Shark Report - 2600mm weighing 120kgs.

After much needed advice and help from friends and forum members, I was able to realise my dream of catching a shark.

Today, I caught a shark 2.6m long, weighing 120kg!

I have always had a fear of sharks, the graphic images of JAWS the movie have always been embedded in my memory ever since watching it when I was a kid… the fear of ever coming close to one has been erased after accomplishing my biggest catch, I have overcome my biggest fear! (Although not a Great white shark but close to one lol)

Around 4am the 5 of us (Patrick Chen, Patrick Zheng, Alex, Alex’s GF and Me) headed out to Phillip island. We took the charter to Bass Strait in search for mako sharks and others…

After passing San Remo pier, the waves started becoming choppy and the boat was moving up and down in time to the waves….

All of us took our travel sickness pills 30 mins before the boat ride but it didnt help much. The Boatman suggested that we should stop near the pier to fish for flathead and squid so so that it could be used as bait for the shark..

The sea was dam rough… 20 mins later nearly all of us suffered seasick, Alex threw up twice… followed by his girlfriend who also threw up twice! Patrick Zhen wasnt feeling much better.. And I was on the verge of chucking.

After another 10 mins, Alex and his girlfriend each threw up more then 6 times… The situation was getting nasty, so I told the boatman that we should go back to the pier to drop Alex and Patrick Z off. (Patrick Z was going to catch a business Trip to China the next day)

We told the boatman that 2 of our friends needed to be dropped off and that we should fish inlet because the waters on the way to bass strait was not looking too good. The sea was so choppy that it scared the hell out of us, it was either our 1st or 2nd trip to go boat fishing.

The boatman was kind enough to bring back 2 of our friends to shore… he suggested that if he can find a spot inlet for us to fish for snapper it wont be as choppy, but he needed to get more bait because we did not catch enough.

So we returned to the pier to let both my friends off, while the boatman went off to get bait, my friends had time to recover and were soon feeling better to join us on the boatride. I told my friends, since we paid for the service in advance, they might as well try again. This time we were going to fish inlet therefore the water will not be as rough… they agreed and came with us…

Then the boat man brought us near the Hobbies (Where penguin and seal island is) to catch some snapper.. We caught around 4 to 5 snappers, then a seal came along… he stole our snapper when we got hook… in total within 30 mins he took around 8 of our snappers.

We were feeling so frustrated and angry, the waters was also starting to roughen up and we could feel a change in the tide …. I was like… damm… this seal definatly is here to stay!!.. even the boatman was pissed off too when he got 2 huge snappers weighing 2 kgs but was yet again taken away by the seal, the seal would swim for 20 to 25 meters, throw the snapper out of his mouth and grab it again….

Towards the end of the day, our bait was starting to run low.. I took a huge mullet bone, used the whole boneless fillet mullet and put on my 2 shark hook.. in order to secure the boneless mullet, I put on 2 cable ties and lowered it down to roughly 32 meters…….

The seal came close to my bait becasue I could see him diving close to our boat…. I was thinking to myself ‘no.. no.. I am not going to hook you up, get away from my bait……..’

Suddenly………… I felt a huge buckle… I was almost thrown over the boat… I was shouting.. “****!!! HE IS ON!!! THE SEAL IS ON!!!.. (I was thinking to myself… OH NO!!!) Then the

boatman says.. “No??? the seal is still here………….”

I was like.. “HUH??? WHAT??? Then what is f**king below that is pulling so hard???”

My line went off……………………… TLD20 SCREAMSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS………… I tried to put 1/3 of the tension on… STILL SCREAMSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS………………. No stopping……………….

Deep down I was screaming with excitment I was feeling.. 'Wow.. I have never ever felt such a rush of adrenalin in my life… this must be a dam huge thing…. I even shouted.. “its big… its big.. I think its around 20 to 30 kgs…”

It went for a dive around 100meters below… (in the video).. an easy run for 80 to 90 meters… I was trying so hard to bring him back to the boat but man.. this thing really had some strength in him… no kidding.. he was pulling so much even I set my drag to almost 3/3!!! YES!! Almost full drag and he was still going….

So I had to reel him back quicker then he could swim away… in the end after an hour or more of tension between me and my catch.. I was able to pull him near the boat with my min tld20 ….I told the boat man I can see the start of my wind up leader, he should be very close and near…

Boatman went to fetch the huge net for it… by the time the catch surfaced.. the boatman shouted “damm … it’s a huge shark!!” he went back to change the net to the gaff, rope and the metal 800lb wire to tie his tail…. It took us another hour to get the shark tied beside the boat (More photos and videos coming )

Within one hour we caught 12 snappers, although 6 was snatched away by the seal… a Barracouta and a few flat heads……

Sorry for the long post…. But this has been one of the most memorable and exciting chartered fishing experience I have encountered in my life of fishing.

Thank you friends and family for helping me, showing support and giving me valuable advice on this fishing trip.. I really appreciate it and will never forget it for the rest of my life.

It has truly been a wonderful experience for someone who knew nothing about fishing to catching a shark. It is a once in a lifetime experience and no words can explain the satisfaction I have achieved.

Also many thanks to Peter (boatman) from T Cat Charters (http://www.tcatcharters.com.au ) for Giving us such a wonderful Experience and for being very patient as this was our first boat trip and there was many things to learn..

Hi Rustie,

A big welcome to MFN FORUM, keep them coming bro, very interesting write up, could feel the excitement and your adrenalin flowing while wresting with that “six gill” oceanic shark. I got one many years ago, it tipped the scale at 315kg with 50lb line, took me two grueling hours to surface that monster, needed a crane to lift it on board.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for the warming Welcome! The Shark i caught compare to yours is nothing. Makes my shark so small now and Makes me want to catch another one lol..

Anyway I am going on a charter on this coming Tuesday 12 April. We are in searching for Mako’s and Thresher Sharks. I heard they are one of the Best fighter among all shark except White pointer = (Great White Shark)

This time, We are using Eel for Gummy Shark, Tuna, tommy ruff, mullet, squid for others.

We will be setting up 1 kgs Berley for them every half hour.. Bring around 30 kgs of Berley.

We are going to settle around 50m depth of the sea up to 70 meters.. anything deeper of the sea will be very choppy.. We depend how the weather goes in Bass Strait in Victoria.

Any Advice you can give? Thomas

Cheers

James

Ha ha, you want advice, you get it.

1] to tackle those balls breaking monsters, you need a good
belly harness to protect your family jewels, otherwise ouch!
very painful, could be disastrous. The belly harness is only
good for those smaller ones up to 100kg.
2] for bigger monsters you need the lap harness plus waist &
butt harness which you can lug on to your reel to fight the fish
with your body weight, by bending your knees almost to squating
position with legs apart, slowly raise your body as you crank in
your line. With proper harness, you can tackle monsters 10 times
your body weight. Stand up combat is a test of your power against
your adversary, some times the fight could last for hours.
3] use galvanized hooks with short wire trace attached to your top shot or wind on leader. Release the shark after the photo session by cutting the leader very near to the hook. I would feel guilty if I kill another shark after achieving my personal record
4] never bring a live shark on board, because it will thresh about and can sweep every thing over board. SAFETY comes first.
5] gummy shark is nice to eat and it must be gill and gut and bury in ice to keep it fresh.

Happy fishing and tight line in your next trip, cheers!!
Keep your catch report coming James.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for the Great Advice.. And Yeah, i need a Gimbal Belt… didnt find one that suit a big guy for me.. lol… Looking into one with the harness, around $40 Aud on Ebay…

As for the Hooks and Trace.. I am running 10/0 Shark hook with Knife Edge from http://www.rigmastertackle.com.

Trace: 3meter of 300 LB 49 Strand S/S Black Nylon Coated
Wind on Leader: Sufix 300lb 5 meter wind on to my trace…

And Yeah, the boatman did not allow the shark to come up to the boat till it was bleed properly and we took more then 1 hour to bleed and trolling him by the boat till all the blood has been out..

Yeah, i feel guilty about it too but hey, we almost finish the 43kgs of meat.

Anyway, thank you for your great advice bro and I will post some reports after this Tuesday..

cheers

Hi James,

Looks like you are well equiped with those terminal tackles, except that your TLD 20 is shad too small in case the big mako comes along, any way your skipper will know how to chase the fish if your line is 2/3 out. With your wind on leader you only need a short steel trace, there is no need to pull the trace, you only have to wind in the shark for a picture and cut the leader near the hook to release the shark. Have a good trip and tight line.

Rustie,
if you can make it bring
Surf rod
6 kg rod
prawn net, prawn light
waders
crab net

Carry a rod and speak softly.

Cool Ben, I will let u know how i goes after my charter on Tuesday.. Going on to a big boat, 9 of us… going out to Bass strait.. will anchor at 70 to 90 meters if the weather is good..

I have made my rod holders (PVC 35mm and 40mm inlet piping with Sharp Aluminium attached to go into the sand) today for the surf and will bring a few surf rods there, brought some blue poppers like that one u told me…

As for the waders and prawn net and prawn light, dont think i wanna go that far yet.. already spend more then $1500 on my fishing gear since last month…

you guys catching prawns all the way at lake entrance or mostly fishing? (dont might rocks and surf or pier fishing)

Is there a lot of mullet to catch at LE (lakes entrance)?? if there is, i will make the mullet bait with tuna oil, bread, bread crumbs, flour and sugar.

let me know… Any gummies there? Might wanna bring my game rod

Rustie,
sounds like you are well prepared.

Lakes entrance has many forms of landbased fishing. From the surf you can catch salmon, gummy sharks, rays cod, mullet, trevally etc etc. Depends on luck and what is running.

Can also spin for tailor off the breakwall or on the surf (get some “slice” lures - 30gm most effective. Chrome and withsome green on it)

We usually fish during morning and evening. (surf or lake tyres)
Afternoon - rest or crabbing (depending on tide)
Night - around 9pm prawning (best time is about 1 week after full moon)

No need to bring game rod. Surf rod or 6kg rod good enough for gummies

The fresh fish shop has excellent sydney rock oysters (at least 2 dozen per person recommended)
At night there are many freat restaurants especially if you like a huge steak.

Carry a rod and speak softly.

Hai rusty and others,
What happened to the shark after u caught it? sell it off?

Me, my friends and family eat the 43 kgs of meat.. lasted around 2 weeks..

We use the shark meat to make fish ball, fish soup.. fish and chips… shark fins soup.. BBQ… pan fried… it taste really good.. still have around 5 kgs left..

you should have something like this left bro…

hey rustie, water temp is a bit too cold for sharking at the moment, a couple of months back there was a plague propotrion of (small) bronzies in port phillip bay.. at this time of year most of the catches will either be seven gillers or gummies. for most seven gill sharks that u will encounter heavy tough mono leader is susficcient. i’ve landed numerous seven gill sharks on 80lb leader whilst gummy fishing around mornington peninsular. with regards to shark hooks, i think 9/0-12/0 owner jobu hooks or even big black magic circles will be much better than those stainless ones, especially if u r intending to release. looking forward to see ur next report on how u went on tuesday..
