Still on my lunar new year long holiday. Yesterday morning went to this place and had a big missed hook. The fish took my tamban bait and swim inward and cause my line to loosen. I saw it and went forward wanted to tighten the line. But before I reach my rod, it turn out and swim away causing my rod to bend and reel alarm go screaming. I pickup the rod and strike but didn’t manage to set the hook. Instead I had accidentally pull the hook out from the fish mouth and it was set free.
No happy with yesterday incident, I went back today again. Same, casted out two rods with tamban as bait. It was about 10.30am and the tide is coming in smoothly. I went to check my bait and it was lasting so I re-casted out. Awhile later suddenly I saw my rod tip rattle and the whole rod bend forward with the reel alarm screaming. I rush to pickup the rod and strike. At the sametime I saw a big Gaf fish jump up from the water surface and do a acrobatic turn. It sink down and take more line out. After several more dive, it swim inward and I can easily wind in my line. When it was at the water edge, I waited for the next wave to carried it on the shore. Haha..a big gaff fish. After weighing, it hit the scale at 3kg. Hoho…it is my personal best record Gaf fish from the shore by surfcasting.

Damn jealouslah lookin at your photo. Last time i went to Kelong Acheh at Penyabong, there were a lot of those big size garfish around the kelong. It seems to prefer live fish only lah, dead fish tak layan, poppers followed only no strike, lure was the same also.
Anyway, i hear some people said the fish taste good if made into soup, is it true?

[:)]Hahha…I can do it U also can do it. Remember…big bait big fish. Choose a beach or jetty with deep water and fish on a incoming tide with a long snood bottom feeder rig. I am very sure that with Malaysia long natural beach, there is lots of biggie hanging around. It only patience play and with some luck. But most important is getting the right tide with the right method of fishing.
Yup, this gaffish is very smart. Due to their long beak mouth, to hook them is not easy. They take live and dead bait. U need very sharp hook to penetrate the hard mouth. Best is to let them take the bait and swallow first before U strike. Once they swallow, no way to run. They normally hang around sea structure predating for bait fish. Here the size is between few hundred gram to one over kg or the most two kg. This 3kg was a bit rare from the shoreline.
Ya..it has lots of bone so is not a very nice eating fish. Mostly people will deep fry it or boil soup and only drink the soup.

I have caught plenty of small ones before, but the big ones are very smart and cautious. The small ones can be caught using peeled shrimps with float. This type of fish are surface feeders, so you must be very lucky that it went for your bottom bait. That size is a good game using medium action rod.

I had the same experience as Snook Hunter. The garfish seems to prefer live baits and I like to use float with the live baits.
The fish didn’t even glimpse at my dead baits…
Anyway, really good catch lucky you…more nice pictures soon I hope.

Yup, they are surface predator and a live bait on a surface is the best bait. But they do take dead bait too. If u spotted them around, cast a dead bait fish toward them and slowly retrieve, they will chase after it. Just let it bite and let it swallow first before U strike. They normally bite the bait on the long mouth and swim along. If U strike too early, likely U will pull out the bait from it mouth.

Haha..ya…I was surprise also when I saw the size. That why it beat my todak personal shore record. Even at jetty the most is about one kg plus size.
THey do take bottom bait especially at the beach as the water is more shallow. They will go deeper to find food if the surrounding bait fish is rare.
