Snakehead nearby Kota Kinabalu

Hi all,

I’m going to visit the wonderful city of Kota Kinabalu, this fall.
Since i’m very keen on fishing everywhere i travel, i want to explore the opportunities of fishing on Borneo. I’m especially curious of Snakehead, which I’ve heard a lot of.

Does anyone know anything about snakehead in the area of Sabah. Guiding companies and so on. Any info will be useful.

Thanks in Advance
//Daniel

Daniel, you need the help of the Otek Hunters! You have posted in the right place and I’m sure one of them will jump on and give you some hints and tips. You should be able to succeed in your quest with both Haruan (Channa striata) and Toman (Channa micropeltes) at least.

Marlin, I hope so.
A famous Swedish fisherman, once produced a film featuring the Snakehead. Those fish were absolutely brutal and i just have to try to catch one!

I’m looking forward to hear from all the competent anglers in here and also to once again visit your beautiful country!

Hi daniel

welcome!

fishing snakeheads in sarawak, i might help u find any, but in sabah i’m not sure, i dont think there is Toman/channa micropeltes in sabah..unless there is place being introduced same some places in kch area.

Na cheers,

Thanks for your answer. Do you have any places in the Kuching area, where there might be Snakehead?

Daniel, I’m actually a Brit, but you are right, it is a beautiful country. I think you’ll get the help you need here over the next few days. Hope you get your snakehead. Probably not like the movie, but a great sport fish none the less.

there are 6 sp of snakeheads can be found in swk:c.gachua,c.bankanensis,c.melasoma,c.baramensis,c.striata,c.lucius and c.micropeltes(introduced), but to catch melasoma, baramensis and bankanensis need to track inside jungle and little hard to find habitat(shady and shallow blackwater swamp) c.micro also hard to catch in sarawak river(big river)…most people here using live catfish as bait.

but to catch striata, lucius, it can be done…nearest place to kch is Matang area (peat swamp forest)c.gachua(dwarf snakheads) need to find freshwater streams.

There you go Daniel, you can catch Haruan in KK, just one of the many species of snakehead available in SE Asia. Unfortunately no Toman, which is the largest and possibly fiercest or the snakehead species, but Haruan are also highly predatory and very aggressive. Give Luther (Tembaring) a PM via the forum (just click on his name on the left box) to get his private e-mail address and phone number and you’ll get all the help you need. You could not be in better hands.

As far as the gear you’ll need for these fish, I think you can read up what everyone is using to catch Haruan right here on MFN. If you’re not sure, just post back here and we’ll all help.

Daniel
Welcome to MFN. You sure come to the right place. Please let us know the exact date for your arrival, we’ll be happy to be your host in KK.
Like Tembaring Bro mention, we usually do casting at our back yard and those haruan are big and healthy.

Sild Bro
Please give us a buzz or PM. Will show you around for haruan casting. Tuaran is good place for haruan hunting

Cheers

hello all,
i’m from kota belud, and still in the early stage of casting haruan or casting around salt and fresh water. there is a pond near k.b town here, not far from my home, anyone mind coming and casting here? or Mr. Daniel would pelase come and maybe share some technics or other fishing tips for us in borneo. otek hunters around k.k? badus hunter around tuaran? i’m at k.b but working now at kota marudu & pitas. weekend in k.b.

LIMFM

either than ‘kota marine’ fishing shop at asia city, where else i could get some lure & other fishing equipment? mind helping? in the pond i mentioned just now, it has some large snakehead, i’ve seen it several times, the snakehead go up surface to take breath and swam down again. my wife catch 1 snakehead there and it’s around 1 kg.

Yup snakehead fishing rite in the city [:)]. There are healty and fat haruans in the city. Our average catch is around 500grm - 1kg haruans, if you are lucky haruan touching the 2kg mark is a possibility. Badushunter has a great record of big haruans catches in the city, i think he has caught about 5 haruans that are touching the 2kg mark. Great! the date you mention, i think i will in KK too, will be glad to bring you around bro.. [:D]

Daniel, if you’re coming to kota belud, i wish to show you some spot that we can spot for the snakehead.

I am actually base in KK, Tuaran is one of our favourite hunting ground for snakehead and sometimes drive up even to KB. Sometimes if we don’t catch anything we will sure singgah the pay pond at KB to cast some table size grouper and siakap..he he[:)]
I think I know where is this pond located, very near to KB town. You mention you saw very large snakehead…It could be from a different species of snakehead but I can’t confirm yet as I never landed one from that pond…but is very high in my list. Will give you a call if we happen to be in KB.
Other than Kota Marine..you can go to Geo Fish located at Lintas Plaza. We normally get our supplies of lures from there, but there is one tackle shop in KB which carry varieties of lures and some even very rare and cannot get in KK. Even the berkley SP had wide selection!

Daniel Bro
Great. Will make sure I have free time to fish with you during your stay here. We can drive up to Kota Belud too only take about 45 minutes.

cheers

badus hunter,

yup, i’ve seen it many times the large 1 snakehead getting up surface to get air, but still dont bita on my lures… i also saw some red & black tilapia there. last sunday my uncle ask if he could let in some lampam jawa, the fish is from the jab. perikanan k.b boss, he ask my uncle to release it there, i think its a good idea too, because we can keep these fish around and the source will never be out… which paypond do you all went to in k.b? the pond i mentioned is in front of the BP station. and you all can try casting at sungai kawang-kawang located just after SMK TAUN GUSI. i never try out there, but it seems also a good spot for casting too. the shop in k.b town provided much varieties of fishing equipment. many from pitas and kota marudu also get their supply there. still, i lack some tools for casting now, like rods, line, reels and other lure.. i just use a simple set to cast right now… soon will be getting all those things.
thanks for the info.
