UFO - Fly Casting Clinic with Peter Hayes

Smile fr ear to ear..

Today, 30th of May… after 2 days of clinic with Peter Hayes…

This morning, Ben shout at me: Dron… look at your loop…!!! Great..!!! I look at my loop… wooo.. I have never been able to cast like that before..!!!

I look around… I realize that.. everyone have sharp and nice loop… everyone can roll cast 60’ effortless…

Dron is not kidding!! He can do an effortless roll cast on grass and it’s pretty obvious he would be able to roll it even further with water to anchor the line! what a difference a day makes!

Some photos from the first day

Peter teaching the dynamics of a proper roll cast. hold, hold, hold, hold, pop !

Casting with the tip of your fly rod!!

Peter says that a good roll cast is the most important and useful cast you could learn. True… but I think most would agree that learning the gaya aspects of fly fishing is just as important!! Peter taught us plenty of tricks to impress the girls too, the guy certainly knows our priorities in life, haha!!

Learning to tie some fast and useful knots

Magic!

and then the heavens opened and the rain came pouring down. Peter has never seen a tropical storm before. I think he’s impressed by the force of our rain!

after the storm has passed, it’s back to the field for more casting instructions

that’s Dron casting a smooth loop. Man, watch the line go, just sweet!!

A practice drill for our two aspiring samurais!

Thank you Dron for organizing this Clinic!

It was excellent and awesome! We learn a lot from Peter. In fact many has improve in their casting and doing new things from their fly rods. Now, got no problem to roll cast out 50"-60" with one hand casting. We get to know what was our weaknesses in our casting and how to improve it. Peter was really good in his teaching and showing the right moves. He is an excellent and good looking instructor. Would love to see him again next year. I would definitely join again if there is another Peter Hayes’ Fly Casting Clinic.

We all had a great time and good fun too!

Yes, Peter is a friendly guy and a great teacher… his enthusiasm and the way he taught the many tecniques of flycasting was very clear and what we learned was PRICELESS… only wish many more of our fly fishos could have attended. Many thanks Peter … and Dron and gang for organizing it. Betcha Malaysian flyfishing went up many notches after the last 3 days.[:D]

<><ICHTUS><>

It was a fantastic weekend I’ve had for years. I cannot imagine any other instructors from America or Europe could do like what he did. He’s unique. His vast knowledge in fly casting (and trout fishing)is legendary but practical. How I wish we had trout in Malaysia. Apart from that it was the other human side of him that impressed me most i.e. his personal experience, anecdotes and sense of humor were simply and utterly out of this world, as if I was listening to Lefty Kreh. But it was classic Haysie!

Talking about Lefty, Peter had also gone to learn from him, and not just him others as well like Joan Wulf, Horsey and other well known figures in FF. From all these and his 35 years experience you have what Peter Hayes has now.

I give you an example, on the technicality of casting most of us could only break up things into 3 or 4 steps, but Peter could dissect (yes you heard it right, DISSECT) a cast into 100 pieces. He said he was an engineer but I was not sure wether he was pulling our legs or what. An engineer does not behave like that, I believe he was a kindergarten teacher once, and a very good one with kids.[:p]

He has the knowledge, gift of the bloody gab, absolute utter passion and boundless effing energy for us the whole weekend, Marvellous!

But I got him once while demonstrating and explaining the roll cast: was under pressure could not answer anymore of his questions I simply said : ME NO SPEKIN’ ENGLISH…[}:)] He buckled.

Pete, thanks so much for your time. I promise you if we ever go to fish Tasmania next year and stay at your lodge, I would cook for you!</font id=“maroon”>

Me no spekin English!!

Damn, that was a good one! Peter didn’t see that coming at all, really funny! It was a miracle how Tok Mi could suddenly speak perfect english on the next question, HaHa!

So, you think you’re good, and all those fancy rods are somehow going to make you a better caster… Think Again!

Peter brought along this piece of gadgetry developed by Bruce Richards for the Sage rod company which cost $3K i think. It measures your cast on many different planes, gives you a detailed analysis from your arc angle to the symmetry of your forward and backward cast, and compares them against an ideal set of conditions pre-established by the best casters on planet fly-fish. How crap your casting really is becomes apparent instantaneously…

this was obviously an invaluable tool for analyzing your stroke and making effective on the spot changes to improving your tempo, SLP, power application, and etc.

After the first days casting was over, Doc and his lovely wife Fiona, had Pete and me over for a sumptuos dinner. Thanks for the beer and wine Doc!

Great fun u have there, guys. Wished I was there… really. Thanks to Petey who’ve made miles of journey for one truly noble cause. Salute, Sir Petey…!

Just in case Peter wont be making his way thru here soon enough, no fret now coz I will always have Dron, Tok Mie, Dennis, Andrew, Sir Tony…etc to teach me the tips & tricks to better casting. Thanks in advance, guys…!

Really, you should have been there bro. I’m sure the guys who attended the clinics would be more than happy to pass on what they’ve learnt. However, it’s just not the same because Peter, besides being a great teacher, is one heck of a funny guy and there is never a dull moment. Like the fly fish golf games he introduced, you learn and have fun.

The best thing of all on top of learning so much is that Peter has offered those who attended the clinics one weeks FREE STAY at his fishing lodge in Tasmania!! YIPEEEE!! Peter showed me some great photos of fishing spots. Man! Tasmania is one of the world’s premier trout fishing destinations and here we get to stay free and get guided by Australia’s best! We don’t even have to bring waders and boots as he can lend them to us.

I reckon bringing Peter here was the most brilliant thing we could have done! We did the maths last night and the savings is significant. If you can go to Maldives, you should be able to afford Tasmania now!

Of course, conditions are we have to do our own groceries and cook for Peter as well, which we would be more than happy to do so if he can put up with our cooking!

Zango,

What I’ve learned over the weekend is more than what I have learn from other so called ‘master’ in the past few years. Peter does not hold back on what he knows. He is very open of what he knows and more than willing to show you his theories and methods of every single casts in the clearest explanation and best presentation possible. Some of us threw in some challenge to his methods and ideas. He took them very well and is able to sort of agree to disagree. He does not insists he is always right. His openess in sharing ideas makes him different from the rest.

Honestly, he was teaching us most of things that we already knew. But knowing and actually understand and doing are very different animals. And we put ourselves to the ‘knowing, understand and doing’ test over the weekend. In some areas we did quite well, like distance casting for example. But we did terrible in accuracy and so so only in presentation.

He show us our limitations, drills to correct them and the best way to show others to understand the ‘literature’ behind each casts or drills. And he throw in some pratical fishing tips along the way. And many jokes too. He show us what he thinks is style and what he thinks is substance. His method of teaching is trully world class. That, bro, sad to say, none of us here are capable to match Peter. Not yet anyway.

Aparahlu, you’ve missed the chance to maximise from all the expensive equipment that you’ve bought. [:D] And I want you to feel ashame of yourself. He he he he… But don’t worry, I think he will be back.

Fly Fishing means using artificial flies.
Baitfishing = fishing with bait
