Tenkara Fly Fishing

Great report and fotos. The prawn rod look very nice…whats the brand/length?

For those interested in getting into Tenkara without spending a bomb, I’ve found the Top Pole G (for graphite) by Sure Catch. It comes in either a 3.3 or a 3.6 meter model. At a couple of ounces, its very similar to the traditional Tenkara rod, except that there is no “lilin” at the tip… it has a tip ring. Action is about 7:3 … very, very nice for little tengas daun on fly, or for prawning at the bigger commercial ponds. Oh yes, they cost around Rm 45.00 each only.

Brand - The Anglar
length - 5/6/7 feet (adjustable)

got this for RM50.00 from my nearby tackle shop (quite expensive), t/box also got sell similar one and much cheaper.

lilian can DIY using braided line ma…or if u dare, just use rubber band.

got photo of the Top Pole G anot?? where can find this rod?

Hallo Soon, “lilian” is a girl who should not be at the tip of a rod lah.[:D] (joke only, yah)

afaik, the Top PoleG is being sold in some tackle shops for sometime now, as a prawn rod. If you cannot find them do let me know as I think the shop in Klang has a couple more. Do you want the 3.3 or 3.6 mt one?

<><ICHTUS><>

went to kepong tackle just now…found out that my “the Anglar” rod is just RM39.00 only!!! adoi!! sakit hati betul..

then was attracted to one white rod…the rod much softer and more flexible..so end up getting another one (6-7 feet)

i’m really poison by tenkara now…newbies should actually try tenkara and if they like such fishing style, then upgrade to fly fishing. tenkara cheaper ma

back to old school fishing style la…
use bamboo stick or pelepah salak also can aa… hehehe
more cheaper…kekeke

Here’s a pic of the archer fish i caught this morning using a black ant fly and the Top Pole G. It works nearly as well as the imported Tenkara rod.

Alamak, sorry vm … forgot to resize the foto … anyway, it shows up the Top Pole G better. [:D]

beautiful archer. well done!

dennis

Thanks Dennis,

It works very well for small garfish and even mudskippers too.[:)] … but still cammot catch a belanak yet.[:(]…and thanks to someone who resized the foto.

And to ky_soon, my sincere apologies … checked it up, should be “lilian” and not lilin.

<><ICHTUS><>

no probs, tony.

u were there at EAK last Sat afternoon izit? sorry din say hi to you, was not sure if it was you..hahaha

nxt time lets go tenkara together…just went for a short session today for tengas, was very dissapointed when i saw ppl holding a net full of tengas (around 50-60 or maybe more :()..they were using net and DIY traps placed under big rocks.

Yes lets get a few flers and arrange to Tenkara … you free on weekdays? … I’m not working now.[:)]

And yes, was at EAK last Sat, trying out my new bluegill rod … was targetting the PBs, but saw none.[:(]

Its always very sad when these netters get into the act. They can’t be Aslis as they normally take only what they need using rod n line.

Here’s more information on Tenkara. Goto www.tenkarabum.com Lots of articles and reviews on equipment.

weekdays ar?? see timing lor…if late afternoon, might be able to make it. working ler..

from my observations, PBs at EAK normally play beside the edge only…no need go far far.

the timing is early morning - 7am till 9am (latest) and evening 5pm - 6pm (when the sun is setting), u can see them all at the side hunting for small fish.

we brought lots of seluang and burley to attract them to come, my fren caught the big temensis on the platform (on live bait la)..

and we got countless of small/mid size PBs on our “tenkara” rod using live “clouser” (seluang)..hehehe. really fun to hook them up on our lightweight rod..

i even caught a sebarau on my tenkara rod…

nxt trip, i’ll try to use clouser or charlie instead

Yup, you’re right. The PBs are usually active during the dawn and dusk hours … esp. if there are lots of baitfish around. The other way to locate them is near rocky or stoney areas when they are breeding, as they have to deposit their eggs on the surface of rocks or stones. This is when the parents are most aggressive and easy to get.[:D]

Here’s a foto of the modification made to my Top Ploe G after consultation with Nick Ooi. The metal ring was heated and taken out. A butt loop made from braided nylon was then attached, with superglue and the usual plastic sleeve … If desired, one could just do away with the loop and tie a knot to get a “lillian” I guess. Anyway, it works better than with the metal ring.[:)]

Unk Tony, how was the furled leader? Tested it yet? [:)]

ooo…uncle tony use it for tenkara izit? i’m using F/leader as well ma, can cast easily using it..if too short, just extend it with tapered tipets, so casting is smoother and can reach further.

I’m using both furled and level line as tenkara leaders at the moment, and have not decided or setteld on one or the other.
I still use the “original” furled leader from TenkaraUSA as well as a homemade level line. The level line from TenkaraUSA is a fluorocarbon which is dark pink in colour, since the complaint is that the normal fluoro is difficult to see.

At the moment, I’m also using a 15lb. yellow mono by Okamoto, which looks similar to the old Berkley Ironsilk which is greenish in colour. I just attach a 3 to 4 ft. tippet of 4 lb. most times … lowered to 2 or 3 lb. for drys. The leader itself is from 7 to 10 ft. long. No trouble casting with it. What I also want to try is to do a 2-step thingy … maybe 6 ft. yellow Okamoto, another 4 ft. clear mono or fluoro of 8 lb. and a 3 ft. tippet

Anyway, as for distance, I guess its not a big issue as the distances cast are not that long…afterall we’re just after small fellas not very far away.[:)]

No lah fisheR, have not tried your furled leader yet …though I can imagine it will be great for drys.

Hi fisheR,

Used the furled leader 2 days ago to catch small Geruts and baby Breams near my place. It casts very well, tho’ I find it too short when used for tenkara. Can make it like 9 or 10 feet long?

<><ICHTUS><>

I am in the middle of configuring a furled leader taper for tenkara.
The furled leader will be around 10’ to 11’ long… and it will be difficult to furl.. [:D][:D]
