i doubt it’ll be a knockout so soon la. report if u land a 5-6kg one with your black rose k. then maybe i should get myself one to try also.
ok…but knowing my fishing skills, it’ll be a long long while before I manage to hook up 4-5kg of anything [:D]. But when it happens I will report so that Lemax makes more revenue.

Mike, guys,
Is this applicable for mono only or includes braid as well, please?
This is advice from the experts - not from me. I am just repeating what was told to me, which I found very useful.
-
A 6 - 12 lb rated rod does not mean that you load it with 12 lb line. The correct line rating is near the middle - so in this case, 8 lb. ( OK - I cheat a bit - I use 10 lb )
-
Always set your drag to 1/3 of the rating of your line. Yes, I measured for the first few times, but you quickly start to learn just by pulling against the drag. So in the case of my 10 lb line - I use about 3 1/3 lb drag.
Like I posted earlier, in an emergency, I touch the spool with my finger. I also do the same if the fish takes far away from me, and I am not able to straighten my line before I strike. ( non circle hooks )
-
Yes, it is applicable to any type of line - it sets the amount of punishment you are going to mete out on the rod. Some people say that mono has stretch, and they may go for a higher drag setting - but I don’t.
-
So what if I wanted to use 20 lb line ( maybe because of the snags, etc ). Just make sure that I still set the drag at 3 1/3 lb. The load on the rod is the same - the rod does not know what line I am using.
Hope that the above helps [:)]

yes, the rod does feel kinda fragile. I wonder why it was so expensive, costs more than 100 bucks. Maybe its ideal only for fishes 1kg & below, not suitable for heavy fighters. shouldn't have bought it [:(]
you should try Xpuyu… i have 1 6 feet… it can bend very Well.. even landed few big fish with that..

allow me to add some info regarding rods based on what i know.
“a good rod” is a very vague but widely used term by anglers.
good in what sense? castability? lifting power? balance? solid construction? will not break under extreme loads? nice design? good components? brand? price? the list goes on & on!
to find the rod that suits ur needs best, many factors have to be taken into account, type of fishing, budget etc
buy a rod that befits the type of fishing that you do. some rods may have more attributes than others, you have to give and take certain points and weigh out the criteria. you will not regret this.
as a guideline, here are some things to note before buying a rod.
if you cast lures a lot, a light & well-balanced rod for repeated casts would be ideal.
if you do bottom fishing, a solid rod with butt strength & flexible tip to detect bite, strike & muscle it up would be great.
if you cast from a boat, 5’6" to 6’ rod would be nice to maneuver around
if you cast from the shore, a longer rod (7’ and above) would make better sense
if you fish crankbaits, a slower action rod would be important to allow the bite to sink in.
if you jig, a light rod with good flex and lifting power would be a joy to use.
…so on and so forth…
most importantly, the rod must inspire confidence in the type of fishing that you do. you decide. your fish. if the rod works out for you, then it is a good rod. doesn’t matter if it is a rm50 rod, or a rm5k rod. a rod that works for you, and gets the job done to your specifications, is undoubtedly a good rod! [:D]

Good note FT bro,
U might wanna place it as guidelines in another thread…
Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

Hooking up a big fish is mostly based on luck…landing a big one, that will take skill (and luck..)
If you read about my Melaka trip over at the paypond section, Jack the novice angler got his first biggie after waiting for 3 hours.
Well, while we’re at it allow me to review the best rod I have ever owned. Its an Abu Conolon, 5’6" long (the rod[:D]), I think its about up to 15lb class, I pair it up with a Ryobi Zauber 1000 series with 15Ib line. Since I bought it 4 mths ago, I have caught more than 30 fishes with it, largest was a 6kg Patin. Fights the fishes beautifully, I felt in full control of the Patin at all times. Love that rod. Its currently “resting” while I give the Black Rose a work out (give the Lemax a chance to “get some”).
Like Chris - can also endorse the ABU Conolon. Mine is a 6’ 2 " 8lb to 14lb one piece rod. I think I paid Rm200+ for it about two years ago.
Good value for money, and while a bit heavier than the IM7 / IM8 ( more expensive ) rods, it suites my sojourns into Semenyih and the like where it gets banged about a bit.
Let us hear about your " Black Rose " when you have had more time with it. Good fishing [:)]
Truefully saying…SORRY!!!..I have yet to break a rod to date due to fishing. I have broken lots and lots of rods due to mishandling cos inexperiences or accidents but if a person were to understand the capabilities of the rod and maximise its capacity [my humbly limited experience la], thus far I have not broken any rods yet. This applies to both el cheapo and expensive branded rods or even custom made stuffs. If my statement here offend anyone. pls allow me apologise in advance.[:I]</font id=“purple”>

Wkl2020,
Usually rod breaks due to mishandling, or is it always break due to tat…
Even if used correctly still break, example like wind knot tie around rod tip, have nicks and cut on rod blank, etc, usually still human error tat cause them… the rest like loading heavier than stated poundage, full locking the reel, casting heavier than stated bait etc no question bout it. Mishandling…
Even if the rod manufacturer state the wrong line poundage or wrong rod spec, still mishandled due to human error lol
Some telescopic rod tat i find really questionable quality(guides possition, blank material, joints material) still could perform, to it’s stated limit only la tat one i break before, also not due to fish but snag hahahaha…
Bout this i agree too bro…
Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you
I’ve never actually seen or personally known of anyone’s rod breaking while fighting a fish, but i have seen a few rods break while the fella tried to lift the fish onto the ground using the rod alone. Thats quite a wasteful way of breaking a rod, I have seen how the rod bends like hell but the fella still want to lift the fish out with the rod…then “phak”. Don’t understand.
I own a light action lemax, it has served me well for 6 years, apart from 1 of the ring fallen off due to handling, I would like to say that it’s very reliable and I’m contemplating buying another one.
I feel that understanding the capabilities of the rods we owned are very important to maximise the feel/fun/joy/ out of them. For example, I have seen many anglers striking so hard that smaller fishes actually jump out of the water due to this action.
Imagine when an angler using a ultralite rod but handle it like a sea/boat rod, loading it way over it’s line poundage limits, striking bites like there are no tomorrow, locking up the drag on the reels, etc…now how can the rod not break?
Scenario 2, keeping fishing gears in the car under hot sun over long period of time will lower it’s lifespan. Rods can become brittle due to these factors too. Yet we complain the rod is hopeless.
Scenario 3, not cleaning/maintaining rods. After fishing in salty enviroments, we are supposed to clean the rod/guides with fresh water b4 keeping it away. Many anglers I know are never tired during fishing but suddenly got so extremely weak that flushing their gears is an impossible task and can wait till 2molo which more often that not convinently be forgotten.</font id=“purple”>

wkl2020,
Keh keh keh…i know what you mean. When i am fishing i never feel tired, always wanting to sit there the whole day & night to wait for that Pacu or Patin to strike, eyes wide open staring at the rod or float. But the moment I am ready to go home, wah, malas man. Just dump everything in the boot & drag myself home. The only thing I take out of the car when I get home is the leftover bait which I chuck into the fridge. I should clean my equipment as you said.
UPDATE on the Black Rose. Finally managed to battle a 3.5kg Patin on it last weekend, was using 20Lb braided line. I believe the Black Rose has proven itself to me, the rod held up quie well. I guess my earlier critizism of the rod was due it being the 1st time using such a thin & light rod. Now I see the value in it. The rod needs to be paired up with a really light reel e.g. 1000 series, this makes the rod feel very very balanced. The Black Rose is now my front line rod, together with the Conolon.
Good on ya, Chris!
Any pix? [:)]
Mind sharing about your rig, set-up, venue, bait, etc?
Hi,
Basically the usual set up for Patin - used a 25Lb mono leader with a double Y hook setup, no weight, just attach the leader to the main line with a swivel, use normal hong as bait & chuck the thing as far out as possible & fished at the bottom. Venue was Laguna. When the Patin took it, it was quite violent, rod bent almost double & my 1000 series shimano was screaming away. Almost had a heart attack as I very rarely get such fishes [:D]. I was fortunate thats all, but basically I am happy with the way the Lemax held up.
