I agree with you. There has been a positive shift in the anglers attitude towards CNR especially the new fishos who are exposed to fishing magazines. The more they read the more they are influenced to be ethical fisho, of course not all got educated. Sometimes it depends on the quality of their fishing partners, those people who dont practice CNR always laugh at the behaviour of a fisho who practices CNR and only bring enough for consumption, like"ooi gila ka?, why come so far, spent so much money, yet release the fish?" At the end our fisho friend got intimidated and brought back some fish even when he didnt want too.
This process takes time, time and education are our allies. We need to keep the momentum. Nobody said it was easy.
For the past one year, I had been actively practising CnR ( Catch n Release not Catch n Relocate to kitchen/wok/to die). Even I go to normal paypond, I also released back the fish even it can be bring back home…Those day I hang it out to other angler, now no more passing around.
Enjoy the fishing process… including fish borrowed for photoshot…
Actually CNR should be practiced for species which face fishing pressure or extinction. The fish in the commercial paypond you can bring back for dinner as they are breedable and restocked all the time. It is o.k to bring back one or two so you can show the wife as a proof you spent three hours at the pond instead of karaoke, he.he.he. If not you will also become extinct when the wife suspect something funny.
Off course, another reason not to bring back is the quality of the flesh which tastes muddy, which is also a good excuse to the wife! he..he
Is there even a survey of fish populations (electro-sampling etc..) for any particular bodies of water in Malaysia? you know, like one done regularly by us fisheries (or is it fish & game?) dept…
Without the necessary statistics, how can anyone even propose catch release/bag limit/slot limit regulations?

Bro, I practised CnR wherever I go, at least can show and educate others angler the way. Some angler complain but after chat with them, they all agreed, at least the fish can grow up become biggiess. No need to bring back the fish ( it shall die of suffocation ). Nowdays I just use camera phone to shot the photos together with my tools, I also wear “apek” cloth to go fishing and only RM 100…

"there is no harm taking what you need but do not take what you dont need".then the enviroment is enough for everybody. do not be greedy.
perhaps a stand alone topic instead of slotting/filing away under Conservation would see more people view/respond
it starts with self, which stems from education
unfortunately, our gomen is trash, hence education for the masses and ensuing ENFORCEMENT is out, since everyone wants to be little napoleons
ergo, it’s up to US to educate our fishing mates, operators and perhaps even help them keep track or map the trends … but results/readings can’t be seen overnight
if we can teach/urge/encourage others to follow what some US/Oz state govts do for abalone:
a) licence/permit
b) specific catch measurements, if too small/juvey, release; too big, also release for propagation of future generations
Unfortunately, this boils down to enforcement again.
Our recent Aug Temenggor trip, I sounded off one of me mates for wanting to keep another 1.5-2kg toman as we all ready have a 2-2.2kg toman in hand.
His response: only 1 or 2; 2 or 3 mah …
My response: Halo, how many anglers coming here in a month, a year and how big is the group? Say 5 a group and everyone nets 2-3, how many would that be? How mcuh would that add up in a month, a year?
Member not happy, but i couldn’t be bothered. Clowns wouldn’t even listen when told to put the fish down instead of hauling it up by the hook/line.
Boils down to self:
i release all juveys; fish for fun, try to get decent table size if i want/need to, big mommas released so that future generations have a hope.
There is NO 2 ways about it, ie the other side can argue all they want about THEIR catch, their right, about not imposing another’s will on them - this ain’t bout imposing wills, but sustainability.
Only blinkered, moronic, selfish jerks insist otherwise.
Oh, and i say 12-gauge double barrel or serrated hunting broad head the netters.
