yes of course you can use marker pen to draw the eyes, but it’ll look nicer if you use an epoxy eyes as the effect is more 3D [:D].
after all the hard work of carving, painting and everything, I’m sure you will want to use the best thing possible, won’t you? [:)]
i did use marker to draw the eyes but that was for my prototype lures, cause they might be failure and I don’t want to waste the epoxy eyes on them [:p]
Actually I’m still doubtful whether an epoxy eye make a different for the fishing result, let it be 3D ke, flat ke, red ke, tear drop ke… IMO, as long as it’s reffelctive they should all work the same way… please correct me if i’m wrong.
Fu lah weh!
Fat Rap, making great progress in the finishing department I see. Wah, at this rate, you’ll be sitting in the number 3 chair next to the Grand Master very soon! (No. 2 chair is being occupied by FireTiger lah!)
Great lip cuts! Using rotary tools sure has it’s advantages!
Wahhhh FR, so skillful in painting liao. Okok, I have 2 more lure u can paint for me, hahahah LOL. Nahhhh, wanna try the painting myself.
RR, yes, using the Rotary Tool really speedup the carving and also carve what normally very hard to carve places. For all of you who started lure carving, I would recommend using a rotary tool. Just over the last weekend, i managed to carve 2 lures in a matter of 2 hours or so. Will try to post the pics. Maybe some of the sifus here can tell me if it will work or not, hahahah lol. Just ideas that pop into my head.

btw what material do you use to make the black part? I use the black ink for chinese caligraphy and it harden so fast. I only manage to make about 3 pairs each time [:p]

i mean i use marker pen to dot an eyeball in the middle. Can or not? Will it be unsuccesful in fishing?
I’m just a form4 student and only have 8 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!
a marker pen(the usual type) will mark the eyeball indefinitely, however the thing in question is it’s durability. it will go away after a few times of use, and u have to mark it down again. this is if u are not using epoxy.
if u are using epoxy, the expoxy will ‘makan’ the marker pen ink and will dissolve it and it will look messy.
so, to make it ‘nicer’… use a mixture of 5min epoxy+black gloss paint to make the pupil. wait for it to dry, and it will give u a more 3D effect. after that, u can drop the clear epoxy over it.
it’s all about preference! u do’t need to have sexy eyes like the jap lures! look at the old rapalas which only have yellow and black paint dots as eyes!
so the problem with marker pen is : durability & messy when mixed with epoxy
try use those CD maker pen
can get at any stationary store for less than RM 5.00
wouldn’t smudge/smear when apply epoxy
can appply epoxy 5-10min. after marking
but, of coz, no 3 D effect lar
If I am not mistaken, “someone” has purchased some of those small black metallic beads from the haberdasher for use as pupils of the eyes! hehehehe!
Sneaky bugger; asking people to use CD marker pen![;)]
went to do some window shopping last week for suitable material for lure making (cosmetic purposes), saw a lot of fancy, shinny, blinking… staff [:D]. the shop is just opposite of BJC, hehehehe…
oh ya FT, i saw a sticker printing service (like your FireTiger sticker) at Carefoure (how to spell this French word??). small size ones RM6 / 100 pc, cheap?
oh ya suddenly i remembered once that the hardware shop boss asked me whether i want the clear or black one. maybe we can use this as the pupil of our 3D eyes… but is there any other usage for black epoxy??? perhaps used for applying the 1st layer before painting??
yeap,
the sticker i bought for rm5 per 100(depending on size)…should be okla. u can also buy the unprinted ones to make holographic skin(depending on size of lure) or can use to make hologram eyes.
yes, the black epoxy i have used before. i prefer to use that than adding black gloss paint to my epoxies. but it’s not actually black, sort of greyish after u mixed it…but it looks good!
black epoxy can be used to fill in the grooves for thru-wiring, to seal up lead holes…etc… i loved to use them but since i can’t find it, i’m resorting to regular clear 5 mins epoxy.
james,
nice work there. but was wondering how u prevent it from tumbling over? did u put some wights at the bottom to balance it? great idea though!
the pic i took b4 field test, it didnt tumble but ride upside down hehehe
hv oledi add a small split shot at the epoxy right between the lip n bead
now it swim w a slight wriggle
was hving hell of a time seeing a baby haruan (3-4") chasing it over n over hahaha

Wahhhh, FR, that’s a real nice lure. Sure will get those Tarpons and such. Maybe the hook could be in the middle for more balance instead of at the back. With the hook in the middle, shouldn’t tumble or ride upside down, I believe.
