Tenkara Fly Fishing

I suspect a 10 footer would be verrrry difficult to furl fisheR… maybe start with an 8 footer, then add another mono leader of 3 feet and a tippet of another 3 feet?

Looking forward to trying out one.[:)]

guys…

tenkara looks cool n it seems that u guys have been innovative in using udang pole rods as alternative if I am not mistaken…to that end I have also bought an udang pole rod but really do not know how to set up the tenkara tackle..

if i may…can you guys illustrate the set up please?

And if u guys r having tenkara fishing session anywhere near kl I would love come and see and pick some pointers…

appreciate all help…

thank you

cheers..

Hi twelvefooter,

The udang rods are recommended for those who are keen on trying out what Tenkara is about. The surecatch rod we are talking about cost some Rm45.00 only, as compared to nearly Rm600.00 for the “real thing” from Tenkara USA.

Perhaps the best thing to do for a start is to goto www.tenkarausa.com for an intro into Tenkara, esp. the videos. No problems meeting for some short session around KL/PJ … eg. the Kelana Jaya ponds hold good populations of Jaguars that can be caught on Tenkara…see ya.

<><ICHTUS><>

tony, what is this fish - “Jaguars” that you mention??

twelvefooter, since u got ur rod!! good…next step u will need a furled leader.

you can get it locally here:
http://www.malaysianflyrodders.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=894

if you are still new to fly fishing, i assume u still haven’t tie your own fly…u also can buy them at a lower cost here:
http://www.malaysianflyrodders.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=812

tippet: u can get it from any local tackle shop (from 2pbs to 10pbs, depending on what fly u r using)

lastly, u need to find spot for tenkara fishing!!!

p/s: let me know if hot linking is not allowed. i post it here so that new joiners can know where to find the neccesary stuff.

tony n ky…

thanks for the input. I bought an udang pole rod (but the towkay said it was for ikan puyu, 3m with 3 sections. It is stamped Shimano but I am not sure whether it is really a Shimano. But what the heck it only cost me rm20!

I’ve gone thru the tenkarausa site quite a bit n am intrigue to venture into this type of fishing as it is cheaper than the real fly fishing. The best thing I see is that it is fishable even at the longkang hehehe…

will make time to visit kelana jaya pond (near the stadium isn’t it?) and see if any of u guys r there…

thank you

cheers..

Hi ky,

They are the Jaguar Cichlids which are very common in the KJ Ponds. These “ugly” fellas take goldhead nymphs readily. Used to be common (with the small PBs)in the Subang Lake. Google it up to see a pic.

Twelvefooter,

If its the normal puyu rod, its usable, but too stiff and heavy for Tenkara. For leaders, you could start with a fluorocarbon level line. Just cut off some 10 ft.(of 15 lb.) and attach another 3 feet of 4 lb. tippet.

<><ICHTUS><>

woah!!! nice looking fish ler…somemore damn aggressive, looks like fun on tenkara or 3wt rod…KJ pond huh…might go tomorrow to test power..btw the fish can bring back??? lets export some to EAK ler…

“Aggressive looking” and take flies readily, yes … but aiyoooh, please do not put any into EAK … the PBs are already there what.[:(]

<><ICHTUS><>

hahaha…ok la..lets go find more PB and export them too EAK.

Dron/Ben/Nik, when wat to start the operation PB hunting?

Guys, a site for tenkara enthusiasts; http://www.tenkarabum.com/index.html

During our recent trip to the Maldives we encoutered some pretty adverse weather conditions… 40mph winds and torrential rain meant port calls every evening. Luckily, we had Tony and his Tenkara to provide us with some entertainment and excitement!

Small Triggerfish were, initially, willing takers… until they learned to associate goldhead nymph with sore lips

Nice… next time will need to bring Tengkara rod there… saw a lot of bait fish around the boat when we park out… should be fun hook up the kilo size bait fish…

Hi Dennis, they came back for more fun after we laced the goldhead with banana.[:D]

The secret we learned from Wiranto to use the “trigger” to collapse the spine of the fish was fantastic … we live to learn man.

Yep, Wirianto was trigger happy in that trip too…
