Hi Bro BigBite 88,
Your children will be very happy fishing with you in future, they will be blessed with yr equipment for sure.
My children don’t seem to enjoy fishing at all now, even though my young one once pulled up a siakap of 2 plus kilo on his own when he was 5 years old shouting for help thru out, amusing everyone near him. Unfortunately no photo taken.

hi bro maguro,i hope that will happen in the near future.you know, kids these days often neglect their parents when they grow older.so i guess one of the best way to make them stay close to you when you’re older is through fishing [:D]

You hit the bull eye. Excellent suggestion.
Sifu Maguro, in my opinion, we should let our children go their own way.. just like the parent haruan let go their offspring at its appropriate time, Our duties is to give them the best academic qualification and let them fend for their own. Though we reluctantly watch from the side..Don't expect too much from them when we are old and when every step we took is a torture,, we know our biological time is near. Our big brother up there will mark the attendance.
One problem i am facing in taking my son out for a good time in fishing. The places I go to with all my keen anglers are not very suitable places for kids of 8 years old. These places are quite rough. It is also not easy to fish in these areas. If I take him out, I have to ensure that he catches a fish and the interest in fishing will surely swell. Being young and new in this game, the kids expect to catch fish if we go fishing. In fact all kids/wifes expect that. But if he does not get any fish, I am so afraid that he may be discourage and drop the fishing hobby idea totally. So, I am in a dilemma. What to do??? Maybe anyone out there has a good place - safe and easy to catch - don’t mind paying money just to cultivate the interest for my son.
Dear Mr. Slimfish, pay pond will be the best place for kids..both saltwater and freshwater will be fine since the percentage of hooking the fish is better (hopefully) and it is more comfortable for them.
“Ongkos takdek, ati mau mancing jugak, pakai murah-murah je lah jadiknya…he..he..he..”
Also try fishing with a float and bait rather than bottom fishing with bait or lure fishing. A float gives kids something visual to focus on. My son will watch a float for quite a while before he gets bored, but soon looses interest in a bottom fished bait or a lure that doesn’t catch a fish a throw. Fish don’t have to be big. Scale back the tackle and use tiny hooks and catch small tilapia or flowerhorns.
Don’t force him/her to fish and try to share the experience with them, which means you also float fish for small tilapia too. Probably better not to make kids trips a “hard core” trip with your usual buddies as none of you will probably enjoy it.
As the natural desire to accumulate fishing tackle and go on more adventurous trips develops, you could try a bit of lure fishing with soft plastics (kids love these baits!) for haruan or perhaps lures for PB’s, but try and make it easy for them to catch their target fish, even if the fish are tiny.
Here’s Andrew fighting a 3kg Patin, which he landed. Looks a real handful doesn’t it? He caught a few more that day too and still talks about it.
here’s my Aminin..I cast, he held the rod & reels in, I striked & he posed…he.he.he
he’s now itchy to get into the new etamax 12’ boat…gotta find a suitabe lifejacket for him now..he.he.he

You guys are fantastic guys showing me the children reeling in fish - what an action! I am now more determined to get him out there to experience the first hook up.
Marlin, where is this fishing pond when Andrew hooked up the 3kg Patin?
Hi Bro Kenchen,
Learn from all our grandsifu here, hopefully when we can’t bring fresh fish for the family any more, they will continue to do so when the time comes.[:)][:)]

bedong fishing park will be a good place to poison your child [:D] with the safe surrounding and the one-cast-one-catch rate, your child will definitely ask you to bring him/her over and over again.go to the mini pond and ask the caretaker for the dead bait fish.cut them into tiny chunks then do bottom fishing with it.good luck! Dear Marlin, An old Chinese man once told me…“If you give a fish to a man, you will have to give him fish for the rest of his life. However, if you teach him how to fish, then you do not have to feed him for the rest of his life”
I am going to teach my son how to fish today with Sifu Maguro. Hopefully, by doing that I will not have to feed him for the rest of his life, BUT he can also in return feed me for the rest of my life!!!
It is a good investment.
Just wish to share with you the joy of going fishing with my son. We went with a group of my fishing friends last night. He was all excited about it. But unfortunately the fish pond (at Klang)we intented to go was closed. So, we have to change plan and moved to another pond near Kesas Highway. Drove from Klang but because of the traffic the journey was a bit long and my son slept all the way.
When we reached the place he was still excited and we started fishing. One and half hour passed and no bite. So, he “kacau kacau” to go home instead. It was quite late 10.30pm, normally he sleeps at 9.30am and the next day he has to go to school. In the last minute, one of the fishing “kaki” had a hooked up and it was nice for him to pass the rod to my son to feel the reeling in a fish. Well, all excited and ready with camera but unfortunately the fish got away! On the way home, I asked him if he is sad losing the fish. The answer was…“well, happy and sad…” Would you like to go fishing with daddy again? The answer was…“YES!”
I think he has got the excitement and would like to take him out again. He told the mother and sister all about it. BUT I would like to thank all my friends last night for being so understanding with my motive… Thanks Sifu Maguro, En Mat, Taufik and most of all the mate who passed the rod with hooked up fish to my son…Thank you
Dear Bro Kenchen, do not be dismayed if your son does not share your interest. He is as special as any son to the father. Being in books are also very encouraging. I may say I wish my son would love to be in the book shop. Therefore, if we start to compare, it will only bring unpleasant competition thereby encourage dissatisfaction.
Hi Bro Kenchen,
Look like your son will provide you fish from the market in future whereas Bro Slim’s son will get them fresh from the water. Freshness will be the only difference maybe.
Each and every person is special. The fish from market and fresh water are food and provide protein for our human consumption. So, life must go on… Where is our next target place for haruans???
The fish in our wild waters are a resource to be used wisely. Why must we always think of them as food? If each and every person is special and we intend to pass down a love of angling to our children, its time we started thinking about what sort of fisheries our children are inheriting from us. Heaven forbid that I teach my son to fish so that he can keep me supplied with fresh fish when I’m too old to catch them myself! That isn’t going to work, because unless we teach our children something different, there will be no fish left by then anyway.
Some of the wild places I fish have declined enormously in just the time I have been in Malaysia. Less fish, more nets and set lines, more and more evidence of human encroachment and trash left everywhere. The trash always contains angling related packaging - hooks, swivels, lures - which tells me that at least in part (if not in whole), anglers are responsible for this terrible decline. We are not looking after our natural resources like we should.
Several anglers passed me during a visit to one of these more out of the way places this weekend. All of them carried gunny sacks. If anglers can carry gunny sacks into the jungle to bring back whatever they catch, perhaps they should also consider bringing back their trash as well. There might still be no fish for our children to catch in the future, but at least the natural beauty of these wild places will last a little longer.
My son didn’t catch our targeted species this weekend. But he does know he must bring all his trash home with him. He saw first hand why he needs to do this. And I was ashamed of the legacy we are passing on to our children.
