Irrespective of whoever, many freshwater anglers are crazy or fanatic about haruan. Why so? I mean casting for haruan is actually quite a pain considering you have to go traverse snags, muds, palm oil estates, meet snakes, mosquitoes, cut yourself through lalangs and a whole lot of s****.
You dressed up in your worst! Mismatched coloured clothing, rubber boots and a big construction straw hat. Why are you fascinated by this fish which can’t even give you a long fight like the kelah or sebarau. Yes, you still go!
Why?
Regards,
Vincent

Apart fishing this haruans for food have you ever think that how many benefited from it, due to th heal properties. How many injured flesh heals. I don’t deny that this is the most abused fish in our waters.
I would advise fish with conservation, that is c&r.
i personally think it’s becoz they give a good fight… maybe not as good as the above said kelah and sebarau… but haruan spots can be found basically everywhere if compared to sebarau and kelah spots… therefore due to this factor, i think that is why ppl prefer to go for haruan…
summary as to why im crazy about haruan fishing:
1)good fight
2)haruan spots can be found more easily than sebarau and kelah spots
3)can be eaten
4)obstacles=more challenge=boost alter ego
5)my uncles(sifu’s) all haruan fanatics
6)my first fish caught was haruan- virginity broken by it… so sure got effect one…
I only fish on 3 days: yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
i only craze for haruan casting about the last two years. before that, i fish haruan mostly just like i fish puyu… a joran, 5 ft of tali tangsi cap ayam, a no. 8 hook and some cacings. that’s it and i’m all set. then i found the rod and reel method, although i still pity the katak and have somebody else put them to sleep and hook them… still has plenty of markah kesian for them.
now, other than bottoming at the nearest river or disused mine pool or paid pool, i cast for haruan every opportunity i got, morning or afternoon or even both. i just love casting for them even though i didn’t catch as many as i hope to, i just like it. it is also my method of exercising. my usual attire would be a windbreaker over a t shirt and a pair of nylon ‘adidas’ trackbottom. i prefer the nylon types because they don’t pick up the kemuncups and all that stuff that stuck to your pants and pain in the arse picking them later. and my cowboy hat, sometimes. with this attire i will perspire like crazy from walking in the boondocks, and guess what? i lost almost 8 kilos the last month or so. during my crazy binge before puasa last year, i lost 12 but they came back, with a vengence.
i also love those little and big tugs when haruans struck. i can’t explain the feelings when i saw those arrowhead ripples, sometime more than 2 or three when they go for my katak. whether the haruan hookups or not, i’m the one who got hooked

Dressing up shabbily and looking your ugliest, wading thro mud, being eaten up by leeches, getting hung up on snags, mozzies, snakes, cuts…
It all adds up to the Xcitement…I wud say that it’s not just the fishing that is interesting [;)]
Why You asked Vince??? I cant answer that but I am crazy of casting haruans too. I guess the answers can be found in all the above postings. But I have never used live frogs and dont know how too (no offence to pacman and others)since I was little the only way to catch haruans wwas with a few metres of tali tangsi dont know what chap also, wrapped araound a milo or dutchlady milk can with a chrome spoon and a treble hook, that was it. If lost a spoon can curi from dapur emak a makan spoon and cut the handle bore 2 holes tied the treble with some wire fron the clothesline and back in business. And half a decade later I am still hunting for my first 2 kg haruans - can someone help me to find them…

Let us go to Muda Dam when the time is correct. Haruans are king and act like toman there!![}:)]
Bro Sild…where’s Muda Dam???..also want to fight with Bagak-bagak haruan…hehehheh..count me in…
Its on the way to Pedu in Kedah. The haruan are really bagak bagak.I landed a 2.8kg one sometime back using a red Cultiva. It is reported that they are still bagak and the best time to go will be during the low water season
Wow 2.8kg? man that is huge! I’ve seen 2kgs, but never caught any before though.. I love fishing for haruans maybe because i grew up fishing them.. i fished them almost everyday during my teens and easily available everywhere.. But i use cicak usually, later on only to katak and now on sp.. Still hunting for my 1st Kerandang and Bujuk..
I have caught a 5.2kg and a 6kg. one before. Fight like toman lb. for lb. rare you can find these sizes. 2-3kg nemberous until lost count. Too bad no photo. The next time sure to pose photo of those mama.

that size aarr…very big..[:0][:0]
next time pls bring camera along…[;)]
for me, its like an ultimate challenge :
getting to the area where u can cast
casting into/over/beyond those snagy area and not getting snag
seeing the haruan dashing out from nowhere to whack yr bait
the explosive reaction of haruan when u strike
trying to stop it from rushing back into snag
preventing it from getting stuck to any other snag along the way when u bring it in
most time, doing all the above standing in awkward places trying to balance yourself at the sametime

Those sizes are very rare nowadays, congrats on being able to land them…at least we know that they still exist.
Those in the Muda dam were taken in open waters when the level was low.I caught mine during a drizzle and like you said…they fight real hard, just like the toman.
jaswon? serious or not… 5.2 and 6 kg? fuhh la mak… syok giler la… nowadays.. i consider myself extremely leucky if i can land a haruan averaging at a kati…
