Haruan for Kids?

Bull’s eye, Marlin. If all we want in life is to have our child telling us all sorts of white fruit stories and plenty of them. The damages is done and my only love is dying, where do i head to? I don’t want to die telling white fruit stories…

The saying…“If you give a fish to a man…feed him for the rest of his life” is an old Chinese which does not really mean what it says. In every poem, there is always a deeper meaning to it. To my understanding, “fishing” in this context here really means making/earning a living. It really means, you do not want to keep passing money to a person to support him for the rest of his life, you simply want to help him to learn the art of self supporting by teaching him how to earn a living when he/she is capable to cultivate it. I hope we all understand what the writer was trying to say.
On the issue of depleting fish in many ponds, that I must say is a sad story. I can only say the enforcement in Malaysia is just not good enough to ensure the smaller fish are protected and be allowed to grow to adult size. However, thank goodness, I can still see many responsible anglers in Malaysia, where C&R (catch & release) is becoming more acceptable and well practised. I hope all anglers who are reading this will adopt the practise/habit to release the undersized fish. We can only do our small part to preserve this sport, if the enforcement is weak.
In addition, the rapid development throughout Malaysia is also contributing to the dissapearance of the fishing ponds. This is the sacrifice we have to accept in the name of development.
On another thought, if we are really conscious about the welfare of the fish (and natural resources), my friend said that hooking up a fish may cause pain to the fish. So, do we still want to pursue this sport???

I am one to declare I did allot of C&R till my late mother was verbally insulted by a stranger who saw me releasing all my fish, big and small.

Trash and rubbish, I agreed that many fisho still don’t bother to collect them for proper disposal. Learned thru participating several of Kagum’s river cleaning events, I once round up all the fisho who invited me to one of their regular haruan sites (featured in Rod & Line Nov. issue), in return they were asked to clean up all the rubbish strewed around. I wonder whether they will still invite me for their future trips in their other sites.

Bro Marlin appreciate yr good reminder to all, for the conservative fishing and doing everyone’s part to keep the environment clean. For those who read Rod & Line earlier issues, many might still remember a Japanese by the name of Mr Watanabe, who was featured in the magazine
for his practice of collecting all the rubbish around the fishing site before starting and after fishing.
A story told by a friend of mine Hanyt, that one of his Sabah friend a JKR Director who went fishing in Endau Rompin and due to an unforeseen incident their boat capsized, this friend of his lost all his belongings, but clinching tight to a special bag. He really reserve a respect from everyone, the contents in the bag was nothing but rubbish he collected during the trip, which he intended to bring back for proper disposal.

Maguro,

Let you in a secret, you remembered that there was a Letter to the Editor on “Let’s Watanabe” to Malaysian anglers to clean up their act?..well, it was written by yours truly  incidentally that’s my wife’s surname also.

I like to think that members of MFN are amongst the more enlightened anglers in Malaysia. My message is a reminder to help set a better example for those we fish with. We are not the majority or the mainstream anglers in Malaysia and unfortunately, there is a section of the angling community that clearly reads Rod and Line magazine (for instance), goes to the places illustrated there and yet still leaves their trash behind without guilt or remorse.

People that insult you for releasing fish, or use arguments that fish feel pain to suggest that fishing is bad are expressing an opinion, however misguided or unsupported by science, that needs to be respected. Above all, we anglers should all be seen to be doing the right thing when we fish. Leaving trash everywhere reinforces the view that anglers are a bad bunch and need to be banned.

Each and every person is special. The fish from market and fresh water are food and provide protein for our human consumption. So, life must go on..... Where is our next target place for haruans?????
Bro slimfish ,during the school holiday, I intend to bring my children to the kelong in P Sibu, hope they will learnt a few tips on fishing.

Wrt FISHING for kids, I already initiated that more than 30 years ago,
My eldest son is a keen angler, sea and land and is helping me in my shop, my second one is a fishing nut and doing sales for XZOGA products. When they were kids, I brought them fishing for tilapia, haruan, etc.. at that time there were no pay ponds, all the ponds were ex mining pools and fishing was fantastic. Like the saying goes, “give a fish to him, he eats for a meal, teach him how to fish, he eats for his life”.

Bro Kenchen, would be delighted to tag along with my son. It would be a great time. I hope…

Hi Vincent Landlord,
I didn’t realize it was from you, but that was the letter that lead me to know of this Mr Watanabe’s good deed and a role model to be followed by those who concerns about our environment. At least you realize now, your letter do have followers which I am one of them to remember it till now what you intended to put forward to all Rod N Line readers. My respect and cheers to you Vincent.

Hi Bro Slim,
Look like all our sifu here taught their children how to fish, starting with tilapia fishing. Do you want me to organize a trip for that with your son? Of course don’t forget to teach him on keeping the environment clean as well.

Dear Maguro, would appreciate it if you can organize one. Thanks in advance.

Bro slimfish , how’s your A/L, no fishy activities ?

Have been visiting the Kota Damansara pond. Look at my posting in Maguro’s site. The experience was unbelievable…

Marlin Jnr keeps a log book and prints out these pictures to go in his log. He was a bit disappointed not to catch a Jaguar Cichlid this time around. He’s into trying to catch different species at the moment, although like all kids, it’s important they catch something, anything, when they fish.

My children happily posing with my catch.

Cool!

These children are also learning the correct way to handle fish. I still see too many pictures of anglers handling fish intended for release in a very fish unfriendly manner. The place you are fishing also looks refreshingly free from litter.

Great picture!
