Hey starfish,

Sorry didn’t call you cause i got a last minute call from my fishing mentor, He called me and ask me to meet him there. So i got the call about 7++pm so i figure that its too late to call you. Pond 1 was close on monday. I tried pond 3. Huge pond and thank god it got 4 fishes. People looked at me with all the envy faces. i’ll try to download the photo and paste it here.

Alright starfish,

Here is the photo’s as per requested.

Bravo Iceman, wow, more than enuf to feed the entire family for a few days leh. Aiyo, now my hands itchy aledy. Sigh! Wonder if i can find time to ease that urge while in jb though?!

Anyway, thanks for uploading the pics. Will call you when i’ve finish my mining and migration job. Meanwhile happy fishing & cheerio:)

ice, way to go! Try those Grouper hot spot some day.

starfish, many angler fish under the link to S’pore. Just go to any tackle shop and they are able to tell you where. Kembung will do if you can’t source live bait.

Hi kerapu, thanks for the info. Will try to check out the tackle shops in JB when I have the time. As for fishing, hmm… I don’t think I’ll be taking my rods with me as I will be travelling light. Furthermore, I be flying there so getting around JB will be a problem. I guess it’ll be a bit awkward to climb into a cab armed with rods and tackles too. Fishing with hand line is possible but it’s just not me, it’s not the fish that I want but the thrill that I’m after, with a rod and line.

Anyway, thanks again for the info. Maybe if time permits, I might just drop by those links that you mentioned just to watch the excitement then.

Bro Cd Magnum,

Welcome to the forum.

well i was using bottom style and bait is only prawn. Never use floats as there were lots of floats floating near my line.

Kerapu bro,

Hey i’ve seen people just let their line down right after the check-in counter. They Just sit and wait. By the way do you have any idea what is the dept of the pond at the enterance there?? Maybe planning to go there soon again.

Refer to my previous posting, that’s the row after the entrance. The depth is about 6m (2ft) if you look down straight, it was a slope extended deep under the construction.

Was at Pond 3 on Sunday night (Monday morning la)
One of the guys got 1 Naga (22.5kg). I think his name should still be on the board.
1st time i saw such a huge fish !!!
Surprisingly, he got the fish very near to where he was standing(about only 3m out) near the wooden bridge to the cages)>
That was what i heard when i was 'kaypoh’ing near the counter.

Hey Barra,

Did you see what was his setup like? Cause if i’m using my normal lemax i don’t think i can bring the grouper in. Have to source for stiffer rod or maybe might use my sea rod instead. The last time i went there was monday and the records was 24.2kg and they erased the name on monday night.

Bro kerapu,

When you got those groupers what kinda of settings are you using. thought of going there this thursday. Line poundage and rod poundage any advice? Don’t wanna loose a fish if my poundage is too light.

Refer to my previous posting, the 22.5KG Grouper is landed on the right hand site platoon area. Barra is refering to the water under the bridge. A very famous hot spot..but expect no other fish if want to try there.

Ice, 80LBS braid/40LBS rod, size 4 Owner - Cutting Point hook and Suffix 100LBS as lead. Eye open? What to do, you can’t wait for a 22KG Grouper dive further down to the wood, right? Perfect setup with split second reaction is the key.

Good luck!

so there is the big grouper in sea lion?

interesting. I had never thought they can make it up in Malaysia.
in Taiwan we have pond exclusive for big grouper, there is a pond in my town Taichung, they put grouper only weight more than 60 kg.
for the tackle we use no. 150 (about 80lb) rod, whiplash no. 15 (I think it is 200 lb, correct me if I am wrong), Varivas No. 80 (about 250 lb) leader, 3 inch long VMC hook (barbless by the way). complete kampung, live crab, live bream (500 g)and I’ve saw a guy use a lobster about 500 g before.

whole kampung should do the trick but you need to be very patient because I think in sealion that is the only one that big.

Taiwan fishing style !!

by the way the reel is Shimano Stella 20000

Bro Kerapu,

Definately an eye opener. Well not only eyes open, my jaws also fall to the ground. Actually i wanted to bring my sea setup together with my Ryobi 8000 series but then i think its too much la. so didn’t do anything and also didn’t bring in the rod and reel. Just use the normal braided and also rod for siakap, merah and ang chor.
Might consider using my sea setup if the front line (after the check in counter) not so pack. Might just get a live bait and drop in my line to check it out.

Heard of any good news in pond 1? Well heard that the changed the water and have new stocks in the pond. Wonder whether it is true.. anyone been there lately??

“The best feeling is when the fish is nibbling till you see the rod curves but not while waiting for it to nibble”

Went Fishing on Monday at Jeram,

Saw about 5 ang chor and about 8 siakaps came out from the 3 hour session when i was at the pond. I caught 1 siakap weighing 1.5kg and lost the other one right infront of me. The siakap didn’t swollow at all just a lip hook. While fighting it to the bank. It gave a vigourous head-shake and it got itself off the hook. Darn!!

I think its about 1.5kg as well.
Just use pure kembong fillet. Prawn didn’t have much effect.

Icecube,
Noticed his setup, nothing special. He was using the floating rig
I thing he was equally surprised as well.

From my observation,he was only using a 20lb rod( 25 lb max)
Reel - 4000 or 6000 series.
A typical setup u see in the pond

The funny thing was he leader. It was only about 40 to 50 lb.

I believe it is purely luck and some skills (80/20).
Lucky to get the stike in the first place, and even luckier to land the fish.

I think pp using a heavy setup will not have 100 % landing rate either. Maybe 50 or 60 % depending on the luck and how the fish ‘sprint’ during the first few seconds after the strike.

I am using a Berkley Cherrywood 17lb rod and a 1500 reel.
Even for a 4kg Karapu hookup, I find it rather underpowered to fight the fish .

Can’t imagine what will happen if was my bait taken by the Giant!!!

Bro Barra,

Well sorry for the late reply. Was damn busy at work. That lucky guy taht got the grouper. He’s damn lucky and i think on that night his luck level was like 95% and 5% skill. Cause one thing i know that if you have lots of skill doesn’t mean that you’ll definately get a grouper. So i think more luck than skill and the skill will automatically take over to control the fish.

As for his setup. Its just normal setup. But a bit heavy for pond fishing la. I’m just using 7-14lbs rod and tica 3500 series reel.

As for your reel i think you had a great fun. But one curious question. I heard from some anglers the older kinda of anglers that if you use a small reel is definately more fun but then won’t it spoil the reel? Cause the reel can only take so much.

Anyway i’m going to sealion pond 1 tonight to try my luck again.
