Ben,
You’re right mate !! Anything and everything can go wrong in a wild area. Never under estimate a toman or sebaraus sudden run and head shake. IF you find toman’s in kenyir are aggresive. Then you should make a trip to either Air Ganda/Bersia (nothern Perak) for the tomans which stays up their reputation as an “ecstatic toman”
This tomans are has crazy strength and those big once has the tendency to feel like its snag to something but literally these tomans just pause and being stationary at one place. This place is filled with snags and with good maneuver or rod (of course rod ratings frm 10-20 should do the job) and boatman will enable you to land. The most crucial part in fishing is the landing stage, what ive realize is that, they get really spook out seeing sunlight/shadow/angler once they surface and this species has extreme strength till its last fight. Therefore, play the fish right and tire it in a correct manner is important. Likewise, sometimes there are no hard rules in fishing.
Agree that in the wild, you should at least have 2 pairs of outfit for back up. Nitro will do the job well but like what you’ve mention, it has its limits in the taper of the arc. The last 2 trips in Kenyir was considered to be so so, but i reckon the amount of fish being landed during your trip there was rather very poor. But alas, its nature and depending what you are targeting. My trip in mid year, produce fantastic results with lotsa decent size toman landed, lost a big green kelisa, heaps of sebaraus, one 6-7kg featherback, small baungs,a 2kg+ kelah landed on a ultralight rod on a 2lbs !! (unbelievable..huh..believe it) and tonnes of lampam..That was a fantastic trip.
no worries ben, you’ve have the chance but try to make it ASAP !! Fishing spots are like newly discovered island. One day it will decline
once an angler, always an angler
