light weight reel.

heheheheh … the SS700 has many fans [:D]

friends landed big pacu in Tow Foo on 4lb braid (not intentional, chap was going for tilapia) … 8lb mono is possible … test our skill

hennessy,
the FX making little ‘klak-klak-klak’ noises when you turn the handle? happened to mine when a toman took the line in temenggor.

my abu ULT2000 was adequate when battling tow foo’s 2-3kg+ pacus near snag (less than 10 feet away)
500/1000 series quite adequate for the tilapias & lampams even those in excess of 1kg … nice fight without exhausting the fish

not many 1000 series reels can take the pacus’ runs

Hi Acheong,

Yea, some clicking sound when turning handle. I went home & service the reel, only after some tinkering, the reel no more noise but the reel feels like ‘no more virgin’ liao, koyak a little bit. Anyway, my Shimano FX 1000-OFB alrd gotten Baracuda, Catfish, Pacu ( < 2kg fishes) with no problem. Fitted with a medium rod & playing with the drag, slowly tire fish & reel it back. Quite fun actually.

I live for the Hunt!

bro’s… i don’t recomend others to go for the mini stuff.i started this tread asking for advise on buying the mini’s.it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.. for most paypond, i dont feel the need big reel or heavier pondage line. again it’s depends on the situation. Nowday’s when i fish, i dont expect to land a biggie. If i do, then i would worry about it when the fish is actually end of the line. I did land a 4kg’s pacu with 500 series reel and 6lb’s mono line. (with sifu wong giving me his nasihat bernas)…however this doesn’t happen that often..i did lost 3 other pacu’s that day. I take this part of my experience. sometime’s you win and sometime the fish win’s…

Yes, I think most of us suddenly get something bigger than what we planned - and the net result is one good reel that never feels the same again.

I did however manage to minimize this by setting the drag at the designed weight, but using my finger on the spool to increase drag when necessary. ( spinning gear )

This avoids transmitting the shock to the mechanics / gears, but can give you a singed finger because the increased drag is converted to heat where your finger is in contact with the spool. The increased drag is still felt on the bail arm and roller bearing though.

Not sure whether you bait casting experts can get the same effect - finger on the line ?

normally baitcaster can stop with thumb, in fact it’s a very good way to minimise line breakage especially when using light lines, Master G do this as he normally only use 4-6lb mono against all fish

me too thumb fish sometimes n it;s a very quick setting compared to setting the drag higher instantly hahaha

however, when i tried to thumb the spool when my first pla buk ragging around, twice, all i got is a very very bad n sore blister on my thumb lol

I only have 13 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!

Palming a spinning reel or thumbing a BC needs practises. As per most sifus will tell you…set a proper drag setting on the relevent reels and don’t meddle with them drag again while fighting the fish. Palming or thumbing; applied at proper intervals and pressure will be the way to land even titans. Fellow MFNer…Startrek…used this method to land his biggest fish [50kg+ plabuk in Thailand] to date[^]</font id=“size2”></font id=“purple”>

the sifus knew another thing…they won’t tell you…

it’s called BACKREELING…ever wonder how it’s done???

it is a meant of bringing fish in with a lighter line…

keep reading..and enjoyyy…

Back reeling is useful and fun to learn - but note that if you overload your rod / reel - the impact can still be felt by the gears because you are holding on to the handle.

We may have forgotten to mention another way - the use of a shock leader - that is why they are referred to as such - to help absorb any sudden shock if you like using no stretch braids.

tica CETUS ss500 IS THE BEST…

sifu’s i have to agree..using small size reel..you can’t depend much on the drag..make sure the line is always tight.plam and not finger the spool…(still in the process or learning the art of palming)…if you get it right..it’s would be a fight to remember..however it’s a real nightmare if you hook anything more that 2kg’s..i had 4kg laguna patin bullied my for 20-30 minutes before i could land it on UL as i wasn’t expect hook anything that day…UL is an art and fun way to fish..it’s putting your skills to the test…most of the time the fish wins..but when you win..its something that you will remember…

the only concern with playing UL tackle in paypond is, we accidentally foul hooked fish tail/body, a 1-2 kg fish can easily strip bare our spool until naked…

I think for pacu fishing we should take a look at tackletour for amazon certified reel lol

wow … how does one backreel?
switch off the anti-reverse?
other settings remain untouched?

the aim of backreeling is to allow the fish to take the line?

Yes switch off the anti reverse and reverse wind when the fish wants to take line.

Just remember to make a long cast and then to re tension your line on the reel afterwards.

Backreeling can result in lose line - main cause for wind knots later on. [xx(]

Thanks, Mike [:D]

here’s another vid on backreeling…

it’s up to you …you have nothing to lose for trying…

I’ve used UL for past few year…always bring even to deep sea…used for some squid…

last year,“accidently”[:p] managed to land small mackerel (about 0.8kg) using Tica cetus equipped with 5ib power pro and berkley cherriwood 1-6ib at tuas Yan.

soo enjoyed using this UL setup…still become “must have setup” for any trip…[:D]
