UFO - Fly Casting Clinic with Peter Hayes

Hello everybody, We received this letter from Peter Hayes last week!

[Bintoro has forwarded on your email information. I am looking forward very much to coming to visit and teaching your fly fishers what I can regarding all aspects of fly fishing.

I have earmarked the 21,22,23 May for the visit. I have not yet planned my Australia wide casting classes this coming winter so that period is still flexible for me so exact flight times can be whatever suits the occasion. Just let me know so I can plan around the trip.

From my conversations with Bintoro I understand you would like to run a general Intermediate/Advanced casting clinic on the Saturday ( I could be flexible about the content of this class and work it out on the day to meet all participants expectations).

Then I could run a CCI prep course on the Sunday. Just let me know if it needs to be different to this.

Regarding numbers. I think if casters are at an intermediate to advanced level then we could do 12 - 14 casters each day. I would forward you some notes for participants to read before coming along to streamline the day and give the opportunity for discussion on the interpretation of the notes. I need some time to tidy up my notes - (Bintoro has kindly offered to format them more neatly)

The days should perhaps run from 9 am to 5 pm with a lunch break and morning and afternoon short break.

I would love to have a fish locally with you guys but am mindful of getting back home to my regular commitments also.

A bed at one of your casters places would suit me better than you finding commercial accommodation for me. I am a simple guy that is very passionate about fly casting and the teaching of it. Please do not go to too much trouble to look after me.]

May 21~23 is certainly going to a very special date for fly fishing here in Malaysia and Singapore! Don’t miss out on the occasion!

Dear Singapore flycasters, you have indicated your interest in Spey Casting lessons and, rest assured, we will be conveying your message to Peter about conducting a class in Spey Casting!

Melbourne Fly Fishing Conclave Report Read More
15 Oct 2009
The Inaugural Melbourne Fly Fishing Conclave hosted by Peter Hayes was held at the beautiful Cammeray Waters, Woodend over the weekend of 3/4 October.
Upwards of 60 keen fly fishers were in attendance to take part in a wide range of workshops covering all aspects of fly fishing that were delivered by a group of tutors that Peter Hayes proudly calls ‘the best of the best’.
Most guests were staying for the weekend and many additional guests came for day trips. Conclave sponsors Sage, Reddington, Scott, Scientific Angler, Vision, Cortland, Innovator and Rio had all the latest gear available for guests to try.
Whilst fishing in the three well stocked lakes was not the prime focus of the weekend there were plenty of well conditioned fish caught.
Mick Hall (the bug whisperer) had a great hands on entomology class on the lake and there were millions of fat, ripe nymphs waiting to go. No wonder the trout were fat.
First time fly fisher young Jack Mauger, was taught to cast in the beginners class on the first day and he managed his first ever fish on a fly the following day. Jack is well hooked on the sport now. Well done Jack.
Australia’s two handed casting guru Bintoro was kept busy with a high level in interest in this growth aspect of the sport. It was wonderful to watch this graceful method of fly casting enjoyed by so many people.

Peter Hayes Casting Clinic in Malaysia is a project of UFO Malaysia. Our objective is strictly for the uplifting of knowledge and enjoyment of flyfishing in Malaysia, and the region as a whole.

The organizing commitee has decided on EAK as the venue for the casting clinic on May 21 & 22, 2010. The venue for May 23 will be decided once we can have the final itinerary confirmed.

EAK has undergone a series of improvements over the last few weeks under the tireless stewardship of Nik Rahimi and Dron Lee, and with invaluable help from everyone involved.

In the following weeks and months, we look forward to your further assistance in helping get EAK in shape to acommodate 10~12 people casting at the same time.

Anyone still interested of joining the clinic by Peter Hayes…?

I just spent six days last weekend with Peter Hayes during the Tasmanian Fly Fishing Conclave as an instructor in two handed spey casting. The conclave was held at Peter Hayes Fly Fishing School lodge in Cressy, Tasmania.
The conclave itself was on Saturday to Monday, but three days prior to the conclave we had a CCI (Certified Casting Instructor) get together, CCI Test Prep Workshop and CCI Testing. We had a lot discussion about casting, talk about casting, indoor casting competition and even when we are sleeping, we are dreamt about casting … pretty sick heh![:D][:D][:D]
The Prep workshop was conducted by Peter Hayes FFF MCI (Master Casting Instructor), Peter Morse MCI, Matt Howell MCI and special guest instructor extraordinaire Mr. Paul Arden MCI from Sexyloops. There were 4 CCI candidates at the Test Prep workshop, myself and few other CCI was in there as a listener. I only can say that those MCI are good and knows what they are talking about. I was also invited to become an observer during the CCI testing, this is to ensure and as a witness that the two MCI conducting the test fairly. It was great experience seeing how different candidates performs under pressures.

I have seen many many times the way Peter Hayes teach casting and he have amazing wealth of knowledge on anything about casting, he will make a big difference on your casting.
Above all he is a very good teacher/instructor. Peter is the owner/operator Peter Hayes Fly Fishing School and Hayes on Brumby fishing Lodge. It is a beatiful facility that can host up to 25 people, it has a big lecture room, comprehensive fly fishing library and big casting pond right at the bank of Brumby’s creek.

Here are few photos from the workshop:

Peter Hayes FFF MCI talking about many different aspect of fly casting during the CCI Prep Workshop.
His lecture room full of fly fishing memorabilia

Paul Arden FFF MCI from Sexyloops talking about many different style of fly casting

Peter Morse FF MCI explaining the Bill Gammell’s five principal of fly casting.

Matt Howell FFF MCI explaining the certification process and instructors code of conduct.

Lecture room during the workshop, four CCI candidates and few qualified CCI were present as an observer. It’s good for me to refresh all of those theory again.

Shaun Ash, a CCI candidate from Queensland during the CCI test conducted by Peter Hayes and Paul Arden. Andrew Connell CCI (in blue top) and myself was the observer. Shaun pass the test.

Chris Bassano, Fly Fishing Guide from Tasmania during the CCI test also conducted by Peter Hayes and Paul Arden. There were four CCIs as an observer, Andrew Connell, Greg Jackson, Roy Wybrow and myself was the observer. Chris pass the test with flying colour.

More photos to come………………….

After finished with those CCI Prep workshops and CCI Testing, it’s time to have some fun before the general conclave guests start arriving. This is the time when everybody showing off their casting prowess.

Here is a distance casting competition using Sage Xi2 16wt (sixteen weight) loaded with a Big Game fly about the size of a mullet (about 14”). Definitely not for the faint hearted.

Peter Hayes in action with 16wt Sage Xi2

Peter Morse don’t want to get let behind, he took the challenge too!

Matt Howell with perfect forward cast with the fly whistling a sonic boom next to his ear.
You can see the size of the fly in yellow circle ………..it was huge!!!

Paul Arden, Mr. Sexyloops showing the newest CCI, Chris Bassano how to do a spey cast with single handed rod.

Now is getting really silly, fly casting competition using a broom ….yes a broom with a single guide at the top and 5wt fly line. These guys can cast with anything!!! Amaaazing!!

You wouldn’t believe unless you see it yourself how far Paul Arden, Mr. Sexyloops could cast a 5wt line with a single guide at the top.

Peter Hayes took the challenge too!

Hey Bintoro, your post couldn’t have come a better time, we were just having a discussion last night pertaining to the casting clinics to be held next month! Can’t wait to get my casting stroke tuned!

I’d sure like to cast heavy flies into a side wind better without knocking my rod and running the risk of pulling an eyeball out! I broke my boronII MX last week while fighting a fish. I suspect Charlie had something to do with it!

We’ll have a satay stick with a single guide at the tip end ready, hehe!

We actually have a chopstick challenge. We put one guide at the tip of a chopstick and a flyline. We were casting in the lodge corridor until very late at night! I don’t know when these boys going to grow up? [:D][:D]

There will be a meeting at Tacklebox on Saturday 1st of May at 2pm to de-brief all on the casting clinic… Hope to see you there.

wow, 100 percent pass, cant wait to meet up with Peter Hayes

everything going smoothly so far.
