They are not called Armoured catfish for nothing! Scientific name of Plecostomus. These guys actually burrow into the banks of lake or river to make their “nest” therefore causing erosion, siltation etc.
Another point I would like to add about carps; they devour the weeds and grass on the river/lake beds and therefore destroying the habitats for fish and other crustaceans to lay their eggs!

That is one way of looking at things, but the problem is that these fisherman had taken everything else as well. they started by taking out the haruan, then the toman, Pbs, jaguars and now finally nothing.
I do remember that PeMM at one time released about 30 1kg sized tomans from Dengkil into the jogging pond at Subang Park. The very next day, there was a buzz at a tackle shop that there are tomans sighted and the whole horde went there. within the week, there were no more tomans.
Weh weh wat’s with all the sifu sifu… me still novice angler la see signature below??? still learning la much to be learned, forummer like ek and rr bro etc are those genuine sifus around heheh dun be mistaken lol
anyway i always think tat experience is one of the most important aspect in this issue, something tat even education couldnt replace. sadly nowadays ppl couldnt really experience wat its like before, never hav the chance to be ‘independent’, no need to hav foreign fish for dinner or restaurant, no need to be dependent on foreigner to entertaint your hook, no illegal imigrant to pop on your lures… how many can experience the pure malaysian angling experience nowadays? let alone the environment. For me i;m lucky to hav experience most part of it, altho minute in timespan, but the influence is great. you simply learn to appreciate more when you have actually been there, and done that… to be able to treasure, you must at least hav a feel for it, a sense of identity to it… or else why some ppl can just cast their abu island into snaggy waters while others will **** their pants out just to cast it in a swimming pool.
Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you
the problem is simple and twofold the way i see it… the first part is education… i’d say 1 in 10 anglers know anything bout conservation and the environment… maybe even less then that number have heard of PeMM… i know of many people who cant tell the difference between local and foreign species…
the next and bigger problem is attitude… first of, most people dont care about being educated on these issues because to them, all this conservation stuff is just either bull**** or useless… 9 out of 10 people will blame everything else before themselves when something goes wrong… this attitude applies to fishing too… then there is the standard response of “im only one person, if i practice conservation also wat difference can i make?”… second and more dangerous still is the attitude of some people who just believe its a mans world and we can do whatever the hell we like with it… how many of us know people who believe that as long as they have caught something, they have the rite to do whatever they want with it?.. i have ‘educated’ friends who fish with me who refuse to go to CnR payponds because they cant take back what they catch… wats the point they ask?.. a friend of mine once said to me that when he catches his first toman he will keep it… i asked him why?.. after all it isnt a good eating fish and he doesnt even have a place to possibly rare it… he said “yea but it would be my first toman so im keeping it no matter what”… what bout releasing it to fight another day?.. he said “wats the point? Someone else will just catch it and take it home”… till this day i have yet to convince my friends otherwise inspite of providing them with all the worrying facts… and these are so called ‘educated’ people…

Kevin, NEVER GIVE UP! That’s the only way to make this fraternity be aware of the predicament our fisheries are in. If you cant get through to “A” then get to work on “B” and “C”. When done, get back to “A”!
Occasionally, you get to know guys like TJS and you will find that it is all worthwhile!
Even SP has matured and changed. He used to be this kid who boasted on catching whale sharks and arapaimas on MFN.
Now he is conscious of the need for C&R and protection of the environment and local species!
i wont give up… every week i try to drag a few of them to the nearest CnR paypond to experience the thrill of catching a fish and then letting it go to fight another day… also have been taking my younger brother and cousins with me for the same purpose… they at least seem more willing to accept these ideas… i think the key is to start on them young la… it may not be impossible to teach an old dog new tricks but hell it sure is harder… lol…

It does not matter if only 1 in 10 had ever heard of PeMM. What matters is that, there are dedicated members within PeMM that trully believe in their cause.
Do take heart that those who take all are usually the same who later complains that there are no more fish.

…and it is time that all anglers be as dedicated if they are they are to enjoy fishing 10-12 years down the line! Otherwise, Malaysia would just be some dumping ground where all kinds of non-indigenous fish can be found.
So, what’s so special about fishing in Malaysia? What makes us stand out from other countries? How is our sport going to grow?
Anyone tried for Pacu at the boating pond at CWS. Some years ago, while fishing from a canoe rented from the boating club there, we landed some 10kg pacu there. That pond is linked to other ponds and the canoe can easily take 3 persons.
The A week after the 4lbs peacock bass trip,I decided that 4lbs line was nothing and I should try 2lbs line (0.9 kgs).My grandfather was free on that saturday and he offered to bring me fishing at CWS.The baits was the usual live gold coloured carps and I tried Spin-fliyng.After registering at the fishing clubhouse,i cast my live carp on spiderman rig. Before i could tie my spin fly rig,my reel was croaking (mesin katak maaa…).The first victim was landed on 2lbs line.
Then coming back to the spin-flying,it was effective without doubt but the problem was that the hooks were too small and not sharp enough as i was using the hooks from the cheap appolo rigs. One cast, one bite, one mishap…this was the story for 10 or so bites, after that i switch back to the live carps on 2lbs line and spiderman rig.
The technique was to completely drain the fish of all its strength without snagging the lotus.A few fish were like half dead from fighting and suddenly sprint into the louts and snag there. After 2 fish and countless mishaps,I move to the wetlands where there were sizeable fish and less lotus.
The first place was at the fishing platform.Hooked a fish before the bait even fall to the bottom.First i set my drag to the maximum to pull it to the side of the platform which is clear or any snags and then wear it out.The fish took about 4 minutes and then it was floating.I put it in my stringer and it didn’t move. The fish fainted or what happened i dont know…
The second place was the spawning grounds at the edge ot the wetlands. This place has many weeds in the bottom so i used a float rig and hooked a baby carp. There was a solid hook up and the fish was running. After a few minutes it was a grander (there are more granders there because its the spawning ground). The second fish was also hooked using the same menthod and it too was a grander. The weather was not good and my grandpa was scolding me because I was fishing non stop and he asked me to go home and take rest.So I left the place.
Rod,reel and line as proof of purchase muahahahaha[:D][:D]Cigarette box as for comparison.
Man Beast and weapon…
The three biggest fish of the trip.

Their parents are at the middle of the pond which i need a boat to go there, the rental is too much for me bro[:D]…but they bring their kids walking at the nearby shore so i got a chance to catch them and test my tackle…
When I save up,I will go for their grandpa and parents…but look at the bright side,at least these kids wont have a chance to pass their seeds..
