Well done guys, you look like having a great time in Babagon.
Two photos raised my curiosity:
The first one is this sign. From what it’s written in this sign, you can’t fish in there. If you do you, you will put yourself in all sort of serious troubles. How can you fish in there, do you have a special permission to fish. Or “CATCH AND RELEASE” regarded as “NOT Menangkap Ikan” ???

The second one is this photo:
Is this a fingerling fish from a hatchery? Do “Jabatan Perikanan Sabah” stock the river with a hatchery fish?
Or the fisheries at Moyog River is self sustained.

Great photos guys, thanks for sharing.

to bro Bintoro,
for the first photo, actually if they caught you fishing there without permission from Chief of TAGAL system (Mr William for Kampung Babagon river), you’ll be fined as stated on the warning board (as the picture shown, for sure a very serious trouble to find 50kg of the ‘bulldozer’ )… So, to fish there, you have to inform them earlier. Then they can let you fish there with any fishing guide from their Kampung with some token to be charged to you.. If I’m not mistaken, RM50 token for 1day fishing including fishing guide.. this token is some sort of business for their kampung and they will use some of this money to take care the river..(sorry for my bad type writing and please correct me if my info was wrong)
and for the second photo,
those fish in the picture are not from hatchery, those fishes caught by those who fish there and I’ve been informed by mr Paulus that any fish weigh more than 300g will be taken (harvested), and also if you want to bring back the fish, they will weigh your catch and charge you RM??/KG(not sure how much it cost per KG,sorry..hehehe)
I’ve caught 4 of those fish 2 days before Otai’s group came, I’ve been informed that they will give some to the VIPs who will attend National Museum Festival held at the Babagon river bank (at the same place that Otai’s group fishing).
hope your curiosity don’t kill you… heheheee..
Thanks for the insight arado_romus,
Great to see the folk in there taking care of their river. It is very nice to see a river so beautiful, teeming with fish so close to human habitat when many rivers around the world deteriorating, polluted, choked with rubbish (particularly plastic bags & bottles) and overfished. I hope they keep up the good work for many more years to come and set up a good example for other to take care of their rivers.

Hi Nick, great catch!! Very nice Kelah! Is that one of your fly?
I love to know how’s this fish fight? Does it fight hard, jump, go deep, run down or upstream?
How do you fish your nymph, dead drift or swing the fly down and across? Do you use strike indicator?
Thanks,

Hi Bintoro,
Sungai Moyog is one of the river in Sabah that run under the ‘Tagal’ system ( certain part of the river )… an idea of local people adopting the river and managing the river ( Pengurusan dan pemuliharaan sumber ikan sungai melalui penglibatan masyarakat setempat )… years before the ‘Tagal’ was introduce by the Sabah Fishery Dept… most river in Sabah was either polluted, over fish, poison, bomb, dumped with rubbish…
In ‘Tagal’ system… the villages are encourage to adopt a portion of the river, they take care of the river, ‘farming’ and feeding the fish, become the ‘eye’ of Fishery dept and each year, they are allowed to harvest the fishes once… and these income will eventually help the villages…
Today.. there are 394 Tagal in Sabah… some allow to fish ( with conditions ), some open for tourist to feed & swim with fish, some totally no entry.
Babagon, is one of the village that run under a ‘Tagal’ system… since year 2001.
They have manage to revive the population of Pelian in the river, next to the village..locate the feeding station which belongs to the Fishery Dept ( a no entry area, those who caught enter this portion of the river will ‘get in trouble’… )
After years of farming… in 2004, 1st group of Fly fishermen was invited to fish at the river… fees were charged and these income further improve the living standard of the villages… you will need to seek the approval from the head of the village to fish there, with only one condition… only Catch and Release
Pelian… the Golden Masheer, claim by the local can grow up to 30-40kgs… due to over fish and pollution… Today, a 5kgs are consider rare… if we can revive the river and really take care of it…one day, the Pelians will come back… fisherman will fly in from whole world to ‘pay’ to fish them…

100% agreed with you bro. Hope that one day there will be more place for us (amateur fly-fisher) to sharpen our loops and reflexes especially in peninsular area too. Love to bring my little kids playing in the cool clean and clear water with a great view while enjoying my fishing again so I get 2 in 1, family and my hobby..

Pak Dron.fly,
I’ve heard my friend said that they will provide a chalet with a very reasonable cost to anybody who come to fish there with only RM15/person. If I’m not mistaken the new wooden building on the other side of the river bank..(sometimes my ears heard a wrong words also or misunderstood because my friend talk too fast..hehehehe)…

Yes… the wooden building is the chalet… RM15 per head per night… very nice, can cook there too…
The best thing is… at curi curi pancing at night… hehehehe… ( just joking…)
Thanks Dron and ardo-romus
The old philosophy “Nobody want to throw rubbish in their own home or backyard” obviously working extremely well.
Once a community have the sense of belonging, they will take care as their own.
heard that another group from Singapore went there too after KL group. Maybe Pak Amin group..dunno la.. hehehee… actually I really want to join them to learn more about fly fishing but unfortunately I only got a very limited time in Penampang, so I spent time with my family for their satisfaction.. manyak lugi lohhh for my fly-fishing but I’m very happy that my family enjoyed their time in KK town ..
