You are most welcome edgeliner, please check with deferick on the costs and logistics. It would require some cold hard cash and gears. As for the rigs, I will make a few start up sets for everyone, so we are ready for the first bites

Dear Doc,
Hope this time we can enjoy more toward you latest report. Wish you a golden success

Looks like a pretty good outing! Didnt realise Bob was a keen angler too, sayang couldnt make the trip!
Salam Doc,
I have known Chan for more than 2 years now and I have never gone fishing around Pekan waters with anyone else. He is the best. I have also on several occassions read your thread on weather forecast, then this Pekan trip report you went on Chan’s boat. U mentioned somewhere that u noticed a pattern in the weather that makes that particular day u went fishing, an ideal if not perfect for such activity. Further down the thread u r organising another trip on the 2nd May. Based on this I thought that u must have noticed another similar weather pattern forming up on that day(2/5). Looking at all the catch photos you have posted, I’d say this weather pattern must be really good, therefore I straight away called Chan in Pekan and tried to make a booking on the next day(3/5) thinking I could catch the tail end of the good weather pattern. But guess what, he is also booked on that day. (I wonder who?..hehehe).
Well Im goin anyway but only the week after, on the 9 & 10 May. I would like to ask a favour from you Doc, if you dont mind, I’d really appreciate it if you could put your magic hat on and wave your magic wand to forecast the fishability on those dates 9/5 & 10/5.
I hope one of these days we’d be able to meet up. It would be really nice to put a name and the reputation that comes with it, to a face.
Thank you very much…

Hi Doc,
As for fishing at Pekan, how deep is the water? And what kind of setup (size leader, batu ladung…)need to prepare for the bottom fishing using live prawn?
I’m new here. Pls be patient with me as i will ask a lot of stupid thing regard fishing stuff.
Big E
Weather is quite a science of multiple variables but all in all I always believe the “Almighty” has the final say in it. The date I select was one based for calm waters (as both my son & my friend, Bob are not very gppd tolerance for seasickness)and good water temperature (29 degrees Celsius). I did a interpolation of the variables and have to match it to a WEEKEND (for Bob and my son) and got that date.
I have always used 29 degrees as my benchmark temperature, and so far it has yet to fail me. Go to my Weather Forecast and look for the Sea Temperature map and go fish in areas with ORANGE patches [:)]
Now to go deeper into Pekan itself, the place as you know Big E, is not really deep. The good spots here can be in the depth of 45 to 60 feet, therefore weather is extremely important to get a better catch, a slight rain will make the “saltiness” drop and in this one case, the Angchor will not bite.
Finally I noticed if you want to get the good fishes, your leaders and main lines must be small so as to place the bait as naturally as possible.
WMT
I use light to medium gears in Pekan. My favourite gear setup is Reels of 1000 to 2000 sizes, roda in the 15-20 range and lines braids of 20lbs and below. My leaders is INVISILINE 25lbs and hooks of Gamakatsu size 1 standard or circle hooks (easy to release the unwanted Samy Vellu … he he - Political Pun intended)As for weights I use size 2 to 6 depending opn the water. You may use the line spreader “tanduks” but go for clear coloured ones
Salam Doc,
I totally agree with you. Weather forecasting, as its name suggest is only a forecast or more crudely a guess, with all the scientific variables analysed and put together to come up with a possible outcome, and for this case the condition of the weather. I hope I did not send out a wrong impression that I truelly beleive what your analysis result would definitely be the real outcome. You dont have to worry Sir, we are on the same page on this matter. “He” has the final say. What we are trying to achieve here is, through weather forecasting, we stack the odds to our favour to achieve the best possible result, and by “His” will if we are going to strike it big, ‘praise be upon him’ if not, 'praise be upon him’also.
Yes the waters aren’t that deep around pekan, and I also use light gears PE2 rod and line and 30lb leaders. Maybe not light enough compared to what u advised. I think on my next trip I’ll try those lighter lines and leaders. Oh and yes for the tip on “tanduks”, thanks heaps. I’ll get the transparent one. I normally do light jigging. But if on that day the fishes shy away from those metal bits, we would switch to bottom and/or live bait drifting. Have you tried jigging in Pekan? Maybe you could share some tips/techniques?[:)]
Well Sir its been very informative and enlightening. I look forward to your weather “guess” [;)] on the 1st May. Thank you very much and God willing you’ll have a great one on your next trip to Pekan.
Thanks heaps.

P.S
The 1st to 3rd May trip is not mine, I am on the 23rd May [:D], I need to confirm with Chan first before announcing it

hi Doc,
I really respect u using 1000 to 2000 size of reel. May I know what brand & model of reel u have for the size above? Also how long (m/yds)the line u can put?
Another question, I have a small spinning reel Abu cardinal 302, not know whether is size 1000 or 2000, can I use for the bottom fishing at pekan?
I’m new here. Pls be patient with me as i will ask a lot of stupid thing regard fishing stuff.
I use many reels of those Sizes, my favourite is the Shimano Sedona 750, loaded with 12lbs US Power Pro Red braids, then the Sedona 1500 loaded with 20lbs PP Red too. Another Reel which I used in Pekan is a VIVA 15, which I modified using ultra smooth silicone/leather drag sets which I got in a fishing shop near the lake Geneva, this I load with 20lbs jig master 10m spaced colour band.
For surface and drifting, I use the Okuma 20 or Okuma 30 (depending on the Target fish) bait runner loaded with 20lbs PP red and finished with 3 meters of Invisiline Fluorocarbon shock leader
Bro, about the reel size, it can be entertaining when you hit a 3-4 kg fish BUT if you are fishing near some Unjams, then a bigger setup might be advisable. Small gears will mean a longer fighting time, you might need to get a general consensus of all on board, what is the maximum tolerance time given to land a fish [:D] I remembered in Koh Adang once, a pal hit a 50kg Shark on a 20lbs setup and suffered a muscle hammering fight from 5am to sunrise … the rest of us slept through his misery
P.S I used the Shimano 750 in Sealion too
Hi Doc,
how are you? Long time no speak. I will be fishing in Pekan 24th may (first time for me). What fish can I expect and what lures, jigs are suitable? Also is trolling any good there? What is the likely hood of sailfish in Pekan?
Any other advise?
Carry a rod and speak softly.
Hi Bro Flicker
Yup you are right, long time no see, pity we missed each other by a mere day. If you want to use jigs in Pekan, get the smaller ones of lighter colors, redheads is a good choice. I use jigs of 25gms and retrieve at mid speed, twitching left/right slightly
For live bait, prawns and live kembong works best, my rig was on a plastic clear spreader, weighted down and a leader of 3 feet.
Possibility of sail hit? Rare but it happens, that is fishing right?
Bro Doc,
so you only fishing for 1 day? Thanks for the tip. I have never fished pekan so looking forward to something new. Hope to catch a few biggies. From the description of your gear used mainly smaller fish eh? Guess I will have to pack my trusty calcutta 50b to pekan. hehehe
Carry a rod and speak softly.
Bro Flicker,
For fish size, see page 1
Hi Weatherman…[:)]
