be served, I think Bluenose is in my shoe too.

wow, a very colourful career. You certainly don’t look 65 - if that photo is current - maybe early 50.
You are so right, the service business can get on your nerves. Some customers just can be satisfied. Even if you pay them to use your service they will also find something to complain about.
I look forward to the day when I can just travel around the world fishing and photographing (without the business end attached)
