HOOKING A STINGRAY

Those who cought pari before, are the lucky one..from shore. Maybe some pari are at their power-peak after a sucessfull hunting and with lot of rest. Those weaker one have not eat for sometime and ther power is low. So this translate to ther strenght and power…

My first experience is at Pantai Tengah, Langkawi (when working at Hospital Langkawi in 1992) We were fishing for gelama dan tengkerong around 11pm, when I felt the “gelama like” pull, immediately seconds after retrieving my line, a strong pull cought me by surprise.

With no experience and not sure what kind of fish at the end of the line, I’m unable to handle it, just open the bail-arm and let the line loose.(panic and forgot to loose the drag). Luckily before the line empty, the running stop. But, when I try retrieve the line, the fish pull again.

Without experience, with arm and body trembling, I may lost the fish. I had to handover to my “senior” and after a good-fighting for 20miutes, the 8kg pari was landed.

That was my first.. and the last from surf fishing

Hi syed,

I guess, every surf angler would have felt the same as you on their first biggy…nonetheless, why should it be your last???

I’ll be motivated for more and bigger ones and more important, I would want to beach it on my own this time!

Hi Aznaf,

My fishing hobby does not being upgraded much, either the hardwares or softwares over time. Working in hospitals limit my free time and with family commitments, as the time is crucial. My fishing hobby is still going on…

After that lucky outing, I had tried many times in Langkawi, to fish the pari, but that had never happened. I have not set the target, when posted out of Langkawi since 1993 as I had not updated my new fishing spots.

After reading from these forums, I had to try my luck…

Syed,

I work in a Bank and face similar problem as you with time constraint. Nevertheless, I still do sports casting practices almost every weekends and this has help improve my fitness and health level a lot.Doctor’s advise actually…he he.

As for surf fishing, I always ensure arranging my family vacation/outing once in two months or so at beach front resorts so that I can fish in a safe and relaxing environment. Spots that I frequently go are Lumut and Rompin where there are many resorts.

…I’m sure the paris are waiting to hit your bait in one of the trips! Good luck then.

Aznaff,

Perhaps you can guide me on the potential spots, around lumut. As My in-laws live in Manjong, finding the place could be easier. I have been to Teluk Senangin a few times, but not for fishing.

I’m strongly agree with you as any kind of sports could help us stay and look healthy and happy..

Syed,

My favourite spot in Lumut is at Teluk Rubiah Golf and Country Resort where the chalets are all beach front.

The place is well secured therefore really safe when fishing at night by youself. I’ve caught several rays there ranging 5kg to 7kg and of course other species like sembilang, gerut2, daun baru etc. Bolos can be quite plenty there even. Recently, en rahim (a forumer) caught a 16kg ray during our family outing there.

More important, the whole family can have real fun there with the swimming pool, coffee hse and stuff. The only set back is the price which is a little on the high side.

You are right, I have been to Teluk Rubiah Resort and the scenery is beautiful and full of tranquility. It is a good place with family and of course trying our line for fish, day or night. The resort has a private guard and entering must be with a good reasons.. staying at the resort.

Being a novice, I need your advice. What type of bait best to be used there and at which time it is most productive and at high tide or neat tide? You tips could bring me some good luck in trying to land a second pari..on my own..Yeh…

Hi Syed,

I don’t really fish much like those hard core anglers but with with my limited experience, my advice are:

Bait- My favourite is the pon pon sarung as you can still use it effectively after 3 days. It catches all sorts of fish like sembilang, tetanda, tuka, daun baru, gerut2 etc. You can even catch the pari with it but the problem is it doesn’t last long enough as the other specimen would have taken it.Pon pon is easily available in Lumut.

If you are really targeting for the pari, for me the best bait would be bolos caught from the beach and fresh prawns.

Best Time- In my experience, during in coming tide and out going tide is the most productive. I find that I got less bites during the peak of the tide. Neap tide is also not very productive as the water is too calm and clear.

Rigs- The paternoster using the pon pon as bait is my favourite in Lumut as it catches all fish including the pari. But the best pari rig is the simple one down using bigger baits like cut bolos or threaded prawns. The one-down clipped-up rig is good for casting the bait further.

Hope the above helps.

Those advice are very informative and clear. Unlike the hardcore anglers, my fishing outings mostly for relaxation, a bit of fun and pure hobby, mostly with family members to accompany.

I will try the pon-pon bait, and with fresh bebolos in hand, hunting for elusive pari. I had seen some members in Langkawi, with no pon-pon, fresh prawn, squid etc to use as baits, they just use kembong fillet, sprinkle with some fine salts, leave it for a few hours.
