Just to widen my knowledge on fly fishing in Malaysia… I saw several species inside the forum. Perhaps it is possible to line up a nice list on what kind of fish takes the fly well in your fresh waters. Perhaps it is possible to include them with picture and with, Malay, English and the latin name of the species as well. I am sure you have species that really go well on dry flies and others perhaps only possible to catch on nymphs or streamer only?
I would love to know this including the area’s where those fish are native. That will prevent me for a lot frustrations next time I visit your wonderful country.
Hans
Hi Hans,
Nice surprise to see you in MFN. The majority of the fishes mentioned here can be caught with dries and nymphs (except for the snakeheads and peacock bass especially when they are big). But don’t discount the streamers as there has been some surprise catches on them as well (big fish especially).
Hi Sifu Hans,The Malayan mahseer or Red Kelah is found in the rivers flowing into Kenyir lake in Trengganu. In Sabah they, the Pelian, are found in the rivers of Penampang District near Kota Kinabalu. However the rivers are protected by the villagers under the Tagal system and you need to get permission from the headman or Tok Batin or the fisheries dept.in order to fish them. Two good rivers are the Babagon and Kiulu rivers. The speed and power of the Kelah is legendary and only the best tackle can be used to land them. One of the best guides i know for Red Kelah is Jerry Cheong ,also my friend Darrell from Adelaide who has caught one on fly.For further info Nick OOi of Tacklebox Adventures ,Tel: +60356370268 may be able to help you.The pelian and kelah can be caught on dry flies and salmon egg flies. Also depends on what they eat, like frogs and fish imitations.Cheers.
The Toman is a very fearsome fish and has been known to kill small animals and also humans by ramming into them with it’s very hard head, causing internal injuries and capable of tearing flesh and biting off limbs with it’s sharp teeth and powerful jaws.Beware.
Hi Guys… since we have been talking about our local fresh water fishes… can we also talk about the local and effective flies patterns for our local fresh water fishes…
As you can see… everyone is too shy to post their pattern here… so the pattern for species information at the moment is still pretty low… but nevertheless, when you fish with them next year, they will show you what best flies to use…
