My take on this is landing net + lip grip to avoid unnecessary injuries to both fish and angler. Once landed on boat or land then switch to lip grip for photo taking or removing hooks.

You are right brother.

That is the most ideal way of handling a green fish.

my thought(newbies): if one have the capacity to carry the net, than its the best… if u need to carry limited item such as when ur trekking in jungle/streams or any dificult areas then lip grip is much more convenience… its not about the lip grip/nett but about the convenience, thats why i think the lip grip was invented…

I find it convinient and safer using lip grip eventhough there are some advantage using a net..however unhooking and to avoid unneccessary tail waging by the fish, lip grip is safer..

U dun fish; then how u know got no fish!

I have seen lip grips and landing nets being used. I could honestly say lip grips no matter how good could never beat a good landing net.
Of course if you compare cheapo landing nets which everyone is using against a rm400 lip grip, it is bloody unfair.
The landing nets with huge ass mesh damages the fish when it struggles and the ones with the smaller mesh might be a little troublesome when hooks get stuck into it but is still way better for the fish.
The best option is to get those landing nets that could act as a unhooking mat too. Those without mesh but looks more like a huge plastic bag. If you got the money they could be disassembled and are as portable as a lip grip. So for the same price a landing net always wins. Always.

LLY - any idea where I ca see such a net in KL ? - Thanks.

I don’t think they sell nets like those in Malaysia. Order them online. I know they sell those in Australia though. Try googling for environet half mesh. Its around rm150(AUD50) the last time I saw it.

seems the environet mesh net is by shimano http://www.shimanofish.com.au/publish/content/global_fish/en/au/index/products/accessories/Environets.html

prices range from AUD30+ to AUD99

they also have bragmats which i think is good … dual purpose for me
wish stuff like these is available and is cheaper here
